A method includes requesting, by a first wireless intelligent content acceleration (WICA) unit, content from a provider and receiving, by the first WICA unit, a first transmission over a backhaul link, the first transmission being based on the request. The method also includes determining whether the first transmission includes a signature without a first block of data or the signature and the first block of data. Additionally, the method includes, upon determining that the first transmission includes the signature without the first block of data, retrieving the first block of data from a content cache in accordance with the signature, and, upon determining that the first transmission includes the signature and the first block of data, saving the signature and the first block of data in the content cache. Also, the method includes processing the first block of data.

System and method for content and application acceleration in a wireless communications system

Various methods and communications devices to reduce a bandwidth utilization of a backhaul link in a wireless communications system are provided. By way of example, bandwidth utilization is reduced by relegating the compression of data to the downlink transmission, storing only reference keys in the cache of the transmitting device, and taking advantage of an asymmetrical cache structure between communicating devices. Support is provided for a user equipment to move from one node to another node.

Files and/or file updates can be pre-fetched from a server to reduce file access periods as well as shift network usage from high traffic periods to low traffic periods. For example, a file that was previously expelled from a cache can be pre-fetched from the server prior to a future period in which a client is likely to re-access the file. As another example, a file update for a file that remains stored in the cache can be pre-fetched from the server prior to a future period in which a client is likely to re-access the file. The file update may then be used to update the stored file. The file and/or updated-file can then be provided directly from the cache to the client when the client re-accesses the file.

Intelligent file pre-fetch based on access patterns

A system and method for content and application acceleration in a wireless communications system are provided. A method for transmitting data includes receiving a block of data from a content provider, generating a signature from the block of data, and determining if the signature exists in a content cache. The content cache includes previously transmitted signatures and blocks of data associated with the previously transmitted signatures. The method also includes if the signature exists in the content cache, saving the signature but not the block of data in a buffer. The method further includes if the signature does not exist in the content cache, saving the block of data in the buffer. The method additionally includes transmitting contents of the buffer over a backhaul link.

Various methods and communications devices to improve bandwidth utilization in a wireless communication network are provided. By way of example, efficient content delivery in a radio access network is achieved by using an accelerator module configured to implement a stack having, among others, a hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) layer, a transmission control protocol (TCP) layer, and a de-duplication, Lempel-Ziv (LZ) compression/decompression, and caching layer.
