A collimating lens () is disclosed that is rotationally symmetric around an axis (). The lens comprises a first body portion () comprising an outer surface () having at least one recess () arranged to receive a plurality of light sources () and an inner surface () opposing the outer surface, said inner surface delimiting a cavity () and tapering inwardly into the first body portion; and a second body portion () extending from the first body portion opposite said cavity and terminating in a light exit window (), said second body portion having a further outer surface () extending between the outer surface of the first body portion and the light exit window and expanding away from the first body portion. Also disclosed is a lighting device that comprises such a collimating lens.

Collimating lens and lighting device

A luminaire has a light source carrier around a central light output window, with light sources facing a first, at least partially upward, direction. An upper reflector cover reflects light to a range of light output directions, at least partially downwardly, through the central window opening. A lens structure is formed over the set of light sources having a light diffusing output area and reflecting side walls extending between the light sources and the light diffusing output area. This design enables the luminaire to be very slim. The design may also avoid the need for a light diffusing output window.

Luminaire

The invention provides a luminaire comprising an optical element configured to spread light uniformly across a full visible face of the luminaire. The optical element comprises a central region and an outer peripheral region, each configured to receive light emitted by a light source arrangement and to direct this light out through a respective region of the light exit area of the luminaire. The central region receives light through a central transmissive surface portion which partially bounds it across its top. A further reflective tapered portion of the central region acts to reflect light incident at either of its two opposing sides, and provides a mixing function both within the central region of the optical element and within an inner compartment of the luminaire which extends between the optical element and the housing.
