A touch screen controller is provided. The touch screen controller includes: an offset cancellation circuit configured to cancel offset capacitance of a touch screen panel including a first channel and a second channel crossing the first channel, the offset cancellation circuit connected to the touch screen panel through a sensing node; a charge amplifier configured to generate a sensing voltage from a sensing signal output from the touch screen panel, the charge amplifier including an amplifier having a first input terminal connected to the sensing node and a second input terminal to which an input voltage is applied; and a channel driver configured to provide a driving voltage, which is equal to or greater than the input voltage, to the second channel in a self capacitance sensing mode for the first channel.

A software keyboard system using the trace of a stylus and a method of recognizing key codes in accordance with the keyboard system are provided. The software keyboard system includes a screen for displaying a keyboard image or other information, a touch panel formed of a transparent material covered on the screen, for generating a coordinate value in accordance with a position pressed by a stylus, an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter for converting an analog coordinate value generated by the touch panel to a digital coordinate value, a memory for storing names of keys forming a keyboard image displayed on the screen and direction range information of a plurality of key codes assigned to each of keys, and a controller for displaying the keyboard image formed by the key names on the screen, receiving a digital value for the trace of the stylus output from the analog-to-digital (A/D) converter to retrieve a position of the stylus and a direction of the trace, reading a key code from the memory according to the stylus position and the trace direction, and outputting the key code. Thus, one key includes numerous codes, to thereby reduce the number of keys, so that the size of the keyboard is reduced without reducing the key size, to thereby facilitate use of the key.

There is provided a method for replacing a program stored in portable information terminal including a communication unit for transmitting to and receiving data from an external device, a memory unit for temporarily storing a new program and a utility program operating to carry out the replacement of a prestored program, which are received from the communication unit, and a program storage unit for storing the prestored program and replacing the prestored program with the new program. The method comprises the steps of receiving the new and utility programs via the communication unit from an external, storing the new and utility programs in the memory unit, and replacing the prestored program stored in the program storage unit with the new program, using the utility program. As described above, the program of a portable information terminal is replaced using a communication unit instead of an external card, so that the program can be replaced at low cost.

A password processing apparatus and method is provided in which a generic password or master password, in addition to an actual password, is written and verified by using an external memory device. The password processing apparatus includes an internal memory for storing an input password and a condition to read or record a generic password, a detachable storing medium, and an adaptor for writing data to and reading data from the detachable storage medium. A controller stores the password and the condition to read or record the generic password in the memory, stores the generic password in the storage medium according to the condition if the storage medium is connected to the adaptor, and compares the generic password stored in the storage medium with an input password if the input password is different from the password stored in the memory. As a result, by writing and reading an generic password to and from an external memory device using a computer or a program, utility and security of the password can be improved.

Password processing apparatus and method

A portable information terminal is provided. The terminal includes a touch screen panel having an activation area and an activating unit. The activation unit activates the portable information terminal when the terminal is turned off and an activating position on the activation area is pressed for a predetermined time. The activating unit contains a press position sensor, a press timer, and a controller. The press position sensor senses if a panel position on touch screen panel is pressed and determines a location of the panel position on the touch screen panel to generate corresponding press position data. The press timer determines if the panel position is pressed for at least a predetermined time to generate corresponding press time data. The controller inputs the press position data and the press time data, determines if the panel position is located within the activation area based on the press position data, and controls power supplied to various components of the portable information terminal such that the power is supplied when the panel position is located within the activation area and when the activation area is pressed for at least the predetermined time.

Portable information terminal and an activating method thereof

A portable information terminal capable of updating a program using a PC card, and a method for updating a program using the same, are provided. The portable information terminal is capable of updating a pre-stored program using a card in which a new program to be updated and a utility program for performing an updating operation are stored. The terminal includes a card unit for reading or writing the new program and the utility program stored in the card, a program storage unit for replacing the pre-stored program with the new program stored in the card and storing the new program, a memory for temporarily storing the new program and the utility program read by the card unit, and a controller for controlling the execution of the utility program stored in the memory so that the new program stored in the memory can be stored in the program storage unit. Thus, a program is correctly updated without an additional special device.
