A solution for scalable key archival includes, at a network device, determining whether a key management device that is not part of a current key management device configuration has been newly added to a network. The method also includes, if the key management device has been newly added to the network, determining whether the network device has a first application program interface (API) or device driver for communicating with the key management device. The method also includes, if the network device does not have the first API, obtaining the API. The method also includes creating a binding between a virtual device driver of the network device and the key management device via the first API, the network device having a second API for communications between the virtual device driver and a security processor of the network device. The security processor communicates with the key management device using the second API.

Scalable key archival

System configuration is verified. Configuration information for a managed system is generated. The configuration information indicates existing software and hardware residing on the managed system. The configuration information is sent from the managed system to a management system. The management system compares the configuration information from the managed system with database information that indicates software and hardware supported by the management system in order to generate validity information that indicates any software or hardware on the managed system that is not supported by the management system. The validity information is sent from the management system to the managed system.

A technique for using a key repository to store data encryption keys provides a way to access key records in the key repository using a key identifier constructed from a media identifier associated with a data storage medium on which encrypted data is or will be stored. The media identifier is hashed and added to a counter value to produce the key identifier. In some embodiments, the technique is implemented in an encryption switch that provides data-at-rest encryption for a storage access network, but in other embodiments, the technique may be implemented in other devices, including data storage devices and hosts.

The present invention, in various embodiments, provides techniques for managing system power. In one embodiment, system compute loads and/or system resources invoked by services running on the system consume power. To better manage power consumption, the spare capacity of a system resource is periodically measured, and if this spare capacity is outside a predefined range, then the resource operation is adjusted, e.g., the CPU speed is increased or decreased, so that the spare capacity is within the range. Further, the spare capacity is kept as close to zero as practical, and this spare capacity is determined based on the statistical distribution of a number of utilization values of the resources, which is also taken periodically. The spare capacity is also calculated based on considerations of the probability that the system resources are saturated. In one embodiment, to maintain the services required by a Service Level Agreement (SLA), a correlation between an SLA parameter and a resource utilization is determined. In addition to other factors and the correlation of the parameters, the spare capacity of the resource utilization is adjusted based on the spare capacity of the SLA parameter. Various embodiments include optimizing system performance before calculating system spare capacity, saving power for system groups or clusters, saving power for special conditions such as brown-out, high temperature, etc.

Methods for using the Internet to create applications that perform many of the functions now performed by management platforms and third party add-on tools in a much simpler manner are described herein. The applications are easier to use by novices than known tools and lower the overall cost of system management. Using known system components, the system's configuration can be viewed or changed over the Internet using an HTML document to list and display the managed systems, together with icons that represent the state of the managed systems. By using &ldquo;active controls&rdquo; or Java scripts, the state of the managed systems can be dynamically updated by changing the color of associated icons or the displayed text. Using embedded commands or identifiers within template documents, a program can be created to automatically acquire needed system information. In another embodiment, an HTML CGI document containing desired system information and a reference link back to the system at the manufacturer's selected site is created, allowing the manufacturer's system to retrieve this system information automatically. The system information is then analyzed against a list of currently valid system configurations to detect potential problems. In turn, if potential problems are detected, the information is sent back to the managed system automatically.

A monitoring system within a computing system is set out. The monitoring system monitors components within the computing system. The monitoring system includes a plurality of monitoring devices, a dedicated bus and a controller. The dedicated bus is dedicated for use by the monitoring devices. Each monitoring device is connected to the dedicated bus. The controller is also connected to the dedicated bus. The controller assigns addresses to each monitoring device, stores exception events, and reports the exception events to system software for the computing system.

The present invention provides a method for unlocking software programs which have been locked to a particular disk by the method described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,327,563. This unlocking method determines if a software program has been moved to a new location since it was originally written to a magnetic disk. In addition this method determines if the program has been executed more than a preset number of times and deciphers the software program if deciphering is authorized.

The present invention provides a new and novel method for generating a identification number unique to a particular magnetic storage device. In a first preferred method, areas of a storage device which are defective are located. Then specific bad bits within the bad area are determined. The locations of the bad areas plus the location of the bad bits are used to create a identification number for the particular storage device. In a second preferred method, the surface of the magnetic storage device is read in the analog domain. The amplitude variations during the read process are used to generate a identification number for the storage device. Once a identification number is determined, it is used for preventing software piracy or other uses where a specific magnetic storage device needs to be identified.

The present invention provides a new and novel method for locking software programs to a particular disk. The method includes the steps of creating several files, one with a fixed name and at least one other file having a random name. Saving the head, cylinder and sector information for each of the files in the corresponding file along with use count information, saving the names of all the files in the first file with the fixed name, and encrypting all the files. This program locking method permits the distribution of trial copies of software programs and limits the risk that the program will be copied or used more than the permitted number of times.
