The present disclosure relates to a communication technique for convergence of a 5G communication system for supporting a higher data transmission rate beyond a 4G system with an IoT technology, and a system therefor. The present disclosure may be applied to an intelligent service (for example, smart home, smart building, smart city, smart car or connected car, health care, digital education, retail business, security and safety-related service, etc.) on the basis of a 5G communication technology and an IoT-related technology.

A method and an apparatus for controlling user equipment (UE) context between a plurality of nodes are provided. The method includes transmitting, to a second node, a first message to request a user equipment (UE) context update, receiving, from the second node, a second message indicative of a completion of the UE context update or a third message indicative of a failure of the UE context update in response to the transmission of the first message, and determining whether to retransmit the first message to the second node based on the reception of the second message or the third message.
