A field sequential dichroic light valve using ferro-electric liquid crystal components and multi-layer thin film broadband polarizing beam-splitting devices as an optical switch. The field sequential dichroic light valve has a fast time response and a memory function, as well as a switch frequency larger than 180 Hz and an optical transmittance larger than 90%. Accordingly, the field sequential dichroic light valve can effectively switch R, G, B-colored light beams in time sequence, and can be applied to a full-color projection display system.

The image display apparatus comprises an illumination device provided in the invention, a synthesizing device, and a projection device.

A field sequential color projection display system, which has high brightness, high accuracy and compact size, and is light and energy saving. The field sequential color projection system comprises: a field sequential beam splitting/combining light valve module including three light valves, which can be controlled by applied energy field, for outputting polarized light of three primary colors in time sequence; a frame sequential display module for respectively displaying frames of three primary colors corresponding to the polarized light of three primary colors output in time sequence, wherein the polarized light passes through the frame sequential display module; a projection lens module for projecting the polarized light passing through the frame sequential display module onto a screen to produce a full color image.

Field sequential color projection display system

An LCD projector of two-plate type is disclosed. The LCD projector comprises a light source, a color valve, a dichroic mirror, a polarization rotating device, a polarization beam splitter, a first reflective LCD panel, a second LCD panel and a projection lens. The first reflective LCD panel is used to modulate the green light with the green component of the image signal. The red light and the blue light are modulated in a time field sequential manner by the color valve and the second reflective LCD panel.

An illumination device and an image projection apparatus having the same. The illumination device has a light source with multiple light emitting devices and an uniform illuminating means evenly distributed in front of the light source. The light emitted from the light source can thus uniformly project on a light valve. In addition, a polarization converter is used to convert the light into a usable polarization type, so as to increase the illumination efficiency. The image projection apparatus basically has three of the above mentioned illumination devices to emit three elementary color lights projecting onto a screen.

An image display is illuminated by a light source employing a plurality of low power light emitting devices. The lifetime and light intensity of the light sourceare increased by orders of magnitude. The illumination provided by the light source is made uniform to efficiently utilize the light source and so obtain optimum projection results.

A magnification-variation scanner modifies the resolution merely by changing the object distance and the image distance, with a constant focal distance. The scanner includes a light source, an object lens, an image detector, a holder for carrying the object lens, an optical path delay and a driver. The optical path delay can be located at the midway of the light path from the light source to the object lens, thereby modifying the optical path between the object surface and the object lens. In accompaniment with the movement of the object lens, the dimensions of the image projected over the image detector can be modified. The resolution can therefore be modified. The driver connects between the holder and the optical path delay. As the movements of the holder and the optical path delay are controlled by the driver, the optical path from the object surface to the object lens and that from the object lens to the image detector can be modified according to the equations of ##EQU1##
