There is described a fluid treatment system that is particularly well suited for treating ballast water on a shipping vessel. The present fluid treatment system is characterized by having two general modes of operation. A so-called ballasting mode and a so-called deballasting mode. In the ballasting mode, water is pumped from the sea or other body of water in which the shipping vessel is located to a ballast fluid inlet in the present fluid treatment system. Thereafter, it passes through the filter separation and radiation treatment sections in the fluid treatment zone of the fluid treatment system. Next, the fluid exits the fluid outlet of the fluid treatment system and it is pumped to one or more ballast tanks that are located on the shipping vessel. In the deballasting mode, water contained in the ballast tank(s) is pumped to a deballasting fluid inlet of the fluid treatment system after which it is treated in the radiation section only&#x2014;i.e., in the deballasting mode, water substantially bypasses the fluid separation section of the fluid treatment system. Next, the treated fluid exits the fluid outlet of the fluid treatment system and is discharged overboard the shipping vessel. A valve system is used to switch between ballasting mode and deballasting mode.

Fluid treatment system

A lamp device is disclosed. The lamp device comprises a first electrical connector and a second electrical connector located at a first end portion of the lamp device. The first end portion of the lamp device is received in a receptacle of a first base portion. A first locking portion is included for secunng the first base portion to the first end portion. The present radiation lamp device obviates or mitigates the need to use adhesive and/or polymer insulation/O-rings to achieve electrical connections. Further, the present radiation lamp may be oriented in a vertical orientation without the need to use springs and/or rubber part to support the distal end of the lamp.

Radiation lamp and radiation source module incorporating same

A fluid flow modifier device comprising: an inlet portion for receiving a flow of fluid; an outlet portion for outputting the flow of fluid; and a flow modifier portion disposed between the inlet portion and the outlet portion, the flow modifier portion comprising an outer portion comprising a closed cross-section to the flow of fluid and an inner porous portion configured such that at least a portion of the flow received in the inlet portion must pass through the inner porous portion to reach the fluid outlet. The fluid flow modifier device is ideally used to transition fluid flow between an fluid supply line and a fluid treatment zone&#x2014;for example, a pressure water supply line and an ultraviolet radiation treatment device (e.g., drinking water treatment device).

Fluid flow modifier and fluid treatment system incorporating same

There is disclosed a fluid filter device. The fluid filter device comprises: a primary filter section having a first porous section; and a secondary filter section having second porous section; wherein: (i) the primary filter section and the secondary filter section are in fluid communication with one another, and (ii) the first porous section has a greater porosity than the second porous section. There is also disclosed a fluid isolation device for isolation an exterior fluid from a surface of an enclosure containing interior fluid. The device comprises a sleeve element movable between: (i) a retracted portion in which exterior fluid contacts the surface of the enclosure, and (ii) an extended position in which exterior fluid is isolated from contacting the surface of the enclosure. A distal portion of the sleeve element is configured to actuate a backwash element configured to backwash the interior fluid from the enclosure when the sleeve element is in the extended position.

Fluid filter device

There is described a fluid treatment system comprising: (i) a fluid inlet; (ii) a fluid outlet; and (iii) a fluid treatment zone in fluid communication with the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet. The fluid treatment zone comprises a housing within which is disposed a fluid separation section (the separation section may include a single separation device or a combination of two or more similar or dissimilar separation devices) and a fluid radiation section in fluid communication with one another. The fluid separation section removes solids in the fluid and the fluid radiation section irradiates the fluid to deactive microorganisms in the fluid. The fluid separation section and the fluid radiation section are configured to have a substantially common fluid flow path which significantly reduces the space or footprint requirement of and/or significantly reduces hydraulic head loss (pressure drops) in the overall fluid treatment system while allowing the two sections to perform their respective functions.

A fluid treatment system having an inlet, an outlet, and a fluid treatment zone therebetween. The zone has an array of rows of radiation source assemblies. Each radiation source assembly has a longitudinal axis disposed at an oblique angle with respect to a direction of fluid flow. Each row has a plurality of radiation source assemblies in spaced relation in a direction transverse to the direction of fluid flow, to define a gap through which fluid may flow between an adjacent pair of assemblies. Preferably, all rows in the array are staggered with respect to one another in a direction orthogonal to the direction of fluid flow, such that the gap between an adjacent pair of radiation source assemblies in an upstream row of assemblies is partially or completely obstructed in the direction of fluid flow by a serially disposed radiation source assembly in at least one downstream row.

There is described a fluid treatment system in which fluid to be treated is impinged under pressure on a radiation emitting surface. The fluid treatment system includes at least one radiation source having a radiation emitting surface and at least one nozzle element having a fluid discharge opening spaced from the radiation emitting surface. The fluid discharge opening is configured to impinge fluid to be treated on to at least a portion of the radiation emitting surface. The fluid treatment system is well suited to treating low transmittance fluid.

A fluid treatment system having: an inlet; an outlet; and a fluid treatment zone disposed therebetween. The fluid treatment zone has: (i) an elongate first radiation source assembly having a first longitudinal axis, and (ii) an elongate second radiation source assembly having a second longitudinal axis. The first and second longitudinal axes are non-parallel to each other and to a direction of fluid flow through the treatment zone. The present fluid treatment system can treat large volumes of fluid (e.g., wastewater, drinking water or the like); it requires a relatively small 'footprint'; it results in a relatively lower coefficient of drag resulting in an improved hydraulic pressure loss/gradient over the length of the treatment system; and it results in relatively lower (or no) forced oscillation of the radiation sources thereby mitigating breakage of the radiation source and/or protective sleeve (if present).

The present invention relates to an ultraviolet radiation lamp. The lamp comprises: (i) a substantially sealed cavity comprising a mercury-containing material; and (ii) a heating unit disposed exteriorly with respect to the cavity. The heating unit is disposed in contact with a first portion of the cavity comprising the mercury-containing material. The heating unit has adjustable heat output.

Ultraviolet radiation lamp and source module and treatment system containing same

The invention relates to an ultraviolet radiation lamp. The lamp comprises a substantially sealed cavity comprising a mercury-containing material; a filament disposed in the sealed cavity; and an electrical control element in contact with the filament, the electrical control element configured to adjust or maintain a temperature of the mercury-containing material with respect to a prescribed temperature. Such a constructions allows the present ultraviolet radiation lamp to be operated at optimal efficiency without the need to use additional components to add heat to and/or remove heat from the mercury-containing material.

There is disclosed a lamp device including a longitudinal axis, a first elongate electrical connector and a second elongate electrical connector, each of the first elongate electrical connector and the second elongate connector being non-parallel with respect to the longitudinal axis. The present lamp device provides a reliable electric connection on the one hand, yet is relatively inexpensive, uncomplicated and simple to implement on the other hand.

The present invention relates to a fluid treatment system comprising: an inlet; an outlet; and a fluid treatment zone disposed between the inlet and the outlet. An optical radiation sensor system having: a housing having a distal portion for receiving radiation from the radiation source and a proximal portion; a sensor element in communication with the proximal portion, the sensor element configured to detect and respond to incident radiation received from the radiation source; and motive structure configured to move the housing with respect to the sensor element between at least a first position and a second position. A radiation pathway is defined between the radiation source and the sensor element when the housing is in at least one of the first position and the second position. Movement of the housing with respect to the sensor element causes a modification of intensity of radiation impinging on the sensor element.

Optical radiation sensor system

There is described a fluid treatment system which may which may be used with radiation sources that do not require a protective sleeve&#x2014;e.g., excimer radiation sources. An advantage of the present fluid system treatment is that the radiation sources may be removed from the fluid treatment zone without necessarily having to shut down the fluid treatment system, remove the fluid, break the seals which retain fluid tightness, replace/service radiation source and than reverse the steps. Instead, the present fluid treatment system allows for service/replacement of the radiation sources in the fluid treatment zone during operation of the fluid treatment system.

There is described an excimer radiation lamp assembly. The lamp assembly comprises: an elongate member having an annular cross-section to define an elongate passageway aligned with a longitudinal axis of the lamp assembly; an electrode element in electrical connection with at least a portion of the elongate passageway; and a cooling element disposed in the elongate passageway, the cooling element being electrically isolated with respect to the electrode element.
