For logical multicasting in overlay networks, at a data processing system, an original unicast packet is received from a first component in a first computing node in an overlay network. To cause multicasting in the overlay network the received original unicast packet was unicast by the first computing node only to the data processing system, and a multicast data structure for the overlay network is maintained only by the data processing system, the multicast data structure containing information of each receiver that is configured to receive unicast packets during logical multicasting in the overlay network. From a set of subscriber receivers in the multicast data structure, a subset of the subscriber receivers is selected. A copy of the original unicast packet is unicast to each subscriber receiver in the subset.

Logical multicasting in overlay networks

The present invention discloses an overlay switch (OSW) and a method used by the same. A received unicast packet needs to pass a waypoint chain including a number of waypoints. A network address of a first waypoint of the waypoint chain and an underlay network address of a second OSW connected to the first waypoint are obtained. In response to a determination that the second OSW is not the first OSW the unicast packet is encapsulated into a first underlay network packet according to a specification of an overlay network. A field of a destination header of the first underlay network packet includes the underlay network address of the second OSW. A source port field of a user datagram protocol (UDP) header is set to indicate a waypoint index included in a corresponding waypoint chain. The first underlay network packet is sent to the second OSW.

Overlay switch

In an approach for achieving resilience and load balancing control over layer 2 gateways in a cluster, a processor forms a cluster, wherein the cluster includes one or more layer 2 gateways. A processor registers endpoints for a tenant system attached to a virtual network through a bridge network to add to an endpoint database used to associate a destination MAC address with the cluster. A processor distributes flow of data.

The present disclosure provides a method and device for use by a routing switch device. In response to a determination to switch the routing switch device to switch from a conventional mode to an OpenFlow mode the following operations are performed. Table items of a forwarding table in the conventional mode are converted to flow table items in the OpenFlow mode. The converted flow table items are stored in a flow table of the routing switch device. Processing a received data packet based, at least in part, on the converted flow table items stored in the flow table.

Transitioning a routing switch device between network protocols

Methods, computer program products, and systems are presented. The methods include, for instance: locating, by one or more processor, at least one virtual machine within a virtual network, wherein gratuitous address resolution functionality of the at least one virtual machine is inactive; and providing, by the one or more processor, location information of the at least one virtual machine. In one embodiment, the locating comprises: receiving an IP address of the at least one virtual machine; and selecting a virtual machine hosting network device from a computing network node table, where the computing network node table comprises at least one network connection record of the silent virtual machine network device hosting a silent virtual machine having a known MAC address and an unknown IP address; and querying the silent virtual machine network device for a MAC address corresponding to the IP address of the at least one virtual machine.
