A downhole transducer assembly capable of being safely operated at a variety of pressures and depths may include a turbine rotatable by a fluid pressure differential rotationally fixed to a rotor in a generator. To reduce the rotational speed of the turbine and rotor, a pressure regulator may limit a fluid pressure differential by controlling the volumetric flow. One or more nozzles may be configured to automatically regulate a nozzle diameter, and therefore the pressure drop across the nozzle. A surge protector may be connected to the generator.

Downhole transducer assemblies and pressure range control therein

A downhole transducer assembly capable of being safely operated at a variety of pressures and depths may include a turbine rotatable by a fluid pressure differential rotationally fixed to a rotor in a generator. To reduce the rotational speed of the turbine and rotor, a pressure regulator may limit a fluid pressure differential by controlling the volumetric flow. In other embodiments, one or more nozzles may be configured to automatically regulate a nozzle diameter, and therefore the pressure drop across the nozzle. In other embodiments, a surge protector may be connected to the generator.

Pressure range control in a downhole transducer assembly

A flow diverter including a bypass element to divert at least a first portion of drilling fluid from a drill string to the borehole annulus. The first portion of fluid, or bypass flow, may be provided to the borehole annulus to clear cuttings generated by a drill bit of a BHA. The remaining fluid flow, or BHA flow, may be expelled through the bottom of the BHA. The fluid discharged through the BHA may enter the annulus and flow upward with the fluid flow diverted through the flow diverter to aid in clearing cuttings. The flow diverter also includes a choke housing disposed concentrically within a drill collar and containing a plurality of chokes to regulate bypass flow. An actuation system may be coupled to the flow diverter to control opening/closing of the chokes and to measure flow rate of the first portion of fluid and/or the remaining fluid.

System and method for flow diversion

A magnetometer includes a sensor housing having an internal bore formed therethrough and a magnetic field sensor disposed within the internal bore of the sensor housing. The magnetic field sensor is fixedly mounted within the internal bore of the sensor housing. A magnetic flux concentrating block is disposed proximate to an end of the at least one magnetic field sensor. An electronics unit is disposed within the internal bore of the sensor housing and is operatively and communicatively connected to the magnetic field sensor. The electronics unit is configured to receive a signal from the magnetic field sensor.

A drilling apparatus which includes a drill bit attachable to the drilling end of a drill string, the drill bit including a bit body being attached to a shank and having a working face with at least one cutting element. The drilling apparatus also includes a jack element positioned within a bore of the bit body having a working tip substantially protruding from the working face, and which jack element is also adapted to move with respect to the bit body. One or more position feedback sensors are positioned proximate the jack element and are adapted to detect the axial and/or angular position of the jack element with respect to the bit body.

A downhole tool string component has a through-bore intermediate first and second tool joints adapted for connection to adjacent tool string components. An instrumentation package is disposed within an outer diameter of the component. The instrumentation package comprises a circuit board assembly. The circuit board assembly comprises alternating rigid and elastomeric layers. The rigid layers are in electrical communication with each other.

A downhole tool string component has a through-bore intermediate first and second tool joints adapted for connection to adjacent tool string components. A blind-hole is formed in an outer surface of the component. A processing unit is also disposed within an outer surface of the component. An electrical device that is disposed within the component is in communication with the processing unit through an electrically or optically conductive medium which has a self-aligning pattern.

A drill string having a drill bit with a bit body located between a shank and a working face. The working face has at least one cutting element and a jack element disposed partially within the drill bit body and partially protruding from the working face. The jack element is adapted to be rotated with respect to the bit body by a driving mechanism disposed within a bore of the drill string. A generator or motor with a rotor is incorporated into a torque transmitting mechanism that links the driving mechanism to the jack element, and configured so that at least one waveform is produced in the generator or motor when the jack element is rotated. The waveform is processed by an electronic processing device to determine the rotational position of the jack element.

In one aspect of the invention, a drill string comprises a drill bit with a body intermediate a shank and a working face, and the working face comprises at least one cutting element. A jack assembly is disposed within the drill bit body and comprises a jack element disposed on a distal end of the assembly. The jack element substantially protrudes from the working face and is adapted to move with respect to the bit body. At least one position feedback sensor is disposed proximate the jack assembly and is adapted to detect a position and/or orientation of the jack element.

A downhole tool string component, having a first rotor secured within a bore of the component and connected to a gear assembly, the gear assembly being connected to a second rotor. The gear assembly has a gear ratio adapted to rotate the second rotor faster than the first rotor. The second rotor is in magnetic communication with a stator which has an electrically conductive coil, the electrically conductive coil being in communication with a load.

System for steering a drill string

A system for transmitting power to components of a downhole drill string is disclosed in one embodiment of the invention as including a power source providing an alternating current at a first frequency. A rectifier is provided to convert the alternating current to direct current. An inverter converts the direct current to an alternating current at a second frequency, different from the first frequency, and more efficient for power transmission. An inductive coupler converts the alternating current at the second frequency to an alternating magnetic flux for transmission across a tool joint of a downhole drill string. The magnetic flux may be detected by another inductive coupler, magnetically coupled to the first inductive coupler, to convert the alternating magnetic flux back to an alternating current at the second frequency.

System and method for providing electrical power downhole

In one aspect of the present invention a downhole tool string has a rotor secured within a bore and connected to a jack element that is substantially coaxial with the rotor. A portion of the jack element extends out of an opening formed in a working face of a drill bit located at the bottom of the drill string. The jack element is adapted to rotate independent of the drill bit when the rotor and drill bit are in operation.

In one aspect of the present invention, an induction resistivity tool incorporated into a downhole tool string component comprises an annular radial recess disposed along an outside surface of a tubular wall of the downhole component. At least one electrically insulated induction coil is disposed in the radial recess and adapted to transceive induction signals outward from the tubular wall when carrying an electrical current. The at least one coil is tuned for an optimal signal frequency and an actuator in the downhole component is adapted to put an electrically conductive element into and out of electrical contact with the at least one coil and thereby change the optimal signal frequency.
