Disclosed is a wide-band dispersion controlled optical fiber. The optical fiber enables the use of optical signals in various wavelength regions in a wavelength division multiplexing mode communication network by controlling the position of the zero dispersion wavelength, and enables long distance transmission by controlling dispersion slope and bending loss. Furthermore, there is an advantage in that the optical fiber enables not only short distance transmission but also middle/long distance transmission using a single type of optical fiber because the optical fiber is controlled to have negative dispersion values in the O-band wavelength region and positive dispersion values with small deviations in the C-band and L-band wavelength regions.

Wide-band dispersion controlled optical fiber

Disclosed is an optical fiber comprising a center core which forms a passageway for transmitting optical signals and has a refractive index N, and a cladding which encloses the center core and has a refractive index N. The optical fiber further comprises an upper core, which has a distribution of refractive indices increased starting from a refractive index N(&#x3e;N) at its outer circumference to the refractive index Nat its internal circumference, and a minutely depressed refractive index region, which is interposed between said upper core and cladding and has a refractive index N. The refractive index Nis lower than the refractive index N.

Dispersion-controlled optical fiber

Disclosed is an amplifying optical fiber for amplifying optical signal transmitted therethrough by stimulated emission, the amplifying optical fiber comprising: an inner core disposed at a center of said optical fiber and containing MX, GaSand RE; an outer core surrounding said inner core and containing SiO; and a cladding surrounding said outer core and containing SiO, wherein said M contained in MX is one component selected from the group consisting of Na, K, Rb and Cs; said X contained in MX is one component selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, Br, and I; and said RE is one component selected from the group consisting of Ce, Pr, Pm, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Dy, Er, Tm and Yb.

Amplifying optical fiber and method for fabricating the same

A wide band dispersion-controlled fiber which comprises a core forming an optical signal transmission path and having a peak refractive index, and a cladding surrounding the core and having a peak refractive index lower than the peak refractive index of the core. The wide band dispersion-controlled fiber further comprises at least one dispersion control layer arranged between the core and the cladding and having a refractive index profile such that its refractive index increases from an inner periphery to an outer periphery. The minimum refractive index of the dispersion control layer is less than the peak refractive indices of the core and cladding.

Wide band dispersion-controlled fiber

An optical fiber preform manufacturing method whereby a clad layer and core layer are deposited on the inner surface of a preform tube for forming a deposited tube. One end of the deposited tube is shrunk and closed. The deposited tube which has a closed end is arranged extending vertically through a circular heater. A heat is applied to the deposited tube at a temperature lower than the softening point of a deposited tube, exhausting contaminants existing in the interior of the deposited tube while moving the circular heater. The heating temperature of the circular heater is then set to a temperature not lower than the softening point of the deposited tube-to shrink and close the deposited tube.

Disclosed are an optical fiber preform manufacturing apparatus and method in which processes for shrinking and closing a deposited tube are conducted using a device suitable for those processes, which device is other than the device used in a deposition process for forming the deposited tube on the inner surface of a preform tube, thereby reducing the processing time while reducing the amount of OH penetrated from the preform tube into a vitreous component of the deposited tube, thereby achieving a reduction in OH loss. In accordance with the optical fiber preform manufacturing apparatus and method, operations are conducted which involve setting the heating temperature of a circular heater to a temperature lower than the softening point of a deposited tube, exhausting contaminants existing in the interior of the deposited tube while moving the circular heater at a desired temperature, setting the heating temperature of the circular heater to a temperature not lower than the softening point of the deposited tube, and shrinking and closing the deposited tube while moving the circular heater to a desired temperature.

Optical fiber preform manufacturing apparatus

An apparatus and process for cooling a quartz tube used in fabrication of an optical fiber preform by modified chemical vapor deposition. The apparatus has a nozzle ring supplied with a coolant. The nozzle ring has at least two vent sections that are be separatable for detaching the quartz tube from a lathe during processing, and a plurality of vents formed along the inside of the two vent sections for ejecting the coolant.

Cooling apparatus used in fabrication of optical fiber preform

A method of and an apparatus for erbium-doped optical fibers usable as an optical amplifier allowing optical signals to be directly amplified by themselves, which method and apparatus are capable of reducing manufacturing time while increasing productivity. The methods includes the steps of closing one end of a quartz tube deposited with a clad layer and a core layer, injecting a solution containing erbium and other additive elements into the quartz tube, thereby absorbing the solution in the core layer, removing the solution from the quartz tube after a predetermined period of time elapses, clamping the quartz tube to a clamping chuck via a connecting tube which is connected to the quartz tube, opening again the closed end of the quartz tube, injecting a large amount of gas into the quartz tube, heating the connecting tube by the heating source to a predetermined temperature, thereby warming the gas introduced in the quartz tube, rotating the clamping chuck to uniformly heat the quartz tube, thereby slowly drying the solution absorbed in the core layer of the quartz tube, and heating again the quartz tube by the heating source, thereby softening the quartz tube. Thereafter, the quartz tube may be collapsed into a condensed erbium-doped optical fiber preform, or both ends of the quartz tube may be completely sealed to form an erbium-doped optical fiber preform having a hollow cylindrical structure.
