Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to systems and methods for calibrating light-emitting diode (LED) light engines. The systems and methods described herein include characterizing the performance of a red-green-blue (RGB) LED light engine so as to enable the display of calibrated, dimensionless output values that accurately reflect a perceived brightness of illumination generated by the light engine for a specific output color.

A 3D display apparatus and method that address the vergence-accommodation conflict. A display screen component includes a display screen pixel array adapted to display a display screen image, a microlens imaging component including an array of microlenses corresponding to the display screen pixel array that can form a virtual or a real image of the display screen image, and a controllable movement component coupled to the imaging component or the display screen, wherein the imaging component and the display screen are controllably movable relative to each other, further wherein upon a controlled movement of the imaging component relative to the display screen, a location of the virtual or the real image along an optical axis is controllably changed.

3D display apparatus, method, and applications

Apparatus (systems) and methods are described for generating and displaying a virtual true 3D image viewable by a single eye of a viewer. A fixed-curve mirror is translated along an optical axis in synchrony with a temporally-modulated 2D image generator to generate a virtual image in multiple virtual image planes, enabling depth perception of the image by a single eye of the viewer.

A lens barrel assembly for a camera is disclosed. The lens barrel assembly comprises a lens barrel, at least one optical element disposed within the lens barrel, and an actuator configured to move the optical element. The actuator can be disposed entirely or partially within the lens barrel. The actuator can be a MEMS actuator, such as a MEMS actuator that is formed at least partially of silicon. The optical element can be a lens.

Lens barrel assembly for a camera

Various lens barrels and lenses are provided which may be used in miniature cameras. In one example, a lens barrel assembly includes a substantially cylindrical lens barrel with a first end including a first aperture and a second end including a second aperture. The first end further includes a first substantially annular portion having a first diameter and a first external surface. The first end also includes a second substantially annular portion having a second diameter and a second external surface. The second diameter is smaller than the first diameter and greater than a diameter of the first aperture. The first external surface of the first substantially annular portion is recessed in relation to the second external surface of the second substantially annular portion. The lens barrel assembly may also include a lens having a portion that protrudes from the second aperture of the second end of the housing.

A lens system for a miniature camera includes an imager and four cylindrical lenses disposed concentrically on an optical axis of the lens system. The lenses include, in order from a front end of the lens system to a back end thereof, a first lens, a second lens, a third lens and a fourth lens. The first lens has a positive power and aspheric front and back surfaces, the second lens has a negative power and aspheric front and back surfaces, the third lens is made of glass, has a positive power, a plano front surface and a spherical convex back surface, and the fourth lens has a negative power and aspheric front and back surfaces.

The lens barrel assembly comprises a lens barrel, at least one optical element disposed within the lens barrel, and an actuator configured to move the optical element. A method and system for enhancing the resolution of a camera are disclosed. For example, a single lens can be placed at a predetermined position and the position of a lens assembly can be adjusted so as to enhance the resolution of the camera. The single lens can then be moved so as to effect focusing of the camera while the position of the lens assembly tends to maintain enhanced resolution thereof.

An optical system for a miniature camera is disclosed. The optical system can have a lens holder including mounting features to position a plurality of lenses. The mounting features can include mounting features that are configured to position a first plastic lens proximate an aperture end portion of the lens holder and/or mounting features that are configured to position a glass plano-convex lens along an optical path through an interior of the lens holder with a substantially planar surface of the glass plano-convex lens positioned toward the aperture end portion of the lens holder.

An improved lens barrel and related methods are provided. For example, in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, a lens barrel includes a housing comprising a first section having a first diameter and a second section having a second diameter. A first lens element having a diameter approximately equal to the first diameter of the first section is enclosed by the first section of the housing. A second lens element is provided having a diameter approximately equal to the second diameter of the second section.

Lens barrel

A lens assembly suitable for use in miniature cameras is disclosed. The lens assembly can have a plurality of glass lenses having spherical surfaces and a single plastic lens having aspheric surfaces, for example. Optionally, all of the lenses can be disposed within a common lens barrel. A pupil plane can be located just in front of the first lens to provide a small chief ray angle. Both the cost of the lens assembly and alignment sensitivity are advantageously mitigated.
