A method of finishing an organic pigment by dry-comminuting said pigment in the presence of a sulfonato-functional condensation product of an arylsulfonic acid and at least one aliphatic aldehyde having 1 to 6 C atoms as crystallization modifier, dispersing the resulting mixture of pigment and crystallization modifier in mineral acid, and swelling the pigment in the presence of the crystallization modifier in mineral acid.

Improved lakes based on basic dyes and heteropolyacids (PM, PTM, SM, PSTM and STM) are prepared by a process in which the lakes are heated to 50.degree.-100.degree. C. at pH 2-5 in the presence of (1) primary, secondary or tertiary aliphatic amines, (2) alkylamino-C.sub.2 -C.sub.8 -alkanoic acids, (3) diaryl- or triarylamines, (4) acidic or neutral phosphates based on fatty alcohols, their ethylene oxide or propylene oxide/ethylene oxide adducts, polypropylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, or propylene oxide/ethylene oxide block copolymers, (5) sulfuric acid half esters of fatty alcohols, of their ethylene oxide adducts or alkylphenol/ethylene oxide adducts, (6) C.sub.8 -C.sub.20 -alkanoic acids and alkenoic acids, alkylbenzenesulfonic acids, alkylnaphthalenesulfonic acids or dialkylsulfimides, (7) alkylphenol/ethylene oxide adducts, alkanol/ethylene oxide adducts or alkylamine/ethylene oxide adducts, (8) propylene glycols or propylene oxide/ethylene oxide block copolymers of alkanediols or -polyols or (9) naphthols or alkylphenols. The pigments obtained possess improved tinctorial properties and performance characteristics and are readily dispersible in printing inks. The prints exhibit high gloss and high transparency.

Triaminotriarylmethane colorants are obtainable by first reacting an aluminum or iron trihalide complex of a 4,4',4'-trihalotriphenylmethyl halide with a metanilic acid, a sulfanilic acid or a .beta.-naphthylaminesulfonic acid and then reacting the product with one or more anilines to replace the halogen atoms located in the 4-positions. The compounds according to the invention are very useful as pigments, for example in printing inks, or for toning carbon black.

Easily dispersible alkali blue pigments with high color strength are obtained if the pigment is precipitated in the presence of (1) primary, secondary or tertiary aliphatic amines, (2) N-alkylamino alkanic acid, (3) a diaryl or triarylamine, (4) an acid or neutral aliphatic ester of phosphoric acid, (5) a half ester of sulfuric acid based on fatty alcohol, fatty alcohol-EO adducts or alkyl phenol-EO adducts, (6) an alkane or alkene sulfonic acid on a dialkylsulfimide, (7) EO adducts based on alkylphenols, alkanols or alkylamines, (8) polypropylene glycol or PO/EO block copolymers based on alkane diols or alkane polyols or in the presence of mixtures of these compounds or is mixed with at least one of the substances listed under (1) to (8) after the precipitation with acid in the acid suspension and is isolated. Alkali blue pigments are obtained which are easily dispersible in offset printing ink varnishes and which result in excellent color strength of the printed matter.
