A ball joint with variable friction resistance for a vehicle, the joint having a stud with a joint ball which is held in a housing so as to articulate relative thereto. The housing comprises movable and static housing parts that are movable relative to one another and engage on opposite sides of the ball. A transmission is moved by one housing part so as to exert a variable pressure on the ball. The transmission has axially aligned transmission elements, each of which has a helical ball track. The transmission elements axially rest against one another via balls that are guided between the ball tracks of the transmission elements. A first transmission element can move axially and contact the movable housing part. A second transmission element can rotate about the rotational axis which causes the first transmission element to move axially and exert an axial force on the movable housing part.

Ball joint

A ball joint assembly for use in a vehicle suspension system includes a housing including a first end surface and an opposing second end surface. The housing at least one of includes an outer tie rod of a steering assembly and is configured to be coupled to the outer tie rod of the steering assembly. The housing defines a cavity and also includes an opening defined in the second end surface. The ball joint assembly also includes a ball stud coupled to the housing such that a first portion of the ball stud is positioned in the cavity and a second portion of the ball stud extends through the opening. A wire harness is coupled to the first end surface of the housing and extends away from the housing in a direction opposite the second end surface.

Vehicle suspension system including a ball joint assembly

A ball joint assembly includes a housing at least partially defining a cavity. A ball stud includes a head portion positioned within the cavity and a shaft extending from the head portion. A ball race having an inner surface is positioned within the cavity to define an interface between the inner surface of the ball race and an outer surface of the head portion. A solid friction coating is positioned within the interface. The solid friction coating is coupled to the inner surface of the ball race and/or the outer surface of the head portion of the ball stud. A piston can also be positioned within the cavity, wherein at least one gap is defined between the ball race and the piston and/or between the ball race and the housing. Methods of assembling a ball joint assembly are also disclosed.

Systems and methods for controlling a vehicle including a friction control device are provided. A method of controlling the vehicle includes operating at least one friction control device in a first of a plurality of friction modes, detecting a vehicular speed, changing operation of the at least one friction control device from the first friction mode to a second of the plurality of friction modes in response to the vehicular speed exceeding a first threshold speed value, and changing operation of the at least one friction control device from the second friction mode to the first friction mode in response to the vehicular speed falling below a second threshold speed value that is less than the first threshold speed value. The second friction mode is associated with a higher level of resistance than the first friction mode.

Systems and methods for controlling a vehicle including friction control device

A suspension damper including an actuator and a static fluid damper is provided. The actuator includes a first housing and a second housing positioned within the first housing and coaxially aligned with the first housing along an axis of the actuator. The second housing defines a passage. A piston is slidably positioned within the passage of the second housing to define a first chamber and a second chamber. A divider is positioned between an inner surface of the first housing and an outer surface of the second housing to define a third chamber and a fourth chamber. The static fluid damper includes a first damping chamber, a second damping chamber, and a third damping chamber. A separating member is positioned within the third damping chamber to define a gas chamber. First and second flow passages provide fluid communication between the actuator and the static fluid damper.

Suspension damper

A suspension damper test apparatus is provided. The suspension damper test apparatus includes a first fixture having a force sensor, a first prying device, and a first torsion device, operatively coupled to a first end of a suspension damper. A second fixture having at least one of a displacement sensor and a speed sensor, is operatively coupled to a second end of a suspension damper. A controller is in signal communication with the force sensor and the at least one of the displacement sensor and the speed sensor. The controller is configured to record signals received from one or more of the force sensor, and the at least one of the displacement sensor and the speed sensor. The signals recorded are representative of a friction of the suspension damper while the suspension damper is actuated along a longitudinal axis of the suspension damper.

A ball joint assembly may include a housing having a cavity, a friction seat received within the cavity, and a ball stud having a ball that frictionally contacts the friction seat. In one embodiment, a friction control mechanism moves the friction seat within the cavity to adjust the friction between the ball and the friction seat. In another embodiment, both the cavity and an outer surface of the friction seat may be substantially frustoconically shaped.

A controllable steering rack guide system includes a pinion having pinion gear teeth and a steering rack having rack gear teeth engaged with the pinion gear teeth of the pinion. A rack guide is radially moveable relative to the steering rack for applying a radial force to the steering rack. Vehicle including friction control device and methods

A narrow band feedback control system is provided to mitigate a disturbance within a predetermined bandwidth that is received by an electric power steering (EPS) system within a vehicle. A torque sensor calculates a torque value associated with the disturbance applied to the EPS system, the torque sensor outputs a torque signal related to the torque value. A filter receives the torque signal, filters the torque signal to the bandwidth associated with the external disturbance, and outputs a filtered torque signal. An amplifier receives the filtered torque signal, adjusts the gain of the filtered torque signal, and outputs a filtered, amplified torque signal. A logic module receives the filtered, amplified torque signal, generates a counter torque signal that is an inverse of the filtered, amplified torque signal and outputs the counter torque signal to the EPS system to mitigate the torque received from the external source.

An articulated vehicle system can include a first vehicle selectively and pivotally connected to a second vehicle. A first powertrain can be mounted on the first vehicle to drive a wheel mounted on the first vehicle. A second powertrain can be mounted on the second vehicle to drive a wheel mounted on the second vehicle independent from the drive of the wheel of the first vehicle. The vehicle system may also include a controller in electrical communication with each of the first powertrain, second powertrain, and steering mechanism to assist in steering and power distribution, especially when reversing the vehicle system.

A vehicular fluid damper system comprises a piston-type actuator, a static fluid damper, first and second flow passages, a first flow control valve, and a controller. The piston-type actuator comprises a cylinder and a piston that cooperate with one another to define first and second chambers. The static fluid damper defines first, second, and third dampening chambers. The first and second dampening chambers are in fluid communication with one another. The second and third dampening chambers are in fluid communication with each other. The first flow passage is in fluid communication with the first dampening chamber and the first chamber. The second flow passage is in fluid communication with the second dampening chamber and the second chamber. The controller is configured to facilitate operation of the first flow control valve to change a flow rate of fluid through the first flow passage.

A vehicle suspension friction control apparatus includes a first link having a first end and a second end, and a second link having a first end and a second end. The first end of the first link is mounted to one of a steering knuckle or a lower control arm connected to a lower part of the steering knuckle. The first end of the second link is mounted to the other of the steering knuckle or the lower control arm. A friction control joint connects the second end of the first link and the second end of the second link for controlling friction between the steering knuckle and the lower control arm.

Friction control apparatus for vehicle suspension

A vehicle excitation testing system and method can include a device for simulating a vehicular motion and vehicular vibration and then measuring response. The system is designed to test front and/or rear wheel sections of a vehicle. The testing system can include a vehicle suspension system including a wheel and chassis, an excitation actuator connected to the suspension system, and a dummy or a real vehicle body linked to the suspension system and having a frame. The frame can be positively attached to the ground surface or floor or other similar isolated and stable base surface. Measuring devices can be connected to the frame, suspension and/or wheels. When the vehicle is excited to simulate road and other conditions, the wheels, suspension system and the vehicle body vibrate. Measurement of these transmitted vibrations can be studied in order to determine how to best control unwanted or unnecessary vibrations in the vehicle.
