An item made of wear resistant material, the item, in certain aspects, made by a method including forming a mass of wear resistant material, the wear resistant material comprising at least one element from the group consisting of arsenic, antimony, cerium and bismuth, wherein the at least one element is present by weight as between 0.01% to 0.0001% of a total weight of the wear resistant material, wherein the wear resistant material includes by weight percent chromium 29.10-30.00%; nickel 5.00-6.00%; titanium 1.00-2.10%; boron 3.00-3.90%; silicon 1.00-2.10%; manganese 1.10-2.00%; iron-balance.

A method for applying wear resistant material to a substrate, the substrate comprised of material with a substrate coefficient of thermal expansion, the method including applying the wear resistant material to the substrate with application apparatus, the wear resistant material having a wear resistant material coefficient of thermal expansion, the substrate coefficient of thermal expansion within 15% of the wear resistant material coefficient of thermal expansion.

Hardfacing materials & methods

A method for applying wear reducing material to a tool joint useful in a wellbore in drilling operations, the method, in at least certain aspects, including positioning the tool joint adjacent laser beam apparatus, delivering wear-reducing material to a location on the tool joint to which the wear-reducing material is to be applied, heating the wear-reducing material with the laser beam apparatus to a temperature not exceeding its melting temperature so that the wear-reducing material is welded to the tool joint; in one particular aspect, using a defocused laser beam to achieve desired heating temperatures; and, in one aspect, defocusing the laser so no plasma is formed.

Methods for using a laser beam to apply wear-reducing material to tool joints

A wire for use in thermal spraying, the wire having sheath material&mdash;e.g. zinc, zinc alloy, aluminum and/or aluminum alloy, and core material, e.g. copper and/or copper alloy. A method for thermal spraying, the method including spraying a coating onto an object (e.g. but not limited to a vessel's hull with a thermal spray system, the thermal spray system using such wire or powder to produce the coating, the wire or powder including first material acting as a cathode and second material acting as a biocide for marine growth.

Wire for thermal spraying system

Two pieces of metal are joined together using an amorphous metallic joining element. In the joining operation, the joining element is placed between the two pieces to be joined. The joining element and adjacent regions of the pieces being joined are given a joining processing sequence of heating to a joining temperature, forcing the two pieces together for a period of time, and cooling. The joining element has a composition that is amorphous after the processing is complete. The joining element composition is also selected such that, after interdiffusion of elements from the pieces being joined into the joining element during processing, the resulting composition is amorphous after cooling.

Joining of metals using a bulk amorphous intermediate layer

A box tool joint member of generally tubular configuration is adapted for securement by welding to one end of a steel tube to form a drill pipe. The box tool joint member comprises a body having a cylindrical outer periphery, an internally threaded socket at one end of the body, and a weld neck of smaller outer diameter than the body adjacent to the other end of the body. A tapered transition piece connecting the neck with the adjacent end of the body provides an elevator shoulder. A correlative pin tool joint member is welded to the opposite end of the tube to complete the drill pipe. The box tool joint member has an annular band of hard facing over the outer periphery of the transition piece and extending down over the adjacent part of the weld neck and up around the adjacent part of the body. The hard facing is corrosion resistant and has a smooth finished surface. Underneath the hard facing and extending beyond both ends of the hard facing is an annular butter layer of non-hardenable steel. The tool joint member is hardened and tempered after the butter layer is welded into a body groove and before the hard facing is welded on .The butter layer is grooved before the hard facing is welded on.

Earth boring apparatus with multiple welds

A box tool joint member of generally tubular configuration is adapted for securement by welding to one end of a steel tube to form a drill pipe. The box tool joint member comprises a body having a cylindrical outer periphery, an internally threaded socket at one end of the body, and a weld neck of smaller outer diameter than the body adjacent to the other end of the body. A tapered transition piece connecting the neck with the adjacent end of the body provides an elevator shoulder. A correlative pin tool joint member is welded to the opposite end of the tube to complete the drill pipe. The box tool joint member has an annular band of hard facing over the outer periphery of the transition piece and extending down over the adjacent part of the weld neck and up around the adjacent part of the body. Underneath the hard facing and extending beyond both ends of the hard facing is an annular butter layer of non-hardenable steel. The tool joint member is hardened and tempered after the butter layer is welded into a body groove and before the hard facing is welded on. The butter layer is grooved before the hard facing is welded on.

Welding and austenitizing earth boring apparatus

An alloy steel tool joint connector is friction welded to one end of a seamless steel drill pipe tube. The weld area cools in the air as the pipe moves to a first tempering station. The weld area is brittle and too hard to machine. When the weld is below a temperature corresponding to 90% transformation from austenite to martensite, an infrared radiation responsive control viewing the weld causes an induction heating coil to be moved axially onto the end of the pipe. Energization of the coil reheats the weld area to a temperature below austenitizing but sufficient to temper the steel, and an infrared radiation responsive control viewing the pipe radially through a radial view passage in the coil deenergizes the induction heating coil and causes the coil to be withdrawn from the end of the pipe. The friction weld is then machined off inside and outside. The pipe is then moved to a rehardening station at which the weld area is heated to austenitize the steel following which it is fluid quenched to reharden it. The pipe is then moved to a second tempering station and its end is moved axially into an induction heating coil, whereupon the weld area is reheated. An infrared radiation responsive control viewing the weld obliquely through a slot in the coil's inner periphery deenergizes the coil when tempering temperature is reached. The pipe end is then withdrawn from the coil to cool in the air, such tempering toughening the weld area without unduly softening it.

A tool joint is friction welded to one end of a tube. The weld area cools in air as the pipe moves to a tempering station. When the weld is below a temperature corresponding to 90% transformation from austenite to martensite, an infrared radiation responsive control viewing the weld causes an induction heating coil to be moved axially onto the end of the pipe to reheat the weld area to a temperature below austenitizing but sufficient to temper the steel, and an infrared radiation responsive control viewing the pipe radially through a radial view passage in the coil deenergizes the coil and causes it to be withdrawn. The weld is then machined off inside and outside. The weld area is next heated to austenitize the steel, following which it is fluid quenched. At a second tempering station the pipe end is moved axially into an induction heating coil to reheat the weld area. An infrared radiation responsive control viewing the weld obliquely through a slot in the coil's inner periphery deenergizes the coil at the prescribed temperature. The pipe end is then withdrawn from the coil and allowed to cool in the air.
