A method and system for identifying a blind spot in one or more decoupled measurements. The method may comprise disposing an electromagnetic well measurement system into a wellbore. The electromagnetic well measurement system comprise an electromagnetic transmitter and a plurality of electromagnetic receivers. The method may further comprise transmitting electromagnetic fields into a formation with the electromagnetic transmitter, measuring the electromagnetic fields with the plurality of electromagnetic receivers as one or more measurements at one or more depths in the wellbore, decoupling the one or more measurements to form decoupled measurements, identifying if a blind spot is in the decoupled measurements, and performing an inversion with the decoupled measurements.

Compound signal for logging while drilling resistivity inversion

A geosignal is calculated based on a signal detected by a multicomponent resistivity tool () to facilitate determination of formation properties and infer location of the resistivity tool with respect to formation boundaries. The resistivity tool () detects an electromagnetic field response signal () at a series of azimuth angles () during one tool rotation. The signal measured at each azimuth angle is decoupled to obtain nonzero electromagnetic field tensor components for input into the geosignal calculation. The results of the geosignal calculation for at least a top bin (i.e., an azimuth angle of 360 degrees) and a bottom bin (i.e., an azimuth angle of 180 degrees) are evaluated to determine whether the tool () is near a formation boundary. If the tool is determined to be near a formation boundary, the resistivity of the layers of the formation on each side of the detected boundary can be inferred.

Determining formation properties based on multi-component azimuthal measurements

A method includes detecting, via first and second receivers of a tool that are oriented at a first and a third tilt angle, respectively, a first and second measurement of a first signal transmitted by a transmitter of the tool that is oriented at a second tilt angle into a substantially non-conductive material. The method includes determining, based on the first and second measurements, a first tensor and conveying the tool into a first wellbore formed in a subsurface formation. The method includes detecting, via the first receiver and the second receiver, a third and fourth measurement, respectively, of a second signal transmitted by the transmitter and determining, based on the third and fourth measurements, a second tensor and determining a third tensor (having values independent of the first, second, and third tilt angles) based on a relationship between the first and second tensors.

Electromagnetic tool calibration for tilted antennas with undetermined orientation angles

Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to calibrating a formation signal for a mixed set measurement device. A first air-hang response of a first measurement device for a tubular string associated with a drilling operation can be measured. A second air-hang response of a second measurement device for the tubular string associated with the drilling operation can be measured. The first air-hang response and the second air-hang response can be used to determine a mixed air-hang response of the mixed set measurement device. The mixed air-hang response can be used to calibrate a formation signal for the mixed set measurement device.

Data filtering and processing techniques for generating improved wellbore resistivity maps are contemplated. In some aspects, a process of the disclosed technology includes steps for receiving a plurality of measurement sets, wherein each measurement set includes electromagnetic field data associated with a geologic formation, performing an inversion on each of the plurality of measurement sets to generate a corresponding plurality of formation profiles, and applying a filter to each of the formation profiles to generate a plurality of profile clusters. In some aspects, the process can further include steps for selecting a representative cluster from among the profile clusters for use in generating a wellbore resistivity map. Systems and machine-readable media are also provided.

Enhanced inversion imaging

A method of fabricating a ferrite for use in a resistivity logging tool includes providing an uncured ferrite material, and pressing the uncured ferrite material into a channel to form the ferrite. The channel is defined on a surface of a bobbin associated with the resistivity logging tool, and the channel can be arcuate and extend at an angle offset from a central axis of the bobbin. The uncured ferrite material is then cured in place within the channels on the bobbin.

Logging tool ferrites and methods of manufacture

A measurement device can be provided for a tubular string of a drilling subsystem. The measurement device can include a transmitter and a receiver. A cover can be applied to at least one of the receiver or the transmitter. While at least one of the receiver or the transmitter is covered by the cover, an amount of crosstalk can be measured. The cover can be removed from the measurement device. Subsequent to removing the cover from the measurement device, an air-hang response of the receiver and the transmitter can be measured in an air-hang configuration of the tubular string. A corrected air-hang response of the measurement device can be determined by subtracting the amount of crosstalk from the air-hang response.

Systems and methods of the present disclosure relate to calibration of a resistivity tool. A method for in-situ calibration of a resistivity logging tool, comprises transmitting signals with transmitters of the resistivity logging tool; measuring voltages at two or more receivers located at different distances to the transmitters of the resistivity logging tool; decoupling two or more sets of multi-component tensors at two or more receivers based on the measured voltages; calculating a ratio signal from two or more sets of multi-component tensors; obtaining an apparent resistivity based on the ratio signal; simulating a dipole response tensor at the first receiver based on the apparent resistivity; comparing the first set of multi-component tensor with the dipole response tensor to acquire an in-situ calibration factor; and applying the in-situ calibration factor to multi-components for an inversion input.

In-situ calibration for multi-component signals

A method comprises determining a plurality of responses at a plurality of tilted angles for multiple coils of a collocated antenna assembly based on at least one coil parameter of the collocated antenna assembly, wherein the at least one coil parameter comprises at least one of a number of coil turns, a coil size, and a number of coils. The method includes determining crosstalk between the multiple coils at each of the plurality of tilted angles from the plurality of responses. The method includes determining a signal-to-noise ratio for each of the plurality of tilted angles based on the crosstalk. The method also includes selecting a tilted angle for the collocated antenna assembly corresponding to an optimal signal-to-noise ratio of the determined signal-to-noise ratios.

A system and method for determining an uncertainty of a distance to bed boundary (DTBB) inversion of a geologic formation. The system or method includes receiving logging data from a borehole tool, performing a first DTBB inversion using the logging data to calculate first DTBB solutions, adding quantified noise to the logging data to produce an adjusted signal, performing a second DTBB inversion using the adjusted signal to calculate second DTBB solutions, comparing the first DTBB solutions to the second DTBB solutions to determine an uncertainty of the first DTBB solutions based on a relationship of the quantified noise and the difference between the first DTBB solutions and the second DTBB solutions.

Determining distance to bed boundary uncertainty for borehole drilling

Raw signal measurements can be received by sensors in a wellbore. Borehole effects can affect the raw signal measurements. The raw signal measurements can be converted into ratio signals having attenuation and phase shift. An apparent resistivity can be determined from the ratio signals. Mud resistivity can be determined based on apparent resistivity, at least part of the raw signal measurements, and the borehole size. A true resistivity can be determined based on the mud resistivity and at least part of the ratio signals. The raw signal measurements and the ratio signals can be updated based on the true resistivity. Steps can be repeated to determine a corrected true resistivity. Based on the true resistivity value and updated raw signal measurements and ratio signals, an operating characteristic of a well tool can be caused to be adjusted.

One or more first formation measurements sensitive to around a sensor string of a drill string deployed in a subsurface formation is received, A 1-D inversion of the first formation measurements is performed at a first reference point. One or more second formation measurements sensitive to ahead of a drill bit of the drill string deployed in the subsurface formation is received. A 1-D inversion of the second formation measurements is performed at a second reference point ahead of the drill bit of the sensor string to determine formation properties ahead of the drill bit, wherein the 1-D inversion of the second formation measurements is based on inversion results associated with the 1-D inversion of the first formation measurements.

A method and system for detecting a conductive member in a formation. The method may comprise disposing an electromagnetic induction tool into a wellbore, transmitting the electromagnetic field from the at least one electromagnetic source, energizing the conductive member in a second wellbore, wherein an eddy current is induced in the conductive member, transmitting a second electromagnetic field from the conductive member, wherein the second electromagnetic field is formed by the eddy current, sensing the second electromagnetic field with the receiver, recording an amplitude of the second electromagnetic field as data, and transmitting the data to an information handling system. A system for detecting a conductive member in a formation may comprise an electromagnetic induction tool. The electromagnetic induction tool may comprise at least one electromagnetic source and at least one receiver. The system may further comprise an information handling system.

Determination on casing and formation properties using electromagnetic measurements

A compact sub assembly and well measurement system. The compact sub assembly may comprise a deep transmitter disposed about one end of the compact sub assembly, a shallow dual transmitter disposed on the compact sub assembly between the deep transmitter and a second end of the compact sub assembly, a shallow dual-collocated receiver disposed on the compact sub assembly between the deep transmitter and a second end of the compact sub assembly, and a deep receiver disposed about the second end of the compact sub assembly. A well measurement system for decoupling a component signal may comprise a logging tool. The logging tool may comprise a first sub assembly and a conveyance attached to the logging tool. In examples the first sub assembly is a compact sub assembly comprising a deep transmitter, a shallow dual transmitter, a shallow dual-collocated receiver, and a deep receiver.
