A method for efficiently removal of oxidised selenium from liquid, such as FGD wastewater. The method involves adding a non-iron-based reducing agent (e.g. sodium dithionite) and preferably Fe(II) ions to the liquid at a pH of above 7.5 or 8 and precipitating elemental selenium from the liquid.

The present disclosure relates to rheology-modifying agents and methods of modifying the rheology of slurries. A rheology-modifying agent may be added to a slurry. The rheology-modifying agent may include a polymer and the polymer may include at least three chemically different monomers. The slurry may include lime and/or magnesium hydroxide.

Rheology-modifying agents for slurries

Novel fluorophores and their use as fluorescent tags for polymers used in wastewater treatment. The fluorophores are quaternary amine salts that can be used to synthesize fluorescent tagged polymers that are stable at varying pH, have significant water solubility, and may be fluorescent at wavelengths greater than 550 nm. The fluorophores readily undergo polymerization with vinylic monomers to form fluorescent tagged polymers with excellent incorporation of fluorophore into the polymer framework. The fluorescent tagged polymers are useful to monitor and optionally dose industrial wastewater.

Biomass is quickly becoming an important feedstock for energy generation in power plants. Due to their composition and nature, certain biomass fuels contribute to slagging, fouling, and corrosion. This invention provides a novel method of reducing or suppressing slag deposition and/or cleaning deposited slag in energy production processes in which potassium-containing solid fuels are combusted. Besides acting as a slag suppressant, further advantages of this invention are that the additive has no detrimental side-effects on capital equipment, increases slag friability, decreases slag fouling rate, reduces heat transfer corrosion as well as increasing the lifetime of the selective catalytic reduction catalyst.

The invention provides methods and compositions for separating metals from a liquid medium, the method uses a copolymer derived from at least two monomers: acrylic-x and an alkylamine, wherein said polymer is modified to contain a functional group capable of scavenging one or more compositions containing one or more metals are disclosed. The treated liquid is then passed through a filtration system. The scavenging effect of the combination of the treatment with the filtration is unexpectedly greater than the sum of its parts.

Disclosed are methods for controlling, mercury emissions, and more particularly, to methods for controlling mercury re-emissions from a wet flue gas desulfurizer used in a combustion process. A method of controlling mercury re-emission from a combustion process includes measuring either mercury concentration, oxidation-reduction, potential (ORP), and/or sulfide concentration within a scrubber liquor of a wet flue gas desulpherizer (wFGD); correlating the mercury concentration, ORP, and /or sulfide concentration with an amount of mercury re-emission additive required in the scrubber liquor to reduce and/or prevent mercury re-emission to a selected level; and adjusting the rate of addition of mercury re-emission additive into the scrubber liquor to attain the selected level of mercury re-emission.

Methods of controlling mercury emission

The invention provides a method of efficiently removing selenium from water. The method involves: adding an oxidant to the liquid, adjusting the liquid's pH to below 7.5, adding ferric salt in an amount such that less than a quarter of selenium in the liquid precipitates and adding a poly dithiocarbamate material to the liquid in an amount such that the amount of poly dithiocarbamate material (in ppm) is greater than the amount of ferric salt (in ppm). This method removes far more selenium than previous methods, and does it using a smaller amount of expensive chemicals. Moreover this method makes it far more likely to achieve cost effective compliance with the ever-increasing environmental standards for selenium in water.

A method for the reduction of the emission of mercury into the environment from the burning of fossil fuels with the use of polydithiocarbamic compounds. The polydithiocarbamic compounds are used for the capture of mercury from the resulting flue gases using a flue gas desulfrization systems or scrubbers. The method uses polydithiocarbamic compounds in conjunction with a scrubber to capture mercury and reduce its emission and/or re-emission with stack gases. The method is a unique process of reducing the toxic levels of mercury, which allows for the use of coal as a clean and environmentally friendlier fuel source.

Complexation and removal of heavy metals from flue gas desulfurization systems

An activated sludge process for the clarification of wastewater comprising introducing the wastewater into a reactor where microorganisms consume organic material in the wastewater to form a mixed liquor comprising water, the microorganisms and an activated sludge; separating clarified water from the mixed liquor by filtration through a microfiltration or ultrafiltration membrane; separating the activated sludge from the mixed liquor; adding to the activated sludge at least one high molecular weight water soluble polymer to form a mixture of water and coagulated and flocculated solids; dewatering the coagulated and flocculated solids to form a mixture of dewatered solids and filtrate water; and recycling the filtrate water into the mixed liquor and a method of controlling polymer dosage, preferably using fluorescence emission spectroscopy.
