A preferential oxidation reactor for removing carbon monoxide in a hydrogen mixture gas is disclosed. The preferential oxidation reactor may include a housing having a catalytic layer provided therein, a mixture gas supply portion inserted into the interior of the housing and penetrating the catalytic layer, a condensate receiving portion contained within the housing and in fluid communication with a gas outlet port of the mixture gas supply portion and condensate control tubes arranged in the catalytic layer of the housing and in fluid communication with the condensate receiving portion. The condensate control tubes may have a capillary structure. A fuel cell system including the preferential oxidation reactor is also disclosed.

Preferential oxidation reactor and fuel cell system using the same

A catalytic combustor and a fuel reformer having the same. The catalytic combustor includes a housing having a cylindrical reaction portion and a second reaction portion surrounding the first reaction portion in a double tube shape. The housing has a first opening for supplying a first fuel and an oxidant to the first reaction portion and a second opening through which an exhaust in the second reaction portion is discharged. The first and second openings are disposed at first sides of the first and second reaction portions, respectively. The first and second reaction portions are connected with each other so that the fluid is communicated with the first and second reaction portions at second sides of the first and second reaction portions. A catalyst is disposed in the first reaction portion, and a mesh layer is inserted into the second reaction portion.

Catalytic combustor and fuel reformer having the same

A burner nozzle assembly includes: a nozzle plate having an anode off-gas (AOG) nozzle at the center of the nozzle plate and a plurality of oxidation fuel nozzles surrounding the AOG nozzle; and a channel unit coupling the AOG nozzle with an AOG introducer to allow an AOG to flow therebetween and coupling the oxidation fuel nozzles with an oxidation fuel introducer to allow an oxidation fuel to flow therebetween.

Burner nozzle assembly and fuel reformer having the same

A reformer including a heating unit, a first combustor for receiving and oxidizing a heating unit fuel at a first end of the heating unit, and a second combustor for receiving and oxidizing an anode off gas at a second end of the heating unit, a reforming unit having a first reforming portion surrounding the heating unit, a second reforming portion surrounding the first reforming portion, and a flow path portion connecting the first reforming portion and the second reforming portion to provide fluid communication therebetween, and a heat resistant shield between the flow path portion and the second combustor. Here, the heat resistant shield protects the reforming unit from being distorted by thermal expansion caused by the heating unit. In addition, the flow path portion may be formed with a blade configured to further protect the connector from being distorted by thermal expansion.

An evaporator and a fuel reformer having the same. The evaporator includes a wall arrangement having a circumferential wall and a bottom wall, the circumferential wall and the bottom wall defining (or surrounding) an evaporation chamber; an inlet provided at one side of the evaporation chamber; an outlet formed in the bottom wall; and a barrier at (or surrounding) the outlet and projected from the bottom wall to the inside of the evaporation chamber.

Evaporator and fuel reformer having the same

An auto ignition type autothermal reformer (ATR) performs reproducible ignition using a catalyst that performs ignition without a separate ignition unit, such as an igniter or heating wire, and a fuel cell system having the ATR. The ATR includes a reaction container having a first opening through which a fuel is introduced into the reaction container and a second opening through which a reformate is discharged from the reaction container, the fuel having a mixture of an aqueous primary fuel solution and hydrogen peroxide; a first catalyst disposed adjacent to the first opening in the reaction container, the first catalyst being a granular catalyst; a second catalyst disposed at the rear portion of the first catalyst to promote an autothermal reforming reaction; and a third catalyst disposed at the rear portion of the second catalyst to promote an oxidation reaction.

Auto ignition type autothermal reformer and fuel cell system having the same

A fuel reformer including a reaction container including a first chamber, a first reactor in the first chamber, the first reactor, including a first catalyst, being configured to produce a first reformate by performing a steam reforming reaction on a first fuel, and having a first gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) at a set flow rate, a first heat source thermally connected to the first reactor, and a second reactor connected to the first reactor, the second reactor including a second catalyst, being configured to produce a second reformate having a lower carbon monoxide content than the first reformate, and having a second GHSV greater than the first GHSV at the set flow rate.

Fuel reformer

A method of driving a heating unit for a fuel cell reformer, a reformer applied with the method for driving the heating unit, and/or a fuel cell system including the reformer. The method includes: supplying an oxidant to the heating unit and absorbing the oxidant by a fuel oxidizing catalyst of the heating unit; supplying a fuel at an excessive amount to the heating unit and absorbing the fuel by the fuel oxidizing catalyst of the heating unit; and supplying the fuel and the oxidant to the heating unit at a stoichiometric ratio of the fuel to the oxidant ranging from 1:1 to 2:1, wherein the heating unit generates heat through an oxidizing catalyst reaction between the fuel and the oxidant.

Method of driving heating unit for reformer, and reformer and fuel cell system including the same

A fuel reforming apparatus including reaction substrates is provided. The reaction substrates of the present invention is made of stainless steel, nickel steel, or chromium steel. Each of the reaction substrates has a channel formed on the surface of the reaction substrate. Reactant for oxidation reaction or for fuel reforming reaction flow through the channel. A catalyst containing layer is formed on the surface of the channel by directly oxidizing the surface of the channel. Therefore, the catalyst containing layer is formed with oxidized steel. A catalyst layer is formed on the catalyst containing layer. A pair of substrates can be laminated to make one substrate a thermal source unit and another a reforming reaction unit.

Fuel reforming apparatus and manufacturing method thereof

A plate-type heat exchanger for use in a fuel cell system that has a fuel cell stack and a reformer is provided. The heat exchanger includes a substrate and a pair of cover plates. The substrate has a first face and a second face opposite to the first face. The substrate is disposed between the cover plates, and combined with the cover plates to form a first passageway and a second passageway. The first passageway is formed in the first face and circulates steam discharged from the fuel cell stack. The steam or water condensed from the steam is supplied to a water supply source. The second passageway is formed in the second face, and circulates water supplied from the water supply source. The water is supplied to the reformer after the circulation. The heat exchanger of the present invention improves performance and efficiency of a fuel cell system.

A fuel supply apparatus includes a fuel distribution part having a first opening part and a second opening part, the fuel distribution part configured to alternately discharge a fuel from the first opening part and the second opening part; and a housing having a first channel and a second channel, wherein an intermediate part of the first channel is coupled to and in fluid communication with the first opening part, and an intermediate part of the second channel is coupled to and in fluid communication with the second opening part.

Fuel supply apparatus for a combustor

A carbon monoxide treatment apparatus according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention includes: a reactor body; a partitioning plate located inside the reactor body for partitioning an internal space of the reactor body into a first section and a second section; a channel member in the first section for transporting an introduced gas including a reformed gas and an oxidant gas to the second section; and a reaction unit around the channel member of the first section for reducing a concentration level of carbon monoxide in the introduced gas moving through the first section by utilizing a preferential oxidation reaction of the carbon monoxide and the oxidant gas of the introduced gas, wherein moisture of the introduced gas that has been partially condensed when passing through the channel member is stored in the second section.

Carbon monoxide treatment apparatus for fuel cell

A reformer for a fuel cell system includes a heating source for generating heat by a reaction of a fuel and an oxidant using an oxidizing catalyst, and a reforming reaction part for generating hydrogen by a reforming catalyst reaction. The oxidizing catalyst includes a solid acid, including a strong acid ion and an inorganic oxide, and a platinum-based metal. The reformer for a fuel cell system can start a fuel oxidation catalyst reaction at a low temperature with the heating source having a simplified structure.

A fuel cell system includes a fuel cell body to generate electrical energy using a reaction of hydrogen and oxygen; a reformer to generate a reformed gas containing hydrogen by reforming fuel and to supply the reformed gas to the fuel cell body; a fuel tank to store the fuel in a partially liquefied state and to supply the fuel to the reformer; a case to encase the fuel cell body and the reformer; and a refrigeration unit attached to the case to store ambient air of the fuel tank, the ambient air of the fuel tank being cooled by latent heat of vaporization of the fuel.

A fuel reformer including a first pipe, a second pipe which is disposed in the first pipe, a main heat source, which includes an oxidation catalyst, filling the second pipe adapted to generate thermal energy with a predetermined temperature range through an oxidation reaction of a fuel using the oxidation catalyst; an auxiliary heat source which includes a torch connected to the second pipe to ignite and burn the gaseous fuel, thereby preheating the oxidation catalyst to within a reaction starting temperature range, and a reforming reaction unit which includes a reforming catalyst filling a space between the first and second pipes to generate a reforming gas containing hydrogen through the reforming reaction of the fuel using the reforming catalyst by using the thermal energy generated by the main heat source.
