A solid electrolytic capacitor comprising a capacitor element, anode lead extending from a surface of the capacitor element, an anode termination that is in electrical connection with the anode lead, a cathode termination that is in electrical connection with the solid electrolyte, and a casing material that encapsulates the capacitor element and anode lead is provided. An interfacial coating is disposed on at least a portion of the anode termination and/or cathode termination and is in contact with the casing material. The coating contains a hydrophobic resinous material and the adhesion strength of the casing material is about 5 newtons per square millimeter or more as determined at a temperature of about 23° C. and relative humidity of about 30%.

Delamination-resistant solid electrolytic capacitor

A solid electrolytic capacitor comprising a capacitor element, anode lead extending from a surface of the capacitor element, an anode termination that is in electrical connection with the anode lead, a cathode termination that is in electrical connection with the solid electrolyte, and a casing material that encapsulates the capacitor element and anode lead is provided. A barrier coating is disposed on at least a portion of the capacitor element and is in contact with the casing material. The coating contains a polymeric material that includes a fluorinated component and a non-fluorinated component. The polymeric material has a glass transition temperature of from about 10&#xb0; C. to about 120&#xb0; C. and a thermal decomposition temperature of about 200&#xb0; C. to about 300&#xb0; C.

Solid electrolytic capacitor

A solid electrolytic capacitor comprising a capacitor element, anode lead extending from a surface of the capacitor element, an anode termination that is in electrical connection with the anode lead, a cathode termination that is in electrical connection with the solid electrolyte, and a casing material that encapsulates the capacitor element and anode lead is provided. A barrier coating is disposed on at least a portion of the anode termination and/or cathode termination and is in contact with the casing material. The coating contains a hydrophobic resinous material that includes an olefin polymer having a glass transition temperature of from about 20&#xb0; C. to about 160&#xb0; C.

A solid electrolytic capacitor is provided that contains a casing material that encapsulates the capacitor element. The casing material is formed from a curable resinous matrix that has a coefficient of thermal expansion of about 42 ppm/&#xb0; C. or less at a temperature above the glass transition temperature of the resinous matrix. Further, the capacitor exhibits an initial equivalence series resistance of about 200 mohms or less as determined at an operating frequency of 100 kHz and temperature of 23&#xb0; C., and the ratio of the equivalence series resistance of the capacitor after being exposed to a temperature of 125&#xb0; C. for 560 hours to the initial equivalence series resistance of the capacitor is about 2.0 or less.

Solid electrolytic capacitor with stable electrical properties at high temperatures

A module of capacitor assemblies is provided. To increase the capacitance and efficiency of the module, capacitor assemblies may be stacked. A variety of aspects of the module are controlled in the present invention, including the number of capacitor assemblies, the manner in which the capacitor assemblies are arranged and incorporated into the module, and the manner in which the capacitor assemblies are formed. For example, the anode terminations of each capacitor assembly are electrically connected and the cathode terminations of each capacitor assembly are electrically connected. The capacitance and efficiency of the module can be improved while maintaining the footprint of a single capacitor assembly.

A capacitor element for use in high voltage environments is provided. More particularly, the capacitor element contains an anode that includes a solid electrolyte that overlies an anode. The anode includes a sintered porous pellet and a dielectric layer having a reduced degree of crystallinity formed on a surface of the pellet and within its pores.

A capacitor assembly for use in ultrahigh voltage environments is provided. To help achieve good performance at such high voltages, a variety of aspects of the assembly are controlled in the present invention, including the number of capacitor elements, the manner in which the capacitor elements are arranged and incorporated into the assembly, and the manner in which the capacitor elements are formed. For example, the capacitor assembly contains an anode termination to which the anode lead of a first capacitor element is electrically connected and a cathode termination to which the cathode of a second capacitor element is electrically connected. To help improve the breakdown voltage properties of the assembly, the capacitor elements are electrically connected in series such that the anode lead of the second capacitor element is also electrically connected to the cathode of the first capacitor element via a conductive member.

Ultrahigh voltage capacitor assembly

A capacitor assembly configured to effectively dissipate heat when exposed to a high ripple current is provided. The assembly includes a plurality of capacitor elements, each including an anode body and lead, a dielectric layer overlying the anode body, and a solid electrolyte. Each capacitor element is defined by upper and lower major surfaces, first opposing minor surfaces, and second opposing minor surfaces. The major surfaces each have a surface area greater than that of each of the minor opposing surfaces. A hermetically sealed housing having a length, width, and height defines an interior cavity within which the plurality of capacitor elements are positioned. The ratio of the length to the height ranges from about 2 to about 80. Further, the lower major face of each capacitor element faces a lower wall of the housing, where the lower wall is defined by the housing's length and width.

Low profile multi-anode assembly

A capacitor assembly that comprises a housing, a capacitor element that is hermetically sealed within the housing, and a thermally conductive material that at least partially encapsulates the capacitor element is provided. The capacitor element includes a sintered anode body, a dielectric overlying the anode body, and a solid electrolyte overlying the dielectric. The thermally conductive material has a thermal conductivity of about 1 W/m-K or more as determined in accordance with ISO 22007-2:2014.

Thermally conductive encapsulant material for a capacitor assembly

A solid electrolytic capacitor that contains a capacitor element including an anode body, a dielectric layer, and solid electrolyte is provided. The capacitor element also includes an anode lead (e.g., wire, tape, etc.) that is electrically connected to the anode body. A first portion of the anode lead is embedded within the anode body, while a second portion of the anode lead extends from the anode body in a longitudinal direction. Contrary to conventional capacitors in which the exposed portion of the anode lead is supported by a complex and bulky lead frame assembly, there is no lead frame present in the capacitor of the present disclosure. Thus, the volumetric efficiency of the finished capacitor can be increased. An assembly containing a matrix of multiple solid electrolytic capacitor elements is also provided, as is a method for forming a matrix that comprises multiple solid electrolytic capacitor elements.

A capacitor containing a solid electrolytic capacitor element including a sintered porous anode body and a relatively large diameter anode lead wire is provided. The lead wire is electrically connected to the anode body for connection to an anode termination. Further, the lead wire has a diameter that is at least about 10% of the height of the porous anode body to improve the points of contact between the anode body and wire to reduce ESR. A portion of the lead wire extends from a surface of the anode body in a longitudinal direction. At least one notch can be formed in the portion of the lead wire that extends from the anode body. The notch can be formed via a laser or by cutting, punching, or sawing and can serve as the point of electrical connection between the anode termination and the lead wire.

A capacitor assembly configured to effectively dissipate heat when exposed to a high ripple current is provided. The assembly includes a plurality of capacitor elements, each including an anode body and lead, a dielectric layer overlying the anode body, and a solid electrolyte. A metal cylindrical housing having a lid and base, where the lid has a diameter in an &#x2212;x direction and the metal cylindrical housing has a height in a &#x2212;z direction, defines an interior cavity within which the plurality of capacitor elements are arranged about a central axis running along the &#x2212;z direction. The ratio of the diameter to the height of the base ranges from about 1.5 to about 20. Further, the metal cylindrical housing is hermetically sealed.

A solid electrolytic capacitor that contains a capacitor element that includes an anode body, dielectric layer, and solid electrolyte is provided. The capacitor also contains an anode lead that is electrically connected to the anode body by a refractory metal paste (e.g., tantalum paste). The use of such a refractory metal paste allows the anode lead to be sinter bonded to a surface of the anode body after it is pressed. In this manner, a strong and reliable connection may be achieved without substantially decreasing the surface area of the lead that is available for connection to a termination. Furthermore, because the lead is not embedded within the anode body, the capacitor may be configured so that little, if any, portion of the lead extends beyond the anode body. This may result in a highly volumetrically efficient capacitor with excellent electrical properties.

A solid electrolytic capacitor has a capacitor body formed from a pressed anode, a dielectric layer and a solid electrolyte layer. An anode lead extends from anode pellet and is electrically connected to an anode termination. The outer surface of the capacitor body forms a cathode that is electrically connected to a cathode termination. Base anode and cathode termination portions are coplanar and connected with a recessed leadframe channel. A capacitor element is attached to the anode and cathode termination portions and encapsulated. The recessed leadframe channel is removed to isolate the anode and cathode terminations on a single mounting surface, leaving a surface groove formed between the anode and cathode terminations.

A surface-mountable electrolytic capacitor with improved volumetric efficiency includes an electrolytic capacitor element, anode and cathode terminations, an encapsulation material and external terminations. The capacitor element has first and second opposing end surfaces and an anode wire extending from the first end surface that is electrically connected to a first anode termination portion. A first cathode termination portion is conductively adhered to a surface of the capacitor element, and a second portion is perpendicular to the first portion and parallel to the second end surface of the capacitor element. Encapsulating material surrounds the capacitor element to form a device package that is subsequently diced to improve volumetric efficiency and optionally expose the anode and cathode terminations on opposing end surfaces. First and second external terminations may be formed over the exposed portions of anode and cathode terminations to wrap around to one or more given surfaces of the device package.
