Self-compensating, quasi-homeotropic liquid crystal devices overcome the contrast reducing effects of smaller pretilt angles. The devices exhibit extremely high contrast ratio but at the same time suppress fringe field-induced disclination lines in high pixel density and small pixel size quasi-homeotropic displays. The surface pretilt and cell twist angles are set at values that, in combination, contribute to establishing a cuspate singularity in the contrast ratio for normally incident light in response to a drive signal switching the liquid crystal device to the OFF director field state that provides nearly 0% optical efficiency. The OFF director field state corresponds to a subthreshold drive level that provides for the liquid crystal device self-compensation for in-plane optical retardation. Setting the cell gap ('d') to provide substantially 100% optical efficiency in response to a value of the drive signal switching the liquid crystal device to the ON director field state achieves optimal dynamic range for the liquid crystal device.

Self-compensating, quasi-homeotropic liquid crystal device with high contrast ratio

An optically addressed, photoconductive spatial light modulator (SLM) operates in a transmissive mode and is capable of modulating a wide spectrum of visible light. There is no pixel structure or native pixel resolution in the SLM. The SLM has no photodiodes and does not rectify. A light projection system () in which one or more SLMs () are placed includes a write (image definition) UV light path () and a read (illumination) visible light path () to form a color image projection display. The write UV light propagates from an image display pattern source () and either sequentially or continuously writes image patterns on the photoconductive SLMs. The read visible light propagates through the SLM and is modulated by an electro-optical material, the optical properties of which change in response to the image structure carried by the write light. The result is a high efficiency display system that delivers high resolution color images through a projection lens () onto a display screen.

Transmissive, optically addressed, photosensitive spatial light modulators and color display systems incorporating same

The present invention discloses a multilayer dielectric optical structure wherein one of the optical materials in the multilayer structure shows an optically isotropic state above and a birefringent state below a characteristic temperature Tc near the room temperature. The optical structure reflects a predetermined wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation above the Tc but allow the same to transmit through below the Tc. The predetermined wavelength can be the near infrared radiation from 700 nm to 2500 nm, and the optical structure rejects solar heat in warm summer days but admits the same to interior on a colder winter day.

An optical device includes a ferroelectric liquid crystal material. This optical device has a first and a second substrate. A first alignment treatment is applied to a surface of the first substrate, the first alignment treatment being intended to induce an orientation of at least a portion of the ferroelectric liquid crystal material along a first alignment direction with a first pretilt angle &#x3b1;with respect to a plane parallel to the first substrate. A second alignment treatment is applied to a surface of the second substrate, the second alignment treatment being intended to induce an orientation of at least another portion of the ferroelectric liquid crystal material along a second alignment direction with a second pretilt angle &#x3b1;with respect to a plane parallel to the second substrate. The optical device further includes an arrangement for securing the first substrate with respect to the second substrate in such a way that the surfaces of the first and second substrates onto which the first and second alignment treatments were applied, respectively, are spaced apart, generally parallel and facing each other. In addition, a projection of the first alignment direction onto the treated surface of the first substrate makes a non-zero angle &#x3a9; with respect to a projection of the second alignment direction onto the treated surface of the first substrate such that, the ferroelectric liquid crystal material being injected between the first and second substrates, the optical device is free of chevron structures without a need to otherwise apply an additional treatment to the optical device.

Chevron-free FLC device

An adjustably opaque window including an external pane, an internal pane, a light transmission control layer and a shock-absorbing layer is provided. The external pane and the internal pane provide a cavity between them, and the light transmission control layer and the shock-absorbing layer are positioned in the cavity. The shock-absorbing layer is a flexible sheet that supports and protects the light transmission control layer. The light transmission layer consists of liquid crystal cells. The transmission ratio of the cells can be controlled variably.

Bistable and analog FLC devices employing chiral nonracemic liquid crystal materials exhibiting de Vries smectic A phases. The invention provides certain liquid crystal material that can be employed in both bistable and analog device configurations. The invention also provides a method for identifying liquid crystal materials that will exhibit both bookshelf structure in SSFLC cells and provide V-shaped switching in an analog device configuration.
