A liquid crystal display device for displaying an image by changing orientation of a liquid crystal layer sealed between two substrates includes a lower substrate having a microstructure which outputs light incident on a side surface of the lower substrate to an upper surface of the lower substrate, a light source emitting light to the side surface of the lower substrate, a selective reflection panel provided on the upper surface of the lower substrate to reflect light having a predetermined incident angle or more and transmit the remaining light, and a reflection panel provided under the lower substrate.

Liquid crystal display device

A backlight unit is provided including a light guide panel (LGP), a point light source emitting light at an edge of the LGP; and a refraction member being positioned between the point light source and the LGP and refracting the light emitted from the point light source toward the optical axis of the point light source in order to reduce the azimuth angle of the light that is incident upon the LGP. The refraction member includes a prism array in which a V-shaped prism pattern is repeatedly arrayed, the apex of the prism pattern facing the edge of the LGP, and a transparent portion that prevents the light from being totally reflected by the prism pattern in a region along an optical axis of the light source.

Backlight unit

A backlight unit includes a point light source emitting light and a light guide panel including a holographic pattern formed to have a concentric circle shape having a center at the point light center. Thus, since the incident azimuth angle of light incident on the holographic pattern can be made constant, an efficiency of light exhausted through the light exhaust surface can be improved. Also, since the distribution of the exhaust azimuth angle of the exhaust light can be made uniform, a uniform brightness can be obtained from the exhaust surface.

A method of manufacturing an optical disc includes easily removing a bump formed on a circumference of the optical disc during forming a transparent layer by using a spin-coating method to form the optical disk having a high-density recording capacity. The method includes preparing a substrate having a diameter larger than that of a desired disc, applying an ultraviolet hardening resin to the substrate and forming a transparent layer having a predetermined thickness by a spin-coating method, illuminating an ultraviolet ray on the transparent layer and a bump formed on a circumference of the transparent layer to be hardened, and cutting out the bump by using a puncher. According to the method, the bump which inevitably occurs when the transparent layer is formed, can be easily cut out by a puncher.

Method of and apparatus for manufacturing optical disc

A backlight unit includes a light guide panel where a holographic pattern is formed. A point light source emits light to an edge of the light guide panel. A refractive member is provided between the point light source and the light guide panel and reduces an azimuth angle of light incident on the light guide panel. The refractive member includes, from an optical axis of the point light source, a light transmission zone transmitting light as it is, a blaze zone where a blaze pattern having a saw-toothed shape in which one surface near the optical axis and substantially parallel to the optical axis is formed, and a prism zone where a triangular prism pattern is formed. The backlight unit may further include a diffusive member diffusing light emitted from the point light source to be incident on the refractive member.

An illumination apparatus for planar display devices, including an optical element for making light travel parallel to an optical axis, is provided. The illumination apparatus includes a dot light source for radiating light, and a light guide plate having the optical element. The optical element is composed of a first refraction facet, which is adjacent to the dot light source and increases the emission angle of the light, and a second refraction facet, which is isolated a predetermined distance from the first refraction facet while facing the first refraction facet and reduces the emission angle of the light. In this structure, the light travels parallel to the optical axis. In the illumination apparatus, the emission angle of incident light is reduced, preferably, the light travels parallel to the optical axis. Therefore, areas not reached by light, between adjacent dot light sources, are eliminated, and light is uniformly incident upon a hologram so that the luminance and intensity of light emitted from the light guide plate are uniformly distributed.

Illumination apparatus for planar display device

An optical bench with improved structure, in which tolerance for misalignment of optical elements becomes great with shortened optical path, the optical bench including a substrate and input and output optical fibers arranged on the substrate with a predetermined separation gap therebetween, where far ends of the input and output optical fibers form a zigzag pattern to guide input and output beams. Input and output optical elements are arranged at the far end of each input and output optical fiber, respectively, condensing and/or diverging the input and output beams. Micro-mirrors receive the input beam from the input optical elements and reflecting the received input beam toward predetermined channels.

Optical bench

A display connection structure of an electronic appliance is disclosed. The display connection structure includes a main body; a display for receiving an image signal from the main body and displaying an image; a connection unit including hinge pins rotatably installed at the main body, and housing provided at the display so as to be connected to the hinge pins and to pivot together with the hinge pins for detachably connecting the display to the main body; and an optical connector having portions provided at the main body and the display to correspond to each other for transmitting an image signal by light.

Display connection structure of electronic appliance

A bidirectional signal transmission device using light which adopts a photodiode-incorporated vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) as light devices so that signal transmission and reception between facing light devices is achieved via the same channel, is provided. This bidirectional signal transmission device includes first and second light devices having a VCSEL part and a photodiode part incorporated with the VCSEL part, at least one optical fiber installed between the first and second light devices, and diffraction elements installed between the first light device and the input/output port of the optical fiber and between the second light device and the output port of the optical fiber, respectively, for selectively diffracting incident light so that light output from the optical fiber is received by the photodiode part, so that a received light signal having a high S/N ratio can be detected.

Bidirectional signal transmission device using light

An optical pickup capable of use with disks each having a different thickness, including two optical modules each having a light source having a different wavelength, and a photodetector for receiving reflected light. The optical pickup selects a proper light source out of two light sources each having a different wavelength, according to the type of disk and the information which is to be reproduced, and records/reproduces information stored in the disk under optimum conditions according to the thickness of the disk.

Optical pickup for using disks each having a different thickness

A hologram optical pick-up device using a first and second laser sources emit laser beams having different wavelengths, which are then focused by an objective lens on a disc, and reflected at a surface of the disc. The reflected laser beams are diffracted by a first hologram or a second hologram, and then received by a first photo detector or a second photo detector. Accordingly, a laser beam having an adjustable wavelength according to a thickness and a recording surface of the disc is emitted by the first laser source or the second laser source in order compensate the aberration of the laser beam due to the thickness of the disc. Thereby, the same hologram optical pick-up device can reproduce data from discs having different recording surfaces without loss of data. Also, the hologram optical pick-up can record and reproduce data on/from any disc with an increased efficiency of the laser beam.
