Adjustment of correction data for the respective LEDs at the end of manufacture of a print head is performed by transferring provisional correction data from a manufacturing device to an LED driver, directly, i.e., without once being stored in a storage circuit in the print head, and measuring the amounts of light from the LEDs and varying the correction data, and repeating such an operation until the correction data is optimized. The optimized correction data as well as the strobe time data determined from the measured average power are written in the storage circuit . During use of the printer, the data stored in the storage circuit is used for correction of the data and determination of the strobe time.

Print head having non-volatile memory and means for transmitting correction and inherent data

A non-impact printer has a print data correction circuit for providing a print data correction processing for video signals transmitted from a printing control unit to produce correction output data or patterns for printing on basic raster lines and other correction output data or patterns for printing on sub-raster lines. Those correction output data or patterns are supplied to the print head in the form of a real printing data signal.

A non-impact printer has a print data correction circuit for providing a print data correction processing for video signals transmitted from a printing control unit to produce correction output data or pattern for printing on the basic raster line and other correction output data or patterns for printing on the sub-raster lines. Those correction output data or patterns are supplied to the print head in the form of a real printing data signal.

A driving apparatus has driving circuits that supply driving energy to driven elements which form dots. The driving circuits are controlled by driving data indicating which driven elements are to be driven, and compensation data adjusting the amount of driving energy. The compensation data are stored in compensation memory circuits coupled to the driving circuits. A single data transfer means transfers the driving data to the driving circuits and the compensation data to the compensation memory circuits. If the driven elements are located on two or more different semiconductor chips, some of the compensation data preferably compensate for chip-to-chip differences, while other compensation data compensate for dot-to-dot differences within the same chip.

Driving apparatus with circuits for efficiently transferring and storing

An LED printer includes a printing control unit and an LED head. When a video signal received at the control unit has a higher resolution than the LED head, the control unit carries out the logical AND between successive bit data of the video signal to convert the video signal to a first signal. Corresponding to a line timing signal, this first signal is transferred as a head data signal to the LED head and is then printed on a basic raster scanning line. Further, the control unit also carries out the exclusive-OR between the successive bit data of the video signal so that the video signal is converted to a second signal and outputted to a line buffer. Corresponding to an additional line timing signal, the second signal is transferred as another head data signal to the LED head and is printed on an additional raster scanning line. The LED head drive energy for performing printing along the basic raster scanning line is set independently.

A method for printing an image including the step of generating a basic line timing signal and an additional line timing signal providing timings between respective timings of the basic line timing signal, producing a matrix by a video signal of a number of lines corresponding to a ratio of a resolution of the video signal to a resolution of a printing portion, producing one dot of a grayscale data signal having grayscale information of dots of the matrix, and driving a printing head by head drive energy determined according to the grayscale data signal, when an image is printed by using the printing head having a resolution in the raster direction less than the resolution of the video signal for forming the image to be printed. Although a number of dots for forming the image is reduced, amount of information is not reduced since dot information is converted into the grayscale information, so that high-quality printing is possible at a time of printing for grayscale.

Image printing method and non-impact printer wherein a received video

According to a method of adjusting a head gap, a wire dot head is set to a predetermined position of a reference head gap; a printing pattern for detecting printing time is printed by a plurality of pins; reference printing times of respective pins are detected. Next, a test printing is performed with test printing dots previously selected from printing data, and printing time of the test printing is detected. Then, the thickness of the printing media is calculated based on the reference printing time and the printing time of the test printing. At that time, a rule of thumb in which the difference of the printing time corresponds to the difference of the head gap, is used. Then, a shift amount of the wire dot head is calculated for setting the head gap to an optimum value according to the thickness of the printing media, and gap shifting mechanism shifts the wire dot head by the shift amount. This leads to highly accurate detection of the head gap and improves printing quality thereof.

In a dot print head of an impact type moved in a direction of spacing movement relative to a printing medium, and having a plurality of printing elements each having a printing wire arranged substantially in an elongated circle centered at a line parallel with the direction in which the printing elements are driven, and which is provided with a wire guide having guide elements for the respective printing wires for guiding tips of the printing wires to predetermined positions on said printing medium, the guide elements are divided into at least four rows each extending in the direction orthogonal to said direction of the spacing movement and orthogonal to the direction in which the printing wires extend, and distances between said rows are multiples of 1/240 inches. Each of the printing elements is driven for printing either at a reference timing which occurs once a standard printing cycle having a standard period, at a timing 1/4 of the standard period past said reference timing, at a timing half the standard period past said reference timing, or at a timing 3/4 of the standard period past said reference timing.
