A liquid crystal display device includes a first liquid crystal display panel including a first light-transmitting substrate (thickness T2&#x2264;0.3 mm), a substrate, a first liquid crystal, a first polarizing plate having a second main surface that is adhered to the first light-transmitting substrate; an adhering layer provided on a first main surface of the first polarizing plate; and a second light-transmitting substrate (thickness T3&#x2264;0.3 mm) adhered to the first main surface by the adhering layer (thickness T1&#x2264;0.15 mm). An adhesion parameter &#x3b1; is 1.04 or less when a maximum height of an unevenness of the first main surface 0.0005 mm or less, and the adhesion parameter &#x3b1; is 0.43 or less when the maximum height of the unevenness of the first main surface is greater than 0.0005 mm and 0.001 mm or less.

A Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), a backlight used for the LCD and a method for producing the LCD and the backlight are provided which are capable of inhibiting an increase in component counts and in assembling processes and of reducing them, thereby achieving low costs. A display image is obtained by arranging a backlight section being able to perform scanning as a single unit in a manner that it positionally matches a liquid crystal displaying section. The backlight section is provided with a plurality of scanning electrodes and light emitting layers each providing a different luminescent color, and being spatially separated from each other on a principal face of the backlight and scanning is performed on a plurality of light emitting layers providing a different luminescent color.

A liquid crystal display accommodates a reflective portion with a concavo-convex reflecting pixel electrode for reflecting incident light from the display face side, and a transmissive portion with a transmissive pixel electrode for transmitting light output from the backlight. In a wide viewing angle region, luminance of the reflective portion is greater than the transmissive portion. In other angle regions, luminance of the transmissive portion is greater than the reflective portion. In a wide viewing field mode, the reflective portion and transmissive portion both perform normal display. In the narrow viewing field mode, the transmissive portion performs normal display, while the reflective portion performs cancelling data display, thereby rendering unviewable the display content of the transmissive portion from beyond a certain viewing angle. Thus, a semi-transmissive liquid crystal display device and a portable terminal device is switchable between a narrow viewing field mode and a wide viewing field mode.

A liquid-crystal display device makes it possible to attach an optical element to a liquid-crystal display panel with high positional accuracy while avoiding or minimizing the enlargement of the picture-frame region (i.e., the non-display region) induced by the formation of markers on the panel and the increase of the fabrication cost. The panel comprises a main substrate, an opposite substrate, and a liquid crystal enclosed in a gap between the main and opposite substrates, wherein a polarizer plate is attached at least to the opposite substrate. Markers for attaching an optical element to the panel are formed at positions that overlap with the polarizer plate in a non-display region on the main or opposite substrate. Alignment direction regulators regulate the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules to a predetermined direction in the vicinities of the markers, allowing light to pass through at least the opposite substrate.

An IPS-mode transflective LCD device includes an array of pixels each including a reflective region and a transmissive region. The reflective region operates in a normally-white mode, and the transmissive region operates in a normally-black mode. A first potential is applied to a liquid crystal layer in the reflective region, and a second potential is applied to the liquid crystal layer in the transmissive region. The first and second potential have therebetween an opposite magnitude relationship in each of the pixels.

Methods for driving a transflective liquid crystal display device

An IPS-mode transflective LCD device includes an array of pixels each including a reflective region and a transmissive region. A first pixel electrode and a first common electrode are formed in the reflective region, and a second pixel electrode and a second common electrode are formed in the transmissive region. The first and second pixel electrodes receive a common pixel signal. The first common electrode receives a first common signal which is common among the reflective regions of a plurality of pixels, and the second common electrode receives a second common signal which is common among the transmissive regions of the plurality of pixels.

A liquid crystal display device comprises a liquid crystal panel including sub-pixels and a back light for irradiating light to the back surface of liquid crystal panel. A transmission sub-pixel can be switched into an image display state which can allow irradiated light to exit, and a black display state which does not allow irradiated light to exit. A mirror sub-pixel can be switched between a mirror state which can allow reflected light to exit and a non-mirror state which does not allow reflected light to exit, independently of the transmission sub-pixel. A control unit places each transmission sub-pixel into the image display state or black display state, and places each mirror sub-pixel into the mirror state or non-mirror state.

A liquid crystal display element accommodates a reflective portion provided with a concavo-convex reflecting pixel electrode for reflecting incident light from the display face side and displaying information, and a transmissive portion provided with a transmissive pixel electrode for transmitting light that is output from the backlight. The voltages applied to the reflective portion and the transmissive portion are controlled independently. The reflective portion and the transmissive portion have wide viewing angle characteristics. In a wide viewing angle region greater than a certain angle, the luminance of the reflective portion is greater than the luminance of the transmissive portion, whereas in other angle regions the luminance of the transmissive portion is greater than the luminance of the reflective portion. In a wide viewing field mode, the reflective portion and transmissive portion both perform normal display, whereas in the narrow viewing field mode, the transmissive portion performs normal display, while the reflective portion performs cancelling data display, thereby rendering unviewable the display content of the transmissive portion from beyond a certain viewing angle. It is thus possible to provide a semi-transmissive liquid crystal display device and a portable terminal device switchable between a narrow viewing field mode and a wide viewing field mode.

To suppress bad shaping generated due to fusion of neighboring cylindrical lenses in a lens sheet formed by using an ultraviolet curable resin, for example. A lens sheet includes: a substrate formed with a transparent material; a plurality of protruded lines provided on the substrate in parallel at a specific pitch; and a plurality of cylindrical lenses, each of which is provided between the plurality of protruded lines on the substrate. The protruded line for forming the lens is designed to be constituted with a set of two lines, i.e., a left protruded line and a right protruded line, to suppress fusion of the neighboring lenses.
