The present invention relates to fluorine substituted cation-disordered lithium metal oxides for high capacity lithium-ion battery electrodes suitable for use in lithium-ion rechargeable batteries having a general formula: LiMOF, wherein 0.05≤x≤0.3 and 0<y≤0.3 and M is a transition metal, such as Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zr, Nb, Mo, Sn, Sb, and combinations thereof. The fluorine-substituted cation-disordered materials of the present invention demonstrate improved electrochemical performance, showing high capacity and high voltage. The present invention also relates to methods of making the fluorine-substituted cation-disordered materials.

Fluorine substituted cation-disordered lithium metal oxides and methods of making same

Embodiments related to cation-disordered lithium metal oxide compounds, their methods of manufacture, and use are described. In one embodiment, a cation-disordered lithium metal oxide includes LiMM'Owith a greater than 1. M includes at least one redox-active species with a first oxidation state n and an oxidation state n&#x2032; greater than n, and M is chosen such that a lithium-M oxide having a formula LiMOforms a cation-disordered rocksalt structure. M&#x2032; includes at least one charge-compensating species that has an oxidation state y that is greater than n.

Cation-disordered oxides for rechargeable lithium batteries and other applications

A lithium metal oxide suitable for use as a cathode material in a rechargeable battery having a general formula of: LiMM'OF, where x is 1.80&#x3c;x&#x3c;2.20, y=1, and more specifically 1.90&#x3c;x&#x3c;2.10, with 1.80&#x3c;u&#x3c;2.20. Preferably, 1.90&#x3c;u&#x3c;2.10, and 0.80&#x3c;y&#x3c;1.20, or more specifically, 0.90&#x3c;y&#x3c;1.10. The lithium metal oxide has a cation-disordered rocksalt structure, wherein M is a transition metal selected from a first group consisting of Ni, Mn, Co, Fe, and combinations thereof. M&#x2032; is a transition metal selected from a second group consisting of Ti, Zr, Nb, Mo, Sn, Hf, Te, Sb, and combinations thereof. M has a first oxidation state q and M&#x2032; has a second oxidation state q&#x2032;, with (q/z)+(q&#x2032;/z&#x2032;)=+3, preferably +2.7&#x2264;q/z)+(q&#x2032;/z&#x2032;)&#x2264;+3.3.

High-capacity lithium metal oxyfluorides with combined metal and oxygen redox for Li-ion battery cathodes

This disclosure provides a positive electrode active lithium-excess metal oxide with composition LiMO(0.6&#x2264;y&#x2264;0.85 and 0&#x2264;x+y&#x2264;2) for a lithium secondary battery with a high reversible capacity that is insensitive with respect to cation-disorder. The material exhibits a high capacity without the requirement of overcharge during the first cycles.

High-capacity positive electrode active material

The present disclosure describes, among other things, new layered molybdenum oxides for lithium ion battery cathodes from solid solutions of LiMoOand LiCrO. These materials display high energy density, good rate capability, great safety against oxygen release at charged state due mostly to their low voltage. Therefore, these materials have properties desirable for lithium ion battery cathodes.
