A liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate, a second substrate facing the first substrate, and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate. The liquid crystal layer includes liquid crystal molecules having a negative dielectric anisotropy, a response speed of about 4.0 ms or less, and a rotational viscosity of about 47 mPa&#xb7;S to about 75 mPa&#xb7;S.

A display apparatus includes a lower substrate, an upper substrate facing the lower substrate, an optical medium layer between the lower and upper substrates, a display area at which an image is displayed, and a peripheral area adjacent to the display area and at which the image is not displayed.
