A brake signal transmitter for an electronic braking system produces an electrical braking requirement signal as well as a mechanically produced pneumatic braking pressure. The electronic braking requirement signal is evaluated, together with other measured magnitudes which define the travel state, in an electronic vehicle control system, and a braking pressure is produced as a function of this evaluation by a braking pressure modulator. Following the principle of addition redundancy, the pressure produced mechanically by the brake signal transmitter is added to the pressure produced electrically by the brake modulator and the total pressure represents the braking pressure acting on the brake cylinders. In the event of failure of the electronic system, the mechanically produced pressure automatically becomes active as the braking pressure, and functions as the redundancy pressure. An addition device is provided within the brake signal transmitter itself, in which the pressure produced mechanically by the brake signal transmitter and the pressure produced electrically by the brake signal transmitter are added together. The electric braking pressure modulator may be part of the brake signal transmitter or, can be located outside the brake signal transmitter, and the pressure supplied thereby can be transmitted to the brake signal transmitter.

Brake signal transmitter with integrated addition redundancy

A valve arrangement includes a pressure medium inlet chamber, a pressure medium outlet chamber connected to a consumer, for example, a brake cylinder, and a pressure medium exhaust leading to a pressure medium sink. The pressure medium inlet chamber is connected to a pressure medium source. The pressure medium outlet chamber can be connected by operation of a controllable inlet valve to the pressure medium inlet chamber and by a controllable exhaust valve to a pressure medium sink. The actuating force requirement is small because the pressure force on the active surface of the graduating piston is absorbed by the regulating spring. As a result, the actuating force requirement of such arrangement is very low by comparison with the actuating force requirement of heretofore known arrangements. This feature permits facilitated selection of an actuating force requirement by placement of a spring which acts in opposition to an operating element of the arrangement. The invention finds particular significance in applications directed to vehicle braking systems.

Valve arrangement for operator actuated delivery of a pressure medium

An arrangement for use with a valve system permits facilitated adaptation to conditions where modified lever ratios are desired while an actuation force requirement remains unaffected, or where a modified actuating force requirement is desired while lever ratios remain unchanged. In order to avoid or reduce costs associated with modification of the actuation force requirement of the valve system, a spring is provided which acts upon an operating element thereof, in addition to a pressure force, and codirectional therewith, against the actuating force in such manner that a predetermined actuating force requirement results. The invention finds particular significance in applications directed to vehicle braking systems.

Valve arrangement

A process for braking a vehicle and braking system for carrying out that process are disclosed. As braking begins, a start-braking signal is produced. A signal indicating a vehicle deceleration requirement and a signal indicating the actual vehicle deceleration are also produced. At the time the start-braking signal is produced, a control unit sets an initial vehicle declaration signal equal to the signal indicating the actual vehicle deceleration. Thereafter, the control unit actuates at least one brake of the vehicle when the value of the signal indicating the actual vehicle deceleration is different from the sum of the signal indicating the vehicle deceleration requirement and the initial vehicle deceleration signal.

Process and apparatus for braking a vehicle

A brake system with at least one brake circuit comprises a mechanical brake-pressure control device and an electrical brake-pressure control device. The brake system is constructed without additional expenditure and by use of a mechanical brake-pressure control device and by an electrical control valve device. The system is constructed such that the brake-pressure modulator (8) of the electrical brake-pressure control device (6, 8, 11, 19) can also be controlled by pressure. The brake-pressure modulator (8) meters the brake pressure, both on the strength of the supplied electrical signal as well as according to the value level of the fed-in redundant brake pressure. The control electronics (11, 19) of the electrical brake-pressure control device (6, 8, 11, 19) is constructed such that it sets the strength of the electrical signal to a value required for covering and for meeting the respective brake-pressure demand request. The invention structure can be employed preferably in connection with road vehicles and motor vehicles.

Brake system with at least one brake circuit

A brake actuating device is furnished with a device for slack readjustment of a brake, in particular of a vehicle brake. Defects in the area of the slack readjustment device can result in an erroneous and defective brake behavior. The invention device furnishes a continuous control of the brake release gap and of the brake lining wear. The motion of the brake mechanism is used for the generation of a first measurement distance (s). The motion of the slack readjustment device (5, 7) is used for the generation of a second measurement distance (n). A regulating distance (q), formed by a superpositioning of the measurement distances (s) and (n), can be scanned and recorded with a distance sensor (17) of a signal generator (18). The signal, corresponding to the regulating distance (q), can be transformed into signals corresponding to the measurement distances (s) and (n) in an evaluation device. The evaluation device serves for a continuous surveillance and monitoring of the brake release gap and of the brake lining wear at a vehicle or in a diagnostic center, where the evaluation device can be connected to the vehicle.

Brake slack adjuster with electronic control and distance sensors

A method for the surveillance of a brake device includes an indirect measurement of temperature of a selected device component, for example a brake drum, of a brake device. A warning signal is furnished, if this measured temperature reaches a maximum permissible value. The invention method is quick by employing the pressure-dependent deformation characterizing curve (11) of the device component heated to the permissible temperature. The device component represented by the brake drum (1) can heat to the maximum permissible temperature and is placed under surveillance during a brake actuation based on deformation and pressure measurement. It is then determined if the actual values reach or exceed the deformation characterizing curve (11). The invention apparatus is used in connection with brake devices in vehicles.

Method for the surveillance of a brake device in regard to overload

An overload warning system for a trailer brake cylinder of a trailer brake system having a nominal deceleration rate. It has been found that previous temperature sensing overdue warning systems have a disadvantage that undue delay occurs and that no warning signal is initiated until after damage to the trailer brakes occurs. The present invention proposes that the tractor brake system and the trailer brake system compare their received operating control signals from which they form a ratio factor and then produce a warning signal when the ratio factor changes beyond a predetermined critical change velocity. The present invention employs the rapid drop in braking force caused by a brake overload and uses the rapid drop and increase brake demand for readjusting the brake deceleration. The present invention is used for uniquely recognizing the 'Fading' effect of the trailer brake system.

The present invention provides a method of and an apparatus for regulating an electrically regulated brake circuit of a multi-circuit brake mechanism with pressure medium activated brakes. To decrease the expense of such multi-circuit brake mechanism, the invention transforms the pressure, modulated by the brake actuating mechanism, to an electrical signal and regulates or co-regulates the electrically regulated brake circuit (II) by this electrical signal.

A method for the approximate determination of the average temperature of a device component of a brake device. The average temperature is determined by the deformation of the device component at the start of a brake actuation and at a point in time t.sub.1 following said start as well as by a temperature-dependent change of the elasticity module of the material of the device component. The present invention provides an apparatus for recording the axial force exerted by a coupling device. This apparatus measures the pressure which the axial force exerts on an elastomer-type spring-like element and for this purpose a pressure sensor is mounted at a predetermined transfer shoulder between the elastomer-type spring-like element and the housing or the pull rod of the coupling device. As an alternative, the pressure sensor can be mounted in the elastomer-type spring-like element.

The present invention provides a drive engagement control and speed governor system for a vehicle which is capable of adapting a prior art system, known as a DEC/G system, to different types of vehicles. To accomplish this, the invention provides a valve system having fluid pressure delivery as a function of the magnitude of the control signal fed by an electronic control system. According to this invention, the electronic control system transmits a control signal to the valve system which is only sufficient to eliminate the spinning of a drive wheel on such vehicle or to eliminate exceeding of a predetermined maximum speed by an operator of such vehicle.

The present invention teaches a control input device particularly suited to a number of applications on a motor vehicle. The device can be activated by the foot of an operator to transmit an electrical output signal which is a function of load or displacement. Such control input device includes a leaf spring mounted such that it can be bent in response to an application of a foot force. Attached to the leaf spring is a sensor which measures the bowing of the leaf spring and transmits a corresponding electrical output signal.
