The present invention relates to a process of reducing sulfur- or nitrogen-containing compounds and producing oxygenates, and in particular to a one-pot process of reducing sulfur- or nitrogen-containing compounds and also producing oxygenates in the presence of a homogeneous catalyst such as M/a first solvent or M/a second solvent/M/a third solvent or a mixture thereof, the process herein being useful as an excellent octane booster in the reformulated gasoline and as a cetane booster for the future oxygenated diesel in a one-pot reaction.

The present invention relates to a method for preparing aromatic carboxylic acid from alkylaromatics by liquid-phase oxidation. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method for preparing aromatic carboxylic acid from alkylaromatics by oxidation in acetic acid as solvent with oxygen-containing gas in the presence of cobalt/manganese/bromine complex catalyst, wherein nickel and carbon dioxide in an appropriate amount are added to increase an activity of cobalt/manganese/bromine complex catalyst. Especially nickel has a synergistic effect with carbon dioxide and maximize the to formation of the desired product having the corresponding carboxylic groups to the number of alkyl groups in a reactant.

Method for preparing aromatic carboxylic acids from alkylaromatics by liquid-phase oxidation

An improved production method of aromatic carboxylic acid products of significantly improved yield and quality by oxidizing alkyl aromatic substrates or their partially oxidized intermediates in a conventional MC-type catalyst system modified to contain additional components such as alkali metal or alkaline earth metal in an acetic acid medium in a feed gas containing oxygen and optionally carbon dioxide. Since carbon dioxide functioned as a co-oxidant along with oxygen in the oxidation reaction, the oxidation reaction proceeds more selectively to produce the carboxylic acid product much faster under milder reaction conditions over the conventional MC-type oxidation. In particular, the oxidation of para-xylene carried out by the novel present method enabled production of terephthalic acid of higher yield and enhanced quality, which were improved far more than the extent that generally could be expected by current PTA producers. The present invention also provides an effective purification process to produce highly pure terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid by the oxidation of impurities such as 4-carboxybenzaldehyde and para-toluic acid or 3-carboxybenzaldehyde and meta-toluic acid contaminated in crude terephthalic acid and isophthalic acid product, respectively.

Method of producing aromatic carboxylic acids by oxidizing alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons or partially oxidized intermediates thereof

An improved production method of aromatic carboxylic acid products of significantly improved yield and quality, the method including oxidizing alkyl aromatic substrates or their partially oxidized intermediates in a catalyst system containing a conventional catalyst and, if deemed necessary, additional components such as a transition metal or lanthanide series metal, in an acetic acid medium, with a feed gas containing both oxygen and carbon dioxide. Since carbon dioxide functions as a co-oxidant along with oxygen in the oxidation reaction, the oxidation reaction proceeds more selectively to produce the carboxylic acid product much faster under milder reaction conditions as compared to the conventional oxidation. The present invention also can be utilized as an effective purification process to produce highly pure terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid by oxidation of impurities such as 4-carboxybenzaldehyde and para-toluic acid or 3-carboxybenzaldehyde and meta-toluic acid which are contaminated in crude terephthalic acid and isophthalic acid products, respectively.

A product of reduced sulfur content is produced from a feedstock which is comprised of a mixture of hydrocarbons and contains organic sulfur compounds as unwanted impurities. The process comprises converting at least a portion of the sulfur-containing impurities to sulfur-containing products of higher boiling point by treatment with an alkylating agent in the presence of an acid catalyst and removing at least a portion of these higher boiling products by fractional distillation. Suitable alkylating agents include alcohols and olefins. In a preferred embodiment, catalytic cracking products which contain aromatic sulfur compounds as impurities are used as a feedstock for the process.

Sulfur removal process

A product of reduced sulfur content is produced from a feedstock which is comprised of a mixture of hydrocarbons and contains organic sulfur compounds as unwanted impurities. The process comprises converting at least a portion of the sulfur-containing impurities to sulfur-containing products of higher boiling point by treatment with an alkylating agent in the presence of an acid catalyst and removing at least a portion of these higher boiling products by fractional distillation. The process can be carried out in a distillation column reactor wherein the acid catalyzed reaction and fractional distillation are carried out simultaneously. Suitable alkylating agents include alcohols and olefins.

Sulfur removal by catalytic distillation

Compositions comprising certain metal-containing materials distributed interactively on a deboronated HAMS-1B crystalline borosilicate molecular sieve which are useful for catalytically oxidizing or oxidatively dehydrogenating organic compounds such as alkanes, aromatics, and alkyl-substituted aromatics are described. Alkanes are oxidatively dehydrogenated to olefins, and an aromatic compound such as benzene can be oxidized by nitric and/or nitrous oxide to largely phenol or largely nitrobenzene depending upon the oxidation temperature. When the compound is a methylaromatic, oxidation produces an aromatic aldehyde. Alkyl groups larger than methyl oxidatively dehydrogenate to alkenyl groups. The compositions can be used in a process to separate p-xylene from a mixture of its isomers based upon the ability of the compositions, which preferably comprise a iron molybdenum material interactively distributed on a deboronated HAMS-1B crystalline borosilicate molecular sieve, to selectively oxidize the p-xylene to an aldehyde or dialdehyde while not substantially oxidizing the ortho and metaxylene isomers. Such partially oxidized mixtures of p-xylene are useful to make TPAA or as feeds to a water-based, further oxidation to make terephthalic acid. Carbon dioxide used as a carrier gas with a methylaromatic feed to the oxidation catalyst is shown to have a beneficial effect on yield and selectivity.

Catalytic oxidation and oxidative dehydrogenation using

A composition of matter comprising at least one metal-containing spinel which includes a first metal and a second metal having a valence higher than the valence of the first metal, a minor amount of at least one-third metal component effective to promote the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide at sulfur dioxide oxidation conditions, and a minor amount of at least one-fourth metal component effective to promote the reduction of first metal sulfate at first metal sulfate reduction conditions. These compositions are useful, e.g., in hydrocarbon conversion processes, to reduce sulfur oxide and/or nitrogen oxide atmospheric emissions.
