In one embodiment, a method for making a catalytic element comprises forming a first slurry of a promoter oxide precursor and a refractory inorganic oxide and calcining the first slurry to form a supported promoter. The supported promoter and a noble metal solution are combined to form a second slurry that is calcined to form a catalyst composition. The catalyst composition is applied to a substrate and the substrate is calcined to form the catalytic element. In one embodiment, the catalyzed particulate filter comprises a shell disposed around the catalytic element, wherein the shell has an inlet and an outlet, and a retention member disposed between at least a portion of the shell and the catalytic element.

An integrated multi-functional catalyst system includes a diesel particulate filter having an inlet side for receiving flow and an opposite outlet side, a substrate in the diesel particulate filter having an interior wall surface and an exterior wall surface, a first washcoat layer applied to the interior wall surface and adjacent the inlet side, and a second washcoat layer applied to the exterior wall surface and adjacent the outlet side, wherein flow distribution through the substrate is dispersed for minimizing back pressure. The diesel particulate filter may be one of a plurality of honeycomb cells.

Multiple washcoats on filter substrate

Disclosed herein is a method of distributing a washcoat along channels of a particulate filter substrate, the method including: forcing a washcoat slurry a predetermined distance into the channels, the predetermined distance being less than or equal to the full length of the channels; clearing an excess amount of washcoat slurry from the channels; and arranging a remainder of the washcoat slurry within the channels, the arranging including applying a first vacuum to a first end of the particulate filter substrate after the clearing. In one embodiment the clearing includes applying a second vacuum to a second end of the particulate filter substrate. In another embodiment, the clearing includes pulling the excess washcoat slurry from the channels. The predetermined distance may be less than or equal to the full length of the channels. The arranging may provide a layer of a washcoat composition comprising a catalytically active material arranged anisotropically along a length of the channels of the particulate filter substrate.

Method for control of washcoat distribution along channels of a particulate filter substrate

A catalyzed adsorber that is effective and durable in treating exhaust gas from internal combustion engines, and in particular, for adsorbing hydrocarbons contained in engine exhaust gas during cold start, releasing these hydrocarbons when the engine exhaust gas has heated the adsorber to normal operating temperature and catalyzing the conversion of these hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water. The catalyzed adsorber has a catalyst overlayer with a non-catalyst overcoat loading of about 1.0 g/in or less.
