A battery for an implantable medical device (IMD) configured to support a relatively high rate of energy discharge relative to its capacity to support energy intensive therapy delivery, such as high energy anti-tachyarrhythmia shocks, by the IMD. The battery includes a first electrode, a second electrode separated a distance from the first electrode, an electrolyte disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode. The electrolyte includes a lithium salt including LiAsF6, an organic solvent, and an electrolyte additive that includes vinylene carbonate.

Electrolyte additive in primary batteries for medical devices

Various embodiments of an electrical component and a method of forming such component are disclosed. The electrical component includes a substrate having a first major surface, a second major surface, and cavity disposed in the substrate. The cavity extends between the first major surface and a recessed surface. Tantalum material is disposed within the cavity. Further, the tantalum material includes tantalum particles. The electrical component also includes a dielectric layer disposed on the tantalum particles and an electrolyte cathode layer disposed on the dielectric layer. The electrical component further includes a cathode electrode disposed on the electrolyte cathode layer and over the cavity.

Electrical component and method of forming same

Various embodiments of an electrical component and a method of forming such component are disclosed. The electrical component includes a substrate having a first major surface, a second major surface, and a cavity disposed in the substrate. The cavity extends between the first major surface and the second major surface. The electrical component also includes an anode electrode that includes a conductive foil layer disposed on the second major surface of the substrate and over the cavity. Tantalum material is disposed within the cavity and includes tantalum particles. A dielectric layer is disposed on the tantalum particles, and an electrolyte cathode layer is disposed on the dielectric layer. The electrical component also includes a cathode electrode disposed over the cavity.

Various embodiments of an electrical component and a method of forming such component are disclosed. The electrical component includes a substrate having a first major surface, a second major surface, an alloy layer disposed on the first major surface of a substrate, and tantalum material disposed on the alloy layer such that the alloy layer is between the tantalum material and the first major surface of the substrate. The tantalum material includes bonded tantalum particles. The electrical component can also include a dielectric layer disposed on the tantalum particles, a cathode electrode disposed over the tantalum material, and an anode electrode disposed on the second major surface of the substrate.

Frame structures, assemblies and methods for use in implantable medical devices. The frames may include one or more first polymeric portions and one or more second polymeric portions coupled to the one or more first polymeric portions. The one or more first polymeric portions may have a higher durometer than the one or more second polymeric portions. The one or more second polymeric portions may provide an interference fit between the one or more second polymeric portions and the housing and/or between the one or more second polymeric portions and one or more components disposed in the housing.

Frames for implantable medical devices and methods

A capacitor for an implantable medical device is presented. The capacitor includes an anode, a cathode, a separator therebetween, and an electrolyte over the anode, cathode, and separator. The electrolyte includes ingredients comprising acetic acid, ammonium acetate, phosphoric acid, and tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether. The capacitor has an operating voltage ninety percent or greater of its formation voltage.

Capacitor electrolyte

The invention is directed to designs for capacitors of implantable medical devices (IMDs) such as implantable defibrillators, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, implantable pacemaker-cardioverter-defibrillators, and the like. The capacitor designs can reduce capacitor volume significantly and may also improve charge holding capacity relative to conventional capacitor designs. Moreover, since capacitors typically comprise a significant portion of the volume of an IMD, significant reductions in capacitor volume can likewise significantly reduce the size of the IMD.

A capacitor for an implantable medical device is presented. The capacitor includes an anode, a cathode, a separator therebetween, and an electrolyte over the anode, cathode, and separator. A high voltage capacitor anode for an implantable medical device is fabricated by sintering, anodizing and heat treating a pressed tantalum powder slug. The sintering may be performed at a temperature between approximately 1500&#xb0; C. and approximately 1600&#xb0; C. for a time between approximately 3 minutes and approximately 35 minutes; subsequent anodization may be performed by immersing the slug in an electrolyte at a temperature between approximately 15&#xb0; C. and approximately 30&#xb0; C. and then applying a voltage across the slug, the voltage being between approximately 175 Volts and approximately 375 Volts; subsequent heat treating may be performed at a temperature between approximately 400&#xb0; C. and approximately 460&#xb0; C. for a time between approximately 50 minutes and approximately 65 minutes. Following heat treating, the anode is reformed by a second anodization.

Tantalum anodes for high voltage capacitors employed by implantable medical devices and fabrication thereof

The present invention provides improved cathodes and industrialized methods for producing such cathodes using an industrial dosing valve-based electrode coating fluid emitting technique. The family of cathodes according to the present invention can be produced so that they inhabit a pre-existing metallic surface such as an inner surface of a titanium casing adjacent but insulated from direct electrical communication from an anode. Foil-type valve metal anodes as well as porous valve metal anodes formed from metallic powders may be used in conjunction with the cathodes of the present invention.

Methods and apparatus for producing carbon cathodes
