Various embodiments include apparatus and methods to inspect casing defects in a pipe such as a casing associated with a drilling operation. Electrical connectors contacting the inside wall of the pipe can be used to generate a current in the pipe. Magnetic fields correlated to an anomaly or anomalies that alter the current can be sensed to identify the presence of the anomaly or anomalies. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

Defects inspection through detection of magnetic fields

Various embodiments include apparatus and methods to make resistivity measurements in a borehole using tool having an array of electrodes operable to provide focused currents, measure corresponding voltages, and measure corresponding voltage differences to determine resistivity. Apparatus and methods of data inversion

According to aspects of the present disclosure, systems and methods for measuring fluid resistivity are described herein. An example system may include a non-conductive tube. The non-conductive tube may be filled with a fluid, such as a formation fluid or drilling fluid, whose resistivity needs to be determined. A transmitter may be disposed around an outer surface of the non-conductive tube. A first receiver may be disposed around the outer surface of the non-conductive tube, and a second receiver may be positioned within a bore of the non-conductive tube. The transmitter may generate a primary electromagnetic field in a fluid within the tube, which may in turn generate an eddy current and a secondary electromagnetic field. The first and second receivers may be used to identify the eddy current and the resistivity of the fluid.

Method and apparatus to detect a conductive body

An electromagnetic perforation device for well casings includes a coil disposed around a core carried by a mandrel. The device further includes a power supply coupled to a current supply device, which is coupled to said coil. A stabilizing member extends from the mandrel and spaced apart on the mandrel from the coil core. The electromagnetic performance device may be positioned in a well casing, and the current supply device may rapidly supply a current to the coil to created an electromagnetic field in the coil and simultaneously induces a magnetic field in the well casing. The coil, current, and well casing may be selected such that electromagnetic field and the magnetic field produce repulsive magnetic forces that are sufficient to overcome a yield strength of the well casing and perforate the well casing.

A rotary steerable drilling tool with an electromagnetic steering system can include a drill collar, a bit shaft, an orientation control module, a mud tube, a mud tube coupler, a universal joint, a mud sealing device, and a drill bit. The bit shaft can be mechanically coupled to the drill collar through the universal joint and the orientation control module and rotate about the universal joint. The orientation and the inclination angle of the bit shaft against the drill collar can be controlled by the orientation control module with the electromagnetic steering system. The orientation control module can include an array of electromagnets, an array of permanent magnets, a rotor, and a set of bearings. The orientation control module can be coupled to the bit shaft through the rotor. The movement of the rotor can be driven by the interaction between the array of electromagnets and the array of permanent magnets.

Rotary steerable drilling tool with electromagnetic steering system

Multi-array laterolog tool systems and methods acquire a set of array measurements sufficient to provide laterolog tool measurements of differing array sizes. Such systems and method offer multiple depths of investigation while offering greater measurement stability in borehole environments having high resistivity contrasts. In at least some system embodiments, a wireline or LWD tool body has a center electrode positioned between multiple pairs of guard electrodes and a pair of return electrodes. The tool's electronics provide a current from the center electrode to the pair of return electrodes and currents from each pair of guard electrodes to the pair of return electrodes. Each of the currents may be distinguishable by frequency or distinguishable by some other means. This novel arrangement of currents provides a complete set of measurements that enables one tool to simultaneously emulate a whole range of laterolog tools.

Multi-array laterolog tools and methods with differential voltage measurements

A rotary steerable drilling tool with an electromagnetic steering system can include a drill collar, a bit shaft, an orientation control module, a mud tube, a mud tube coupler, a universal joint, a mud sealing device, and a drill bit. The bit shaft can be mechanically coupled to the drill collar through the universal joint and the orientation control module and rotate about the universal joint. The orientation and the inclination angle of the bit shaft against the drill collar can be controlled by the orientation control module with the electromagnetic steering system. The orientation control module can include a guide track mounted on the inside wall of the drill collar, arrays of electromagnets mounted on the guide track, a positioning frame, a permanent magnet mounted on the positioning frame, a coupling tube, and at least two bearing wheels. A corresponding electromagnetic steering method is also provided.

Rotary steerable drilling tool with a linear motor

Logging tools and methods for obtaining a three-dimensional (3D) image of the region around a borehole. In at least some embodiments, a 3D imaging tool rotates, transmitting pulses that are approximately a nanosecond long and measuring the time it takes to receive reflections of these pulses. Multiple receivers are employed to provide accurate triangulation of the reflectors. In some cases, multiple transmitters are employed to obtain compensated measurements, i.e., measurements that compensate for variations in the receiver electronics. Because reflections occur at boundaries between materials having different dielectric constants, the 3D imaging tool can map out such boundaries in the neighborhood of the borehole. Such boundaries can include: the borehole wall itself, boundaries between different formation materials, faults or other discontinuities in a formation, and boundaries between fluids in a formation. Depending on various factors, the size of the borehole neighborhood mapped out can be as large as 1 meter.

A method for performing detection of a bed boundary can include deploying a tool body with a longitudinal axis in a borehole, modulating the magnetic moments of electromagnetic signals to be transmitted by the first transmitter and the second transmitter, firing the first transmitter and the second transmitter substantially simultaneously, utilizing the receiver to receive and measure the modulated electromagnetic signals from the first transmitter and the second transmitter, and computing the orientation and location of the bed boundary based on the amplitudes and phases of the electromagnetic signals received and measured at the receiver. The tool body can be deployed with a first transmitter, a second transmitter, and a receiver, all of which are oriented in different directions. The vector of the total magnetic moment of the modulated electromagnetic signals can electrically rotate during firing. A corresponding apparatus for detection of a bed boundary is also provided.

Apparatus and method for bed boundary detection

A method and system for calculating formation porosity is presented. The method includes calculating formation porosity of a borehole by obtaining complex dielectric constant measurements with a high frequency dielectric tool. Next, a dielectric constant of formation water is derived from the complex dielectric constant measurements. Finally, a formation porosity is determined based at least in part on the measured complex dielectric constant and the derived dielectric constant formation water.

Dielectric tool-based formation porosity logging system and methods

Various embodiments include apparatus and methods of determining resistivity of fluids downhole in a well. The apparatus and methods may include using a sensor that employs a focused electric dipole as a transmitter and a uses a receiver to detect the electric current strength in the fluid under measurement responsive to the transmitter. Fluid resistivity sensor

In accordance with aspects of the present invention, a method of inspecting a well tubular is disclosed. The method utilizes a probe with a transmitter and detectors spaced from the transmitter by at least twice the diameter of the pipe to be tested. In some cases where multi-tubular structures are tested, the probe can include further detectors spaced from the transmitter by at least twice the diameter of the outer pipes as well. The phase of signals detected by the detectors relative to the transmitter are utilized to detect faults in the pipes.
