The present invention is directed at the conversion of ammonium nitrate and related compounds upon reaction with methane into compounds such as ethyl acetate, ammonia, nitrogen and hydrogen. The reaction may proceed within a fluid-solid type reactor. The reaction may be facilitated in the presence of inert or catalytic solids.

Conversion of ammonium nitrate into useful products

Technologies for combusting hazardous compounds such as chemical warfare agents and related compounds are disclosed. In embodiments, the technologies include systems and methods for combusting such compounds in an internal combustion engine, such as a spark ignition internal combustion engine, a diesel engine, or the like. The technologies described herein further include components for treating an exhaust gas stream produced by combustion of hazardous compounds. In embodiments such components include a scrubber that utilizes a scrubbing media such as soil to removing acid gases from the exhaust stream.

Chemical warfare agents and related compounds as fuel for internal combustion engines

A process for the extraction of lipids from living cells utilizing liquid carbon dioxide optionally in the presence of a porous inorganic matrix or polymer coating as well as additional solvents to improve extraction efficiency. A process for the liquefaction of carbonaceous material is described that utilizes a single liquefaction reactor that accepts mixtures of carbon monoxide and hydrogen (syngas) at any ratio and which provides for a water gas shift reaction and a hydrogenation reaction of the carbonaceous material to provide a desired hydrocarbon. The process avoids the use of a separate reactor for the water gas shift reaction and applies to carbonaceous material such as any type of coal and/or biomass containing plant and/or animal matter for conversion to a synthetic fuel.

The invention also relates to a method of operating a homogeneous charge compression ignition engine of mixing a fuel with air and feeding the fuel into a combustion chamber.

A process for treating a carbonaceous material includes reacting the carbonaceous material and a process gas in supercritical water to at least one of hydrotreat and hydrocrack the carbonaceous material to form a treated carbonaceous material. The process is preferably carried out in a deep well reactor, but can be carried out in conventional surface-based reactors at a temperature of at least 705&#xb0; F. and a pressure of at least 2500 psi.
