The present invention provides aqueous flesh coating compositions comprising one or more aqueous acid-functional acrylic or vinyl copolymer and from 0.03 and up to 1.0 equivalent, based on equivalents of carboxylic acid in the polymer, of one or more active compound chosen from an aminoguanidine, semicarbazide, dihydrazide, guanamine, hydrazine and a salt thereof. Further, the invention provides methods of applying the coating composition to leather crust or to tanned leather, and to the flesh coated leather or coated leather crust produced thereby. The leather crust and tanned leather produced by the invention, for example fleshcoated or finished leather, will emit greatly reduced levels of aldehydes over time and especially valuable in scrubbing aldehydes from perforated leather for automotive use.

Aldehyde scrubbing in crust leather and tanned leather

The present invention provides methods for reducing the level of free aldehydes in coatings for flexible substrates, such as tanned leather, and substantially aldehyde free substrates. The methods comprise applying to the substrate a composition of one or more aqueous emulsion or suspension composition of an acrylic polymer or silicon containing polymer that is made from, or contains one or more lower alkyl alcohol or degrades on storage or in use to form such an alcohol, and one or more water-insoluble to slightly water soluble aldehyde scavenger compound, followed by drying or curing the applied composition to form a coating. In addition, the methods provide enhanced aldehyde scrubbing, especially for acetaldehyde, by applying to a substrate an aqueous acrylic polymer or silicon containing polymer emulsion or suspension comprising a aldehyde scavenger compound that is substantially deprotonated, i.e. by raising the pH composition to 5.5 or higher. The present invention also provides treated and coated substrates made by the inventive methods.

Aldehyde reduction in aqueous coating and leather finishing compositions

Thermosetting powder coating composition adapted to provide a uniform, fine textured finish onto heat sensitive substrates, without damaging the substrate while curing the coating. The composition comprises a glycidyl methacrylate resin, 1,3,5-tris-(2-carboxyethyl)isocyanurate, a catalyst and, optionally, a second curing agent selected from the group consisting of difunctional and trifunctional carboxylic acids. The composition according to the present invention provides a fine texture finish without the need to add texturizing agents. The composition may be cured at temperatures below 300&deg; F. so as to not damage the heat sensitive substrate.
