A method of fastening a rivet element to a workpiece, which has a preshaped hole provided for a reception of a rivet section of the rivet element and which is made planar at least in the region around the preshaped hole. Prior to the fastening process, the workpiece is positioned at a well-defined spacing from a contact surface of a die by at least one movably and/or elastically configured spacer of the die for a reshaping of the rivet section, so that a gap is formed between a wall of the hole and a punch of the die, which is provided for the reshaping of the rivet section. The rivet section is introduced into the gap in a course of the fastening process and is reshaped by the punch in order to engage behind the workpiece in the region of the hole.

A die button for the punching in and fastening of a fastener element having a piercing section to a planar workpiece, in particular a sheet metal part. The die button includes a jacket. Also included is a die plunger movably arranged in the jacket. Further included is a biasing device for pressing the plunger against the workpiece when the workpiece is supported on the jacket with a pressing force made available by the biasing device and selected such that the die plunger first moves when a slug has been detached from the workpiece by the piercing section of the fastener element.

A finished component assembly includes a sheet metal part, a sheet metal element and a rivet element. The rivet element is provided with a head part of larger diameter, which serves as a thread carrier and which forms a sheet metal contact surface, as well as with a hollow cylindrical rivet section of smaller diameter. The rivet section projects from the head part at the side of the sheet metal contact surface and extends through an aperture and a collar of the sheet metal part as well as through a hole of the sheet metal element and is shaped into an at least L-shaped, preferably U-shaped, rivet bead at the side of the sheet metal element remote from the sheet metal part, with the sheet metal contact surface contacting the side of the sheet metal part remote from the sheet metal element.

A piercing nut element having a strength in the range between 700 and 900 MPa which is designed to be pressed into the sheet metal part. The nut element is characterized in that the self-piercing attachment of the nut element into a sheet metal part of higher strength, or into a sheet metal part with a thickness greater than 3.5 mm, the nut element is designed in such a way that the piercing section has a peripheral extending groove below the sheet metal contact surface and in that the piercing section has a piercing edge at its free end face with the piercing edge being spaced from the boundary of the groove adjacent to the piercing section by a peripheral surface having an axial height which corresponds to at least 30% and preferably to at least 50% of the sheet metal thickness, wherein the radial wall thickness of the piercing section in the region of its free end face from the outer side of the piercing section up to the nominal diameter of the thread corresponds to a thickness between 1.2 to 1.8 and preferably 1.5 times the intended sheet metal thickness.

The present invention relates to a method for the punching in and attachment of the fastener element to a planar workpiece, in particular to a sheet metal part. During the punching in of the fastener element in the workpiece a movably arranged die plunger of the die button is pressed with a predetermined pressing force against the workpiece. The pressing force is adapted such that the die plunger first moves once a slug has been cut out of the workpiece by a piercing section of the fastener element.

A self-piercing nut element having a strength in the range between 700 and 900 MPa is designed for press fitting into a sheet metal part, for the self-piercing attachment of the nut element into a higher strength sheet metal part, such that the piercing section merges directly into the sheet metal contact surface and such that the piercing section has a piercing edge at its free end face, with the piercing edge being spaced apart from the sheet metal contact surface by a peripheral surface having an axial height which corresponds to at least 30%, and preferably at least 50%, of the sheet metal thickness. The radial wall thickness of the piercing section in the region of its free end face from the outer side up to the nominal diameter of the thread corresponds to a thickness between 1.2 times, to 1.8 times, the provided sheet metal thickness.

A functional element having a shaft part and a head part has at least one feature providing security against rotation which is provided in the region of a sheet metal contact surface of the functional element. The functional element is characterized in that each feature providing security against rotation comprises a recess provided in the sheet metal contact surface of the functional element with a raised portion disposed at least substantially centrally in the recess or with a raised portion surrounding the recess. With this design the functional element can be straightforwardly be inserted in a thick sheet metal part or in a sheet metal part of higher strength and thus a security against rotation of high quality can be achieved.

A functional element in the form of a press-in element for attachment to a sheet metal part is disclosed which has a head part and a shaft part, the head part has a ring-like sheet metal contact surface within which is a ring-like axial recess which surrounds the shaft part at the transition of the head part into the shaft part. The shaft part has a plurality of peripherally distributed radial recesses extending in the axial direction between which are axially extending and radially projecting noses having raised material portions which form undercuts with the head part in the region of the ring-like recess, the undercuts being present at the positions of the radial recesses at their axial ends adjacent to the head part. Radially extending ribs providing security against rotation, or other anti-rotation security features, are provided in the base region of the ring-like recess.

Described is a press-in element for pressing into a non-pierced or pre-pierced component. The press-in element has a head part having a ring surface confronting the component and a neck part which projects away from the ring surface, i.e. from the component contact side. The head part further has a ring-like projection surrounding the neck part with a radial spacing and projecting away from the ring surface. The neck part has a radially outwardly projecting ring bead, which can be formed as a continuous ring bead or as a ring bead interrupted at points. The apex of the ring bead has an axial spacing from the ring surface which is larger than the axial spacing of the apex of the ring-like projection from the ring surface, which lies radially within this projection and together with it and the ring bead forms a pocket which receives material of the component.

The invention relates to a functional element in the form of a press-in element for attachment to a sheet metal part, wherein the functional element has a head part and a shaft part, the head part has a ring-shaped sheet metal contact surface at the side adjacent the shaft part and a ring-shaped axial recess inside this ring-shaped sheet metal contact surface and surrounding the shaft part at the transition from the head part into the shaft part. In accordance with the invention the shaft part has a plurality of circumferentially distributed radial recesses extending in the axial direction and between these noses which likewise extend axially and project radially, wherein raised material portions are present at the positions of the radial recesses at their axial ends adjacent the head part and form undercuts with the head part in the region of the ring-shaped recess.

A method for providing an electrically conductive connection between an electric terminal device having a cavity and a sheet metal part. A hollow fixing element is riveted to the sheet metal part to prevent torsion producing an electrically conductive connection between the fixing element and the sheet metal part. The assembled component is then provided with an electrically non-conductive or poorly conductive protective coating. A receptacle for the electric terminal device is configured near the front face of the fixing element, to which the electrical terminal device is attached. The receptacle prevents the torsion of the terminal device in relation to the fixing element. The sheet metal part and a thread forming or cutting screw is screwed through the cavity of the electric terminal device into the hollow fixing element to form or cut a thread. The invention also relates to a corresponding fixing element and an assembled component.
