A system for assisting a rescuer in performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a patient includes: a proximity sensor configured to be positioned at a location corresponding to a location of a rescuer's hand when delivering compressions to a patient's chest, the proximity sensor configured to produce a signal indicative of the rescuer's hands being released from the patient's chest; a medical device operatively coupled with the proximity sensor and configured to provide resuscitative treatment to the patient; and a controller communicatively coupled with the medical device and the proximity sensor. The controller is configured to: determine, based upon the signal from the proximity sensor, if the rescuer's hands have been released from the patient's chest, and trigger an action by the medical device in response to a determination that the rescuer's hands have been released from the patient's chest.

A medical device includes a display area that has a thin panel having a substantially flat front surface portion, a translucent layer on a back surface of the thin panel, a layer of text or graphics on a back surface of the translucent layer, and arranged so that the text or graphics is not visible to a user on the front side when light is not provided from inside the device housing, a switch to allow a user to select a first mode or a second mode for the device, and circuitry arranged to energize one or more light sources to provide light from behind the thin panel when the device is in the first mode, and to thereby make visible the text or graphics when the device is in the first mode.

A system for assisting a rescuer includes: a chest compression sensor configured to sense movement of the patient's chest and a second sensor configured to sense information indicative of whether the rescuer's hand is in contact with or is not in contact with the patient's chest. The second sensor is configured to be positioned on the patient's chest at a location corresponding to a location of the rescuer's hand when delivering chest compressions to the patient's chest. The system also includes a feedback device and a computing unit. The computing unit is configured to cause the feedback device to provide chest compression feedback based on a determined chest compression rate and chest compression depth and to provide chest release feedback based on a determination of whether the rescuer is releasing the chest in between chest compressions.

A multi-mode electronic medical device for providing resuscitative therapy. The device comprising a housing having a front side positioned to be visible to a user of the device during use, and a user-selectable input to allow the user to select between a basic life support mode and an advanced life support mode. The device further comprising a display on the front of the device housing configured to display a first set of text and/or graphics in the basic life support mode and to display a second set of text and/or graphics, which are more complete than the first set of text and/or graphics, when the device is switched to the advanced life support mode via the user-selectable input. Additionally, the device comprising circuitry configured to control the display based on whether the medical device is operating in the basic life support mode or the advanced life support mode.

An external defibrillator comprising: a unit for providing electrical stimulation of a patient; a battery module that includes: a battery housing; a plurality of battery banks within the housing, each of the battery banks being electrically isolated from each of the other battery banks within the housing and having a total lithium content of less than an amount requiring special handling procedures during transportation and storage; and a plurality of pairs of electrical contacts external to the housing, each of the pairs of electrical contacts being configured to provide an electrical connection to an associated battery bank; and a connector unit external to the battery housing that includes: a plurality of pairs of electrical contacts configured to mate with the plurality of pairs of electrical contacts of the battery module; and circuitry electrically connecting the plurality of pairs of electrical contacts of the connector unit to provide a single voltage output to the unit for providing electrical stimulation.

A system for assisting a rescuer in performing resuscitation activities on a patient is provided. The system includes at least one chest compression sensor configured to sense movement of the patient's chest and a second sensor configured to sense information indicative of whether the rescuer's hand is in contact with or is not in contact with the patient's chest. The system also includes a processor configured to: receive and process information from the chest compression sensor and the second sensor; identify occurrence of a chest compression based on information from the second sensor; and calculate chest compression depth based on the information sensed by the chest compression sensor during the identified chest compression.

Systems and methods related to the field of cardiac resuscitation, and in particular to devices for assisting rescuers in performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are described herein. In some aspects, the system includes a chest compression sensor providing movement information during a plurality of manual chest compressions performed by a rescuer on a chest of a patient; a release sensor providing information as to whether the rescuer's hands are in contact with the release sensor during manual chest compressions or not in contact with the release sensor between manual chest compressions; a computing unit; and an audio and/or visual display providing feedback received from the computing unit to the rescuer regarding chest compression rate, chest compression depth and whether the rescuer's hands are not in contact with the release sensor between manual chest compressions.

In some aspects, an external defibrillator includes a light sensor, an accelerometer, and a computing unit connected to memory that stores computer instructions for determining a compression rate for the chest compressions and determining, based on the information from the light sensor and information about the compression rate, whether a rescuer is releasing the chest of a person during manual CPR chest compressions.

A method for providing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) treatment to a person in need of emergency assistance includes obtaining from an accelerometer positioned to move in coordination with a patient's breastbone values for depths of a plurality of the chest compressions, obtaining from a light sensor affixed to the patient information about light detection, and determining, based on the information from the light sensor, whether a rescuer is releasing the chest of a patient during manual CPR chest compressions.
