A novel communication system and means for interconnecting communication trunk lines to multiple communication terminals is disclosed. The interconnection apparatus includes multi-circuit connectors coupled to the trunk lines and connector members coupled to information transmission cables routed from the various terminal stations within the communication network. Means are provided for interconnecting the multi-circuit connectors or trunk lines to the connector members so that any one of the communication channels may be associated with any one of the stations simply by mating one of a plurality of relocatable connectors to any of the various connector members. The components of the interconnection apparatus are characterized by a modular construction and adaptable to factory assembly to thereby provide versatility and reliability beyond that obtained with prior art systems.

Communication system and means for interconnection of same

A modularized electrical connector is disclosed and has position adjustable contact elements for engaging selective second contact elements of a complementary electrical connector. The electrical connector includes a housing defining an elongated cavity, with a top portion of the housing having an elongated cavity, with a top portion of the housing having an elongated end opening communicating with the cavity. A movable insert member is provided and includes an insert element constructed and arranged for disposition at any preselected one of a predetermined plurality of positions along the length of the housing cavity. Contact elements are supported by the insert member for mating engagement with selected contact elements of a complementary electrical connector according to the position of the insert member within the cavity. Complementary opposed engaging elements are provided on the insert member and the housing defining the predetermined positions, and including spring means to hold the insert member at any one of the preselected positions. The housing includes a bottom portion having an elongated end opening communicating with the cavity for receiving the complementary electrical connector. A second connector member is removably mounted on the housing spaced from the cavity and supports contact means for mating engagement with contact elements of a second complementary electrical connector. The contact means of the second connector member is electrically connected to the contact means of the insert member.

Electrical connector

A modular interface device permits selective interconnection between telephone company network trunk lines and subscriber telephone lines. The device includes a housing having a removable protective cover and a first connector component having a plurality of contact elements aligned in at least two rows. The network trunk line conductors are electrically engageable with the contact elements so that each row of contact elements is associated with one tip or ring conductor, for instance. A second connector component is also provided having a plurality of second contact elements aligned in at least two rows. The subscriber telephone line conductors are electrically engageable with the second contact elements in such a manner that each row of second contact elements is associated with one of the subscriber line conductors. An array of contact members is disposed within the housing with the contact members aligned in a plurality of rows, each row of contact members being electrically engaged with and corresponding to a single row of contact elements in one of the connector components. The rows of contact members are arranged such that patchcord connector means may selectively interconnect contact members from each row associated with the network trunk lines with contact members from the rows associated with the subscriber telephone lines. Finally, integral testing means are provided for engaging selected contact members to independently test the electrical circuit of each network trunk line conductor and each subscriber telephone line conductor.
