A gripping element includes a body extending lengthwise from a first end to a second end. The body includes a first wall, a second wall extending from the first wall, and a third wall extending between the first wall and the second wall. The first wall, the second wall, and the third wall collectively define a hollow interior of the body. The body also defines an opening at each of its first and second ends. The opening at each of the first and second ends is in communication with the hollow interior of the body to permit an elastomeric material to be received within the opening at the first end of the body, within the hollow interior of the body, and within the opening at the second end of the body.

Seismic conduit joint connector

A system includes a conduit and a gasket assembly. The conduit includes a body and has a bell defining an opening disposed at one end of the conduit. The bell includes a ridge defining a circumferential internal groove, a sloping portion defining an internal recessed area and disposed adjacent to the ridge, and an abutment end inwardly extending from the sloping portion in a direction that is perpendicular to a central axis defined by the bell. The gasket assembly is disposed within the internal groove. The gasket assembly includes a plurality of gripping inserts each comprising a hollow body and an elastomeric gasket having a circular shape and being disposed within the hollow bodies defines by the plurality of gripping inserts.

An apparatus for restraining plastic pipe against both internal and external forces at a pipe or fitting connection and to join and seal at least two pipes to form a pipeline is shown featuring an improved restraining and sealing mechanism. The restraining and sealing mechanism includes a circumferential housing and a companion sealing ring which are received within a mating groove provided in the belled end of a female pipe. The circumferential housing has an interior region which contains a gripping ring insert. The sealing ring and housing are integrally located within a belled pipe end during belling operations. Either the exterior of the gripping ring or the interior of the housing or both are provided with a low friction coating.

Seal and restraint system for plastic pipe with low friction coating

A combination sealing and restraint system for an as-cast ductile iron fitting is shown for both sealing and preventing separation of an iron pipe fitting and a mating male pipe. A ring-shaped body is installed within a mating groove provided in a mouth region of the as-cast fitting after the fitting has been cast at the manufacturing plant. The ring-shaped body is formed of an injection molded elastomeric material and carries a series of gripping segments which have teeth on an inner surface thereof which are designed to engage an outer surface of a mating male pipe. The teeth are oriented to allow movement of the male pipe in a first direction relative to an end opening of the fitting during assembly, but to resist movement in a opposite direction after the fitting joint has been assembled. The gripping segments have shelf regions which are mechanically secured to the elastomeric body of the gasket. The ring-shaped body also includes a relatively flexible portion formed of an elastomer which forms a lip seal region with the mating male pipe.

Self restrained ductile iron fitting

A combination sealing and restraint system for an as-cast ductile iron fitting is shown for both sealing and preventing separation of an iron pipe fitting and a mating male pipe. A ring-shaped body is installed within a mating groove provided in a mouth region of the as-cast fitting after the fitting has been cast at the manufacturing plant. The ring-shaped body carries a gripping member with teeth on an inner surface thereof which are initially angled away from an outer surface of a mating male pipe. The teeth are forced into engagement with the exterior surface of the mating male pipe as the pipe joint at the fitting is assembled. The teeth are oriented to allow movement of the male pipe in a first direction relative to an end opening of the fitting during assembly, but to resist movement in a opposite direction after the fitting joint has been assembled. The ring-shaped body also includes a relatively flexible portion formed of an elastomer which forms a sealing member with the mating male pipe.

A method and apparatus for restraining pipe against internal forces at a pipe or fitting connection and to join and seal at least two pipes to form a pipeline is shown featuring an improved restraining/sealing mechanism. The restraining/sealing mechanism includes a relatively rigid gripper ring and a companion sealing ring which are received within one or more mating grooves provided in the belled end of a female pipe. The gripper ring and sealing ring can be combined or attached, or they can be separate members located in the same retaining groove or separate grooves in the female belled pipe end.

Combination seal and restraint system for plastic pipe

A restraining gasket for both sealing and preventing separation of a pipe joint used to join a bell end of a female ductile iron pipe to the male end of a mating ductile iron pipe. The gasket has a body formed from a compressible elastomeric material having a hardened metal ring located therein with gripping teeth. The hardened ring has an opening at one point in its circumference which is filled with rubber. The rubber-filled gap ensures that the gasket body seals first prior to engagement of the gripping teeth as the pipe joint is assembled.

Restraining mechanical joint gasket for ductile iron pipe

A combination sealing and restraint system for an as-cast ductile iron fitting is shown for both sealing and preventing separation of an iron pipe fitting and a mating male pipe. The restraint system includes both a sealing ring and a combination gripping ring which are installed in a groove provided in a mouth region of the iron fitting. The gripping ring has teeth on an inner surface which are initially angled away from an outer surface of the male pipe. The teeth are forced into engagement with the exterior surface of the mating male pipe as the pipe joint at the fitting is assembled. The teeth are oriented to allow movement of the male pipe in a first direction relative to an end opening of the fitting during assembly, but to resist movement in a opposite direction after the fitting joint has been assembled. The sealing ring and gripping ring are installed in the annular groove of the as-cast iron fitting after the iron casting operation at the factory.

A sealing and restraining gasket for preventing separation of a pipe joint used to join a bell end of a female pipe to the male end of a mating pipe. The gasket is formed from a compressible body of elastomeric material and carries a rigid ring with gripping teeth for engaging an outer surface of the mating male pipe. The ring has a gap at one location. The gripping teeth of the rigid ring are oriented so as to be out of contact with and initially angled away from the outer surface of the male plastic pipe. The teeth are forced into engagement with the exterior surface of the male pipe as the pipe joint is assembled and the gap in the ring is partly closed. The teeth are oriented to allow movement of the male pipe in a first direction relative to the female bell end opening during assembly, but to resist movement in a opposite direction after the pipe joint has been assembled.

Pipe gasket

A restraining element for preventing separation of a pipe joint used to join a bell end of a female plastic pipe to the male end of a mating pipe. The restraining element is formed from a compressible body of elastomeric material, the compressible body having a segmented metal ring located therein with gripping teeth for engaging an outer surface of the mating male pipe. The ring segments making up the segmented metal ring are oriented such that the gripping teeth of the ring segments are out of contact with and initially angled away from the outer surface of the male plastic pipe. The teeth of the annular gasket are forced into engagement with the exterior surface of the male plastic pipe as the pipe joint is assembled. The teeth are oriented to allow movement of the male pipe in a first direction relative to the female bell end opening during assembly, but to resist movement in a opposite direction after the pipe joint has been assembled.
