An illumination device and methods are provided herein for avoiding over-current and over-power conditions in one or more power converters included within the illumination device. The illumination device may include at least a plurality of light emitting diode (LED) chains, a driver circuit, at least one power converter, and a control circuit. In some embodiments, the control circuit may be generally configured for determining a maximum safe current level and/or a maximum safe power level attributed to the power converter(s) at a present operating temperature, and for adjusting respective drive currents supplied to the plurality of LED chains by the driver circuit, so as not to exceed the maximum safe current level or the maximum safe power level at the present operating temperature. In some embodiments, a temperature sensor may be included within the illumination device for measuring the operating temperature presently associated with the power converter(s).

Illumination device and method for avoiding an over-power or over-current condition in a power converter

A lighting device, such as a controllable light-emitting diode (LED) light source, may execute a self-calibration procedure to compensate for changes in an optical system of the lighting device that may have occurred after an initial factory calibration procedure. The lighting device may include an emitter, a detector that generates a detector signal in response to detected light, a memory that stores a curve defining an optical compensation value with respect to a measured forward voltage of the detector, and a control circuit configured to receive a measured value of a luminous flux of the light emitted by the emitter that may be determined in response to the detector signal and based on the optical compensation value. The control circuit may adjust the curve defining the optical compensation value in response to a difference between the measured value and an expected value of the luminous flux.

Calibration procedure for a light-emitting diode light source

A lighting device, such as a light-emitting diode (LED) light source, may operate in an interim operable state to avoid and/or prevent undesirable characteristics in the light emitted by the lighting device (e.g., strobing and/or flickering of a brightness of the light and/or shifting or change of a color of the light). When operating in a normal state, the control circuit may determine if a measured value of a first operational characteristic (e.g., a forward voltage of an emitter of the lighting device) is outside of a range and operate in the interim operable state if the measured value of the first operational characteristic is outside of the range. When operating in the interim operable state, the control circuit may adjust a drive current for the emitter in response to a measured value of a second operational characteristic (e.g., a forward voltage of a detector of the lighting device).

A lighting device may include an elongated housing that defines a cavity. The lighting device may include plurality of emitter printed circuit boards configured to be received within the cavity. Each of the plurality of emitter printed circuit boards may include a plurality of emitter modules mounted thereto. Each of the plurality of emitter printed circuit boards may include a control circuit configured to control the plurality of emitter modules mounted to the respective emitter printed circuit board based on receipt of one or more messages. The lighting device may include a total internal reflection lens for each of the plurality of emitter printed circuit boards. The total internal reflection lens may be configured to diffuse light emitted by the emitter modules of the plurality of emitter printed circuit boards.

Method of controlling serially-connected lighting devices

The control circuit may be configured for determining a maximum lumens value that can be safely produced by all LED chains at a predetermined safe temperature to achieve the chromaticity setting without exceeding the maximum safe current level or the maximum safe power level of the power converter(s) at the predetermined safe temperature.

The power converter(s) may be coupled for powering the LED chains, and may each comprise a maximum safe current level or a maximum safe power level, which varies with temperature. The temperature sensor may be coupled for measuring a present temperature associated with the power converters. The control circuit may be configured for determining a target lumens value that can be safely produced by all LED chains at the present temperature to achieve the chromaticity setting without exceeding the maximum safe current level or the maximum safe power level associated with the power converters at the present temperature.
