Curable urea formaldehyde binder compositions are provided which are useful in coated abrasive and wood engineering applications, in a time released fashion. The time released curable binder compositions include a urea formaldehyde resin and an aryl phosphite in varying concentrations. The curable binder compositions of the present invention provide desirable working times and faster curing times tinder ambient or near ambient conditions.

Time released curing system

Binder compositions of the present invention are useful in refractory and foundry applications. The compositions include an aggregate, a liquid resole resin, and a magnesium hardening agent. The compositions are workable and exhibit high compressive strengths in a short period of time. Additionally, the compositions have a low free phenol content and require a reduced resin content as compared to currently known compositions. The compositions reduce the cost to produce useful binders by eliminating the requirement for ester curing in addition to requiring reduced amounts of resin to obtain adequate compressive strength.

High surface area magnesia curing agent

A high-carbon-yield resole by reacting formaldehyde and excess phenol to an endpoint and then cross-linking with HMTA. Similar high-carbon-yield resoles result with addition of DBE-2, furfuryl alchol and furfural.

High carbon yield phenolic resole

A method for forming resin coated refractory aggregates and the resulting resin coated aggregates which can be used for forming refractory shapes such as furnace linings, bricks, etc. The process includes contacting a heated refractory material in particulate form with a resin or resin solution which is then shaped or projected or otherwise compacted, exhibiting high green strength when cold pressed. Substantially reduced organic emissions are the result.

Phenolic coated refractory aggregates

There is provided a composition that is the product of mixing and reaction a resole, an alcoholate of an amino triazine, and aldehyde. This composition is useful as a thermosetting resin. This composition is useful as a curative for novolac resins. There is also provided a process for making this composition. In particular there is a process disclosed for making this composition in aqueous solution. Furthermore, curable novolac compositions, and processes for making these compositions, are disclosed and claimed.
