A method for reviewing broadcast channels. The method including: capturing at least one broadcast channel at a first site at a reduced quality from its broadcast quality; receiving the at least one reduced quality broadcast channel at a second site, the second site being remote from the first site; and reviewing the at least one reduced quality broadcast channel at the second site. Preferably, the reduced quality broadcast channel is captured on a video server corresponding to an Internet address and is downloaded from the Internet via a wireless transmission to a cellular phone, PDA, or the like.

To afford copy protection for information, e.g. elementary streams, from a service provider while in transit between a point of deployment (POD) module and a set-top box, the information is accompanied by control information pairs. The pairs are respectively associated with the portions of the copy protected information and are incorporated into a shared key calculation in the POD module and set-top box. The shared keys are used by the POD module and set-top box to encrypt and decrypt the information. Tampering with a control information pair, as by an intruder or hacker, prevents keys shared by the set-top box and POD module from matching. A mismatch prevents the set-top box from correctly decrypting information received from the deployment module.

System and method for copy protecting transmitted information

A removable card is adapted for insertion into a corresponding receptacle of a host device, and includes a processor for running at least one application. An agent program is downloadable from the removable card to the host device. The agent program runs on a processor of the host device and controls communication between the application running on the processor of the removable card and at least one application running on the processor of the host device. A different agent program may be downloaded from the card to the host device for each of the applications running on the removable card processor, and each such agent program controls communications between its corresponding removable card application and one or more application programming interfaces (APIs) of applications running on the host device processor.

A system for decrypting transmissions encrypted by a transmission station includes a receiver having a first conditional access module embedded within the receiver, and a second conditional access module that is removable from the receiver. The first conditional access module decrypts a first signal transmitted by the transmission station and the second conditional access module decrypts a second signal transmitted by the transmission station. The first and second signals are encrypted by separate conditional access modules. The transmission station provides the receiver with an entitlement code for allowing the receiver to decrypt the transmission upon verification by the transmission station that the receiver is entitled to decrypt the transmission.

System and method for hybrid conditional access for receivers of encrypted transmissions

A method of decoding using a log posterior probability ratio L(u), which is a function of forward variable &#x3b1; (.) and backward variable &#x3b2; (.). The method comprises dividing the forward variable &#x3b1; (.) and the backward variable &#x3b2; (.) into, for example, two segments p and q, where p plus q equal the length of the code word U. The forward segments &#x3b1; (.) are parallel calculated, and the backward segments &#x3b2; (.) are parallel calculated. The ratio L(u) is calculated using the parallel calculated segments of &#x3b1; (.) and &#x3b2; (.).

A monitoring system for monitoring a direction of a monitored device when the monitored device is positioned further than a predetermined distance from a monitoring device. The monitoring device receives a locator signal from the monitored device and produces a direction indication that indicates the direction of the received locator signal. If the monitoring device no longer receives the locator signal, the direction indication indicates the direction of the last received locator signal.

The user places his or her fingers upon the touch pad in positions representing the keys of the keyboard. One quickly adjusts to the use of this improvised keyboard and is able to sense where to place one's fingers. Very quickly, an average user can be rapidly entering lengthy textual messages with ease.

A multi-point touch pad device having a base with a top surface that defines a plane. A support layer has a top surface and a bottom surface. The top surface of the support layer contains a plurality of strain gauges that are disposed on the top surface of the support layer in a matrix configuration. A touch layer is disposed on top of the strain gauge matrix; the touch layer is joined to the top of the strain gauge matrix. Sensor wires connect the strain gauges to a processor which is programmed with an algorithm to measure the location and pressure of simultaneous, multiple touches.

A digital television (DTV) system includes a remote controller which generates X- and Y-axis position data; and an electronic pro gram guide (EPG) controller which receives position data responsive to the X- and Y-axis position data, which generates character data responsive to the position data, which searches EPG data for character strings approximating the character data to thereby generate search results, and which outputs the search results to the screen of the DTV. According to one aspect of the DTV system, the remote controller generates the X- and Y-axis position data responsive to movement of the remote controller. This movement can be determined by either accelerometers or a gyroscope included in the remote controller. According to another aspect of the invention, the X- and Y-axis position data can be generated by a pointing device, which can be either a touch panel or a trackball. A method for operating the DTV system responsive to changes in position data generated with respect to a remote controller is also described.

Digital television (DTV) including a smart electronic program guide (EPG) and operating methods therefor

A remote control device includes a motion detection circuit operative to generate signals indicative of a direction of movement of the device. A processor receives the signals from the motion detection circuit and generates corresponding control signals suitable for transmission to a receiver. A user is thereby able to indicate entry of particular commands by moving the remote control device in a certain way. For example, movement of the remote control device in a particular direction in a first plane may correspond to an up command for a first controlled parameter, e.g., receiver volume, while movement of the remote control device in an opposite direction in the first plane corresponds to a down command for the first controlled parameter. Similarly, movement of the remote control in a particular direction in a second plane perpendicular to the first plane may correspond to an up command for a second controlled parameter, e.g., channel selection, while movement of the remote control device in an opposite direction in the second plane corresponds to a down command for the second controlled parameter.
