A liquid crystal display includes a first substrate and a second substrate, a lower display electrode provided on the first substrate, an insulating layer provided on the lower display electrode, an upper display electrode provided on the insulating layer and having a mesh pattern including opening portions, a common electrode provided on the second substrate, and a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate in a state in which the upper display electrode and the common electrode face each other.

A liquid crystal display apparatus comprises an active matrix type homogeneously aligned liquid crystal display device; a drive device for sequentially display the images of the monochromatic colors; and an illumination device which selectively emits lights of the plural monochromatic colors to illuminate the liquid crystal display device. The drive device applies a reset voltage and a voltage corresponding to image data to be displayed between the opposing electrodes of the liquid crystal display device, then causes the liquid crystal display device to sequentially display images of the plural monochromatic colors. The illumination device sequentially emits lights of monochromatic colors each corresponding to an image of a single color displayed by the liquid crystal display device driven by the drive device and irradiates the light on the liquid crystal display device.

The second method includes a first step for working the metallic layer by the photo etching method, a second step for forming a wiring part on the insulating layer by the semi-additive method and a third step for working the insulating layer by the plasma etching method. The third method includes a first step for forming a wiring part on the metallic layer by the semi-additive method, a second step for working the metallic layer by the wet-etching method and a third step for working the insulating layer by the dry-etching method or the wet-etching method. The use of a two-layer laminate makes possible a low cost production. Further, the forming of a wiring part by the semi-additive method makes possible to working very accurately a fine wiring part.

In a liquid crystal display device using color filters, the area of each of color filters arranged on the inner surface of one of substrates in correspondence with the pixel areas is set to be smaller than that of each pixel area to form non-colored light exit areas, and color pixels are displayed with non-colored light which is not transmitted through the color filters and colored light which is transmitted through the color filters. Since high-luminance color pixels are displayed with these colored light and non-colored light, the screen can be made brighter. The liquid crystal display device further includes a reflecting member for reflecting external light incident from the front side of the device and transmitted through the liquid crystal layer toward the front side. In addition, in the liquid crystal display device, reflecting films for reflecting light incident from the front side of the device toward the front side are arranged on the inner surface of the front-side substrate in correspondence with the areas between the respective pixel areas, thereby making the portions between the respective pixel areas bright and further increasing the overall brightness of the screen.

One frame of a video signal is separated to a plurality of display frames. To display a color specified by the video signal by mixing display colors of a plurality of display frames, the video signal is converted to data indicative of a voltage to be applied to each pixel over the display frames by using a conversion table. A voltage corresponding to the converted data is applied to a birifringence control type liquid crystal display device to drive the liquid crystal display device multiple times in one frame period of the video signal. When the response speed of the liquid crystal is fast, a color obtained by mixing the display colors of a plurality of display frames is recognized by an observer. When the response speed of the liquid crystal is slow, a color corresponding to an average value of the voltages applied to a plurality of display frames is recognized by the observer. When the liquid crystal has an intermediate response speed, a color obtained by visually mixing a series of display colors displayed during the transition of the alignment state of the liquid crystal is recognized by the observer.

A pair of transparent substrates are arranged to oppose each other and bonded to each other through a seal member. A polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer and spacers are provided between the pair of transparent substrates. A plurality of pixel electrodes respectively provided with TFTs are disposed in a matrix form on the counter surface of one substrate opposing the other substrate, and the spacers for regulating the gap between the substrates are fixed, through resin films, to remaining regions of the counter surface of one substrate obtained by excluding pixel regions corresponding to the pixel electrodes from the region inside the seal member. A black mask is formed on the remaining regions of the counter surface of the other transparent substrate, and a flat counter electrode opposing the plurality of pixel electrodes is formed on the black mask. The polymer dispersed liquid crystal display device is obtained by injecting, into a cell in a vacuum state, a solution mixture of a photo-setting polymeric material and a liquid crystal material that are mixed in a formulating proportion not less than a solubility at a normal temperature and a normal pressure, increasing the temperature of the solution mixture to a temperature not less than the soluble limit temperature of the liquid crystal, and thereafter photo-setting the photo-setting polymeric material.

Polymer dispersed liquid crystal display device

A pair of substrates both having electrodes are arranged to oppose each other and bonded via a sealing member. A liquid crystal/polymer composite film is formed inside this structure, and color filters of red, green, and blue are formed on one of the two substrates. This liquid crystal/polymer composite film consists of liquid crystal domains and a polymer. The liquid crystal domains are so formed that regions corresponding to the color filters of different colors have an essentially equal optical effect on light components having the respective transmission wavelength bends of these color filters. The polymer is formed by polymerizing a photosetting polymeric material. To form the liquid crystal/polymer composite film having the optical effects for the individual color filters, a polymer dispersed liquid crystal display device with this arrangement is manufactured by radiating light for polymerizing the polymeric material onto a solution mixture of the liquid crystal and the polymeric material while adjusting the intensity of the light in each region corresponding to one of the color filters.

A polymer dispersed liquid crystal display device includes first and second substrates arranged to oppose each other, a polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer arranged between the first and second substrates, first electrodes arranged on the inner surface of the first substrate, a reflecting member arranged on the inner surface of the second substrate and designed to reflect light transmitted through the polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer, a coloring film for coloring light transmitted through the polymer dispersed liquid crystal to display a color image, and second electrodes arranged between the inner surface of the second substrate and the liquid crystal layer. At least a portion of each second electrode opposes a corresponding first electrode. A light coloring film is arranged on the reflecting member, contains a fluorescent material, and converts light transmitted through the polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer into light having the same color as that of fluorescent light emitted from the fluorescent material.

Reflective liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal device includes a TFT or active element substrate on which TFTs and pixel electrodes are arranged in the form of a matrix, a counter substrate having a counter electrode formed thereon and arranged to oppose the active element substrate, a polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer arranged between the active element substrate and the counter substrate and having a polymer resin and a liquid crystal which are dispersed, and a fluorescent film arranged on the pixel electrode. The device displays an image by controlling scattering, absorption, and transmission of light passing through the polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer. The phosphor film converts part of supplied light into fluorescent light having a predetermined wavelength and outputs colored light. Light used for a display is increased in intensity by the fluorescent light emitted from the phosphor film, thereby displaying a bright image.
