Systems tune, control, or remediate the intrinsic Circadian clock. A light controller sets spectral distribution, intensity of a bioactive spectral band to shift or entrain circadian response to enhance performance and/or synchronize with local or expected conditions. The systems enhance performance under conditions that might be changing, disrupted, or otherwise present an irregular phase or unnatural change in the subject's circadian status, for example, due to geographically discontinuous activity or spectrally deficient workplace illumination, or due to divergent individual sleep/wake behaviors of subjects in a structured group activity. An illumination recipe that compensates for the deficiency of lighting or of participant sleep or behavior patterns, or age- or disease-related changes, to evoke, shift, or align circadian response and improve behaviors such as classroom alertness, relaxation, excitability, attention, or focus. Systems may receive sensed light values and automatically apply high- and/or low-CER illumination to effect the intended circadian phase.

Lighting system for circadian control and enhanced performance

Devices and methods are provided for a nanocomposite having a phase change polymer matrix and conductive nanoparticles to provide greatly enhanced responsivity to temperature and/or humidity. A sensing film includes carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and the polymer. Operation near the transition temperature increases the TCR by over an order of magnitude, thus providing a new platform for devices such as IR sensors, bolometers and imaging elements, MEMS devices, compensating or uncompensated circuit elements and other electronic devices. Nanocomposite films may be under about one micron thick, and coatings, constant environment chambers or mounts, and other engineered improvements and variations may be provided to further enhance the response, range, response times or sensitivity of the film-based devices. One embodiment employs a nanocomposite film under one micron in thickness to operate as an uncooled but highly sensitive infrared bolometer under ambient conditions.

A tunable nanomechanical resonator system comprising an array of nanofeatures, such as nanotubes, where the nanofeatures are in signal communication with means for inducing a difference in charge density in the nanofeature such that the mechanical resonant frequency of the nanofeature can be tuned, and where the nanofeature is in signal communication with a waveguide or other RF bias conduit such that an RF signal having a frequency corresponding to the mechanical resonant frequency of the array will couple to the array thereby inducing resonant motion in the array of nanofeatures, and subsequently coupling to an output waveguide, forming a nanoscale RF filter is provided. The molecular sieve device comprises an ordered array of self-assembled nano-features which function as a molecular sieve to separate molecules based on a suitable characteristic. The present invention relates to a method for synthesizing supergratings using Fourier analysis. The method divides the synthesis process into two stages: synthesis of an &ldquo;analog&rdquo; grating profile, followed by a quantization step. The method provides a generalized procedure for analog synthesis by drawing on the Fourier approximation and on finite-impulse-response (FIR) filter design theory, while it interprets the simple threshold quantization as a &ldquo;zeroth order&rdquo; Delta-Sigma Modulator, which it improves. The method of designing a supergrating for a waveguide includes providing a reflectance spectrum in at least one spectral band to be produced by a supergrating in a waveguide, the reflectance spectrum having specified reflectance features, transforming the reflectance spectrum to a Fourier domain representation having Fourier-domain features, computationally synthesizing an analog refractive index profile corresponding to the Fourier-domain representation and transforming the analog refractive index profile to a binary or multi-level refractive index profile representation in such a way as to conserve Fourier-domain information within the spectral band.

A method of producing Y-junction carbon nanotubes. An alumina template with branched growth channels is produced after which individual Y-junction carbon nanotubes are grown directly by pyrolysis of acetylene using cobalt catalysis. The use of a branched growth channel allows the natural simultaneous formation of a very large number of individual but well-aligned three-port Y-junction carbon nanotubes with excellent uniformity and control over the length (up to several tens &mgr;m) and diameter (15-100 nm) of the &ldquo;stem&rdquo; and &ldquo;branches&rdquo; separately. These Y-junctions offer the nanoelectronics community a new base material for molecular scale electronic devices including for example transistors and rectifiers.
