A method, wireless system, and medium are provided for estimating capacity for a new communication session initiated by a wireless device. The wireless system includes a base station and wireless devices that wirelessly connect to the base station. The base station executes a wireless scheduler that coordinates wireless transmission over wireless networks. The base station also executes a bandwidth estimation component to estimate available bandwidth for a new communication session. The estimated available bandwidth is used in a quick configuration message communicated from the base station to a wireless device to notify the wireless device of the capacity available at the base station and of a transmission rate for the wireless device.

A centralized security management system (CSMS) is provided to monitor a network to detect and mitigate attacks in or to the network. The CSMS includes a variety of devices located throughout the network to collect and synthesize data collected or obtained from devices operating in the network. The collected data is analyzed using behavioral engines or other software algorithms to develop trends for a normal and abnormal operating condition. The abnormal operating conditions are analyzed further to determine attacks to the devices or the network. Based on the attacks, a mitigation scheme is implemented to remove or reduce the attacks.

What is disclosed is a communication system and method of operating a communication system, where a wireless access node configured to receive packet communications from wireless devices communicating in sectors over wireless links, and the packet communications indicate an application type. A wireless access node determines wireless device identifiers of the wireless devices and sector identifiers of the sectors and transfers the packet communications, the wireless device identifiers, and the sector identifiers. A packet processing system is configured to receive the packet communications, the wireless device identifiers, and the sector identifiers; determine the application types of the packet communications; determine sector activity profiles by way of the application types, the wireless device identifiers, and the sector identifiers; determine a quality-of-service policies based on the activity profiles; and transfer the quality-of-service policies. The wireless access node is configured to receive the quality-of-service policies and enforce a level of service to the wireless devices over the wireless links based on the quality-of-service policies.

A method and apparatus for processing mobile-IP registration messages. Upon receipt of a mobile-IP registration request (RRQ) message that designates a care-of address matching the mobile-IP home agent's IP address, the RRQ would be dropped. Alternatively, before deciding to drop such an RRQ, the invention may further involve determining whether the home agent is currently functioning as a foreign agent for the requesting mobile node, which would justify the care-of address matching the home agent's IP address. If the home agent is not currently functioning as a foreign agent for the mobile node, then the RRQ would be dropped. On the other hand, if the home agent is currently functioning as a foreign agent for the mobile node, then RRQ processing would proceed as normal.
