A method for operating a heat pump () includes operating in a cooling mode wherein heat is absorbed by refrigerant in the indoor heat exchanger () and rejected by refrigerant in the outdoor heat exchanger (). The heat pump switches to operation in a heating mode wherein heat is rejected by refrigerant in the indoor heat exchanger, heat is absorbed by refrigerant in the outdoor heat exchanger, and there is an ejector () motive flow and ejector secondary flow. In the heating mode a refrigerant pressure (P) or temperature (T) is measured and, responsive to the measured refrigerant pressure or temperature, at least one of a fan speed is changed and a needle () of the ejector is actuated.

Ejector heat pump operation

A method for operating a heat pump () includes operating in a cooling mode wherein heat is absorbed by refrigerant in the indoor heat exchanger () and rejected by refrigerant in the outdoor heat exchanger (). The heat pump switches to operation in a heating mode wherein heat is rejected by refrigerant in the indoor heat exchanger, heat is absorbed by refrigerant in the outdoor heat exchanger, and there is an ejector () motive flow and ejector secondary flow. In the heating mode a refrigerant pressure (PH) or temperature (TL) is measured and, responsive to the measured refrigerant pressure or temperature, at least one of a fan speed is changed and a needle () of the ejector is actuated.

A system has a first compressor and a second compressor. A heat rejection heat exchanger is coupled to the first and second compressors to receive refrigerant compressed by the compressors. The system includes an economizer for receiving refrigerant from the heat rejection heat exchanger and reducing an enthalpy of a first portion of the received refrigerant while increasing an enthalpy of a second portion. The second portion is returned to the compressor. The ejector has a primary inlet coupled to the means to receive a first flow of the reduced enthalpy refrigerant. The ejector has a secondary inlet and an outlet. The outlet is coupled to the first compressor to return refrigerant to the first compressor. A first heat absorption heat exchanger is coupled to the economizer to receive a second flow of the reduced enthalpy refrigerant and is upstream of the secondary inlet of the ejector. A second heat absorption heat exchanger is between the outlet of the ejector and the first compressor.

Ejector cycle with dual heat absorption heat exchangers

A system has a compressor, a heat rejection heat exchanger, first and second ejectors, first and second heat absorption heat exchangers, and first and second separators. The heat rejection heat exchanger is coupled to the compressor to receive refrigerant compressed by the compressor. The first ejector has a primary inlet coupled to the heat rejection exchanger to receive refrigerant, a secondary inlet, and an outlet. The first separator has an inlet coupled to the outlet of the first ejector to receive refrigerant from the first ejector. The first separator has a gas outlet coupled to the compressor to return refrigerant to the compressor. The first separator has a liquid outlet coupled to the secondary inlet of the ejector to deliver refrigerant to the first ejector. The first heat absorption heat exchanger is coupled to the liquid outlet of the first separator to receive refrigerant and to the secondary inlet of the first ejector to deliver refrigerant to the first ejector. The second ejector has a primary inlet coupled to the liquid outlet of the first separator to receive refrigerant, a secondary inlet, and an outlet. The second separator has an inlet coupled to an outlet of the second ejector to receive refrigerant from the second ejector, a gas outlet coupled to the compressor to return refrigerant to the compressor, and a liquid outlet. The second heat absorption heat exchanger is coupled to the liquid outlet of the second separator to receive refrigerant and to the secondary inlet of the second ejector to deliver refrigerant to the second ejector.

High efficiency ejector cycle

A method of fabricating an oscillating heat pipe includes building the oscillating heat pipe with a layer-by-layer additive manufacturing process such that the oscillating heat pipe includes a body of solid material, an array of channels, an evaporator portion, and a condenser portion. The array of channels are disposed in the body and define a continuous loop through which a fluid flows. The array of channels is formed by cavities in the body as the body is formed with layer-by-layer additive manufacturing. An inner surface of a channel includes a flow directing feature that is configured to promote a first direction of flow and that is configured to provide resistance against a second direction of flow that is opposite the first direction of flow.

Method of fabricating an oscillating heat pipe

Disclosed is a thermal management system for removing heat from a power electronic heat source, the system comprising: a base plate having a plurality of fluid passages there through and extending between and inlet side of the base plate and an outlet side of the base plate; and a plurality of heat transfer pipe segments respectively attached to one or more of the plurality of fluid passages at the inlet side of the base plate and the outlet side of the base plate, the plurality of heat transfer pipe segments arranged adjacent one another, the plurality of heat transfer pipe segments containing a two-phase working fluid, and the plurality of heat transfer pipe segments forming a continuous flow path through and back into the base plate for the two-phase working fluid.

Oscillating heat pipe integrated thermal management system for power electronics

A vapor compression system () has: a compressor (); a first heat exchanger (); a second heat exchanger (); an ejector (); separator (); and an expansion device (). A plurality of conduits are positioned to define a first flowpath sequentially through: the compressor; the first heat exchanger; the ejector from a motive flow inlet through () an outlet (); and the separator, and then branching into: a first branch returning to the compressor; and a second branch passing through the expansion device and second heat exchanger to a secondary flow inlet (). The plurality of conduits are positioned to define a bypass flowpath () bypassing the motive flow inlet and rejoining the first flowpath at essentially separator pressure but away from the separator.

Ejector system and methods of operation

A heat transfer system includes a first two-phase heat transfer fluid vapor/compression circulation loop including a compressor, a heat exchanger condenser, an expansion device, and a heat absorption side of a heat exchanger evaporator/condenser. A first conduit in a closed fluid circulation loop circulates a first heat transfer fluid therethrough. A second two-phase heat transfer fluid circulation loop transfers heat to the first heat transfer fluid circulation loop through the heat exchanger evaporator/condenser, including a heat rejection side of the heat exchanger evaporator/condenser, a liquid pump, a liquid refrigerant reservoir located upstream of the liquid pump and downstream of the heat exchanger evaporator/condenser, and a heat exchanger evaporator. A second conduit in a closed fluid circulation loop circulates a second heat transfer fluid therethrough having an ASHRAE Class A toxicity and a Class 1 or 2L flammability rating.

Two-phase refrigeration system

A method of operating a heat transfer system includes starting operation of a first heat transfer fluid vapor/compression circulation loop including a fluid pumping mechanism, a heat exchanger for rejecting thermal energy from a first heat transfer fluid, and a heat absorption side of an internal heat exchanger. A first conduit in a closed fluid circulation loop circulates the first heat transfer fluid therethrough. Operation of a second two-phase heat transfer fluid circulation loop is started after starting operation of the first heat transfer fluid circulation loop. The second heat transfer fluid circulation loop transfers heat to the first heat transfer fluid circulation loop through the internal heat exchanger and includes a heat rejection side of the internal heat exchanger, a liquid pump, and a heat exchanger evaporator. A second conduit in a closed fluid circulation loop circulates a second heat transfer fluid therethrough.

Operation of a cascade air conditioning system with two-phase loop

A system () has a compressor (). A heat rejection heat exchanger () is coupled to the compressor to receive refrigerant compressed by the compressor. A non-controlled ejector () has a primary inlet coupled to the heat rejection exchanger to receive refrigerant, a secondary inlet, and an outlet. A system has a compressor, a heat rejection heat exchanger, first and second ejectors, first and second heat absorption heat exchangers, and a separator. The ejectors each have a primary inlet coupled to the heat rejection exchanger to receive refrigerant. A second heat absorption heat exchanger is coupled to the outlet of the second ejector to receive refrigerant. The separator has an inlet coupled to the outlet of the first ejector to receive refrigerant from the first ejector. The separator has a gas outlet coupled to the secondary inlet of the second ejector to deliver refrigerant to the second ejector. The separator has a liquid outlet coupled to the secondary inlet of the first ejector via the first heat absorption heat exchanger to deliver refrigerant to the first ejector.

An ejector has a primary inlet, a secondary inlet, and an outlet. A primary flowpath extends from the primary inlet to the outlet and a secondary flowpath extends from the secondary inlet to the outlet, merging with the primary flowpath. A motive nozzle surrounds the primary flowpath upstream of a junction with the secondary flowpath. The motive nozzle has a throat and an exit. In one group of embodiments, an effective area of the exit is variable. In others, the needle may extend downstream from a flow control portion or may have an upstream convergent surface of a flow control portion.

Ejector

A system () has a first compressor () and a second compressor (). A first heat absorption heat exchanger () is coupled to the economizer to receive a second flow of the reduced enthalpy refrigerant and is upstream of the secondary inlet of the ejector. A second heat absorption heat exchanger () is between the outlet of the ejector and the first compressor.

An ejector () has a primary inlet (), a secondary inlet (), and an outlet (). A primary flowpath extends from the primary inlet () to the outlet () and a secondary flowpath extends from the secondary inlet () to the outlet (), merging with the primary flowpath. A motive nozzle () surrounds the primary flowpath upstream of a junction with the secondary flowpath. The motive nozzle () has a throat () and an exit (). The ejector () further has a means () for varying an effective area of the exit () or simultaneously varying the effective area of the exit () and an effective area of the throat ().

A system has a compressor (). A heat rejection heat exchanger () is coupled to the compressor to receive refrigerant compressed by the compressor. The system has a heat absorption heat exchanger (). The system includes a separator () comprising a vessel having an interior. The separator has an inlet, a first outlet, and a second outlet. An inlet conduit may extend from the inlet and may have the conduit outlet positioned to discharge an inlet flow into the vessel interior to cause the inlet flow to hit a wall before passing to a liquid refrigerant accumulation in the vessel.
