A method for the folding of an airbag for motor vehicles which comprises the steps that an airbag to be folded is fixed in a housing with its closed end at an upper part of the housing and is fastened with its open end at a base element lying opposite to the upper part in such a manner that the base element seals off the interior of the airbag against the inner space of the housing; that the housing and the base element are moved relative to one another; and that the pressure within the airbag and/or the housing is varied during the relative movement. An apparatus for the folding of an airbag, in particular for carrying out the folding method in accordance with the invention.

Method and apparatus for the folding of an inflatable airbag

An air bag module includes an air bag and an inflator being activatable to discharge inflator gas for inflating the air bag. The inflator has at least one discharge port through which inflator gas is discharged. A housing has a wall adjacent the discharge port of the inflator and includes at least one vent opening. The module also includes a movable member alignable with the vent opening. The movable member is movable relative to the vent opening for opening and closing the vent opening at a predetermined time during inflator activation to control the amount of inflator gas discharged into the air bag and the amount of inflator gas expelled out through the vent opening of the housing. A device is activatable during activation of the inflator to move the movable member relative to the vent opening at the predetermined time during inflator. activation.

Air bag module with variable inflation

An air bag module includes an air bag and an inflator being activatable to discharge inflator gas for inflating the air bag.
