The present invention provides a dual mode mobile device that can use both cellular-based and IP-based applications with single application program interface and without having separate and distinct subsystems for each communications mode. The device may also include a power management module that considerably reduces the power consumption of the device by periodically entering a deep sleep mode for a predetermined sleep interval, changing power modes based on the status of one or more applications, automatically changing power modes based on incoming packets or a combination thereof. The device may also include a remote management module to diagnose, troubleshoot and solve problems involving one of the networks by using the device's ability to communicate using the other network. The dual mode capability of the mobile device allows a remote management server or operator to analyze, document and solve problems with the mobile device and/or its connections to a network.

Method, system and apparatus for a dual mode mobile device

A receiver for a wireless local area network, WLAN, having a low power listening mode of operation. The receiver includes two separate paths in the analog front end, AFE. One path includes a low resolution and low power analog to digital converter, ADC. The other path includes a high resolution and high power ADC. In listen mode, only the low resolution ADC is powered and provides inputs to a packet detector for identifying a barker code. When the correct barker code is received, the high resolution ADC is enabled and coupled to a receiver for receiving a payload in the data packet.

Receiver with low power listen mode in a wireless local area network

A system and method for generating a message integrity code, MIC, for a MAC protocol data unit in a wireless local area network, WLAN, operating according to the IEEE 802.11 standard. A MAC service data unit, MSDU, sequence control sequence number, SN, input to the MIC algorithm is suppressed, e.g. set to all zeros, when calculating the MIC. Only the fragment number, FN, portion of the sequence control is included in calculation of the MIC. The MIC may therefore be calculated before an actual SN has been determined. All MPDUs include sequential packet numbers, PNs. A station receiving MPDUs checks the PNs of MPDUs having the same SN, and rejects messages which do not have a proper sequential set of PNs.

Simplified CCMP mode for a wireless local area network

A wireless receiver is provided that includes a component and a power control logic. The component is operable to receive a wireless signal and process the wireless signal in at least one of a first mode and a second mode. The first mode uses less power than the second mode. The power control logicis operable based on a characteristic of the wireless signal to promote processing the wireless signal by the component in the at least one of the first and second modes. A method for a wireless receiver to process the wireless signal to reduce power consumption is also provided. The method includes determining a characteristic of the wireless signal, and selecting one of a first and second modes in which to process the signal based on the characteristic of the wireless signal.

A low power packet detector (LPPD) can significantly reduce the average power consumption of WLAN devices. The LPPD takes advantages of 802.11 protocols to turn on and off selected modules of an 802.11 receiver based on the packets on the medium and the decoding stages. The LPPD can be implemented mostly in firmware with minor hardware modifications to existing chips or be implemented in ASIC technology that takes full advantages of the power saving made possible by it.

On the transmit side, a device () includes a plurality of message sources (A,B,C) and a smart router () function executed by a processor () within the device. The smart router () function allocates each wireless transmission, or components of a multicomponent wireless transmission, over a licensed wireless link (LLTX) or an unlicensed wireless link (ULTX), by optimizing various factors. The allocation factors include the availability of the unlicensed and licensed channels within range of the transmitting device (); quality of service parameters such as time delay limits, jitter limits, bandwidth requirements, and the like; cost tolerance and cost per minute factors; power consumption expectations; and a combination of these and other factors. Transmission of the wireless message over the selected wireless links is then carried out. Wireless communications system using both licensed and unlicensed frequency bands

The present invention provides a system for providing simultaneous operation of disparate wireless telecommunication technologies within a single device (). The device comprises a plurality of antennas (). The system provides an antenna switching function () communicatively coupled to the plurality of antennas. A first wireless telecommunications function () is communicatively coupled to the antenna switching function, as is a second wireless telecommunications function (). The system provides an arbitration function () communicatively coupled to the antenna switching function and the first and second wireless telecommunications functions. A defined prioritization scheme is provided. In digital communications that utilize a data packet format wherein each data packet includes a physical layer (PHY) component and a media access control layer (MAC) component, the media access control layer component can be selectively protected by forward error correction (FEC). The receiving end receives an indication as to whether FEC has been applied, and makes an FEC decision based (12-15) on this indication. The accuracy of the received-side FEC decision and the robustness of the FEC indication can be improved by: making the FEC decision based on the results of FEC decoding applied to a media access control layer header within the media access control layer component; providing an FEC indication bit in the physical layer component; and using a plurality of bits to encode the FEC indication in either the physical layer component or the media access control layer component.

When wireless communications systems are operating in the same general area, collisions between their transmissions are bound to occur. The collisions reduce the performance in the networks. In some wireless communications systems that use a fixed or prespecified transmission frequency pattern, a look-ahead technique that investigates the quality of the communications channel at the upcoming transmission frequencies can be used to allow or disallow transmissions. Additionally, a maximum length of a transmission can be determined based on the quality of the transmission frequency. Finally, if the communications system is controlled by a centralized controller, moving the controller away from sources of interference will often improve performance.
