A frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar system for level or distance measurement in which a frequency modulated signal to be transmitted to a target is mixed with an echo signal from the target to produce a beat signal that passes through an analog filter before being digitized and processed in a digital processor to determine the level or distance to be measured, where a test signal is generated by a signal generator, and a switch is controlled to connect the beat signal or the test signal to the analog filter, the signal generator generates the test signal as a broadband signal having a periodic waveform, e.g., a square wave, and the digital processor calculates a spectrum of the digitized filtered test signal by Fast Fourier Transform and generates a fault signal if the spectrum differs from a reference spectrum by a predetermined amount to allow for failure detection.

A method for determining a distance between a ranging device and target, wherein a valid interference profile, if already available, is subtracted from a frequency-domain echo profile that is analyzed to determine the distance of the target, where to obtain or update the valid interference profile, a low-frequency portion of the frequency-domain echo profile is stored as a temporary interference profile after each measurement, and if the target is not proximal to the ranging device and the valid interference profile is not available, the temporary interference profile is saved as the valid interference profile, otherwise if the valid interference profile is available, the valid interference profile is updated via the temporary interference profile, otherwise if the target is distal and the valid interference profile is not yet available, the temporary interference profile is first subjected to a quality check before being saved as the valid interference profile.

Method for determining a distance between an FMCW ranging device and a target

A method for considering an echo amplitude profile as a result of convoluting a single echo with a channel response sequence, wherein for multiple echo detection, an estimation task is broken into three major steps comprising estimating a channel response, recovering a full shape of a single echo, and iteratively updating the channel response and echo shape to increase their accuracy. The estimation of the channel response is treated as a single echo detection problem and includes estimating the strongest echo for its position and amplitude, removing an echo corresponding to this recovered channel from the echo amplitude profile, and repeating the preceding steps for the next strongest echo.
