A method for identifying brain-state dependent functional areas of unitary pooled activity (FAUPAs) using a statistical model that does not require a priori knowledge of the activity-induced ideal response signal time course is provided. A system for identifying a functional network in a brain of a living object includes a FAUPA identifier configured to identify FAUPAs by analyzing a plurality of images of the brain over a predetermined period. The plurality of images include a plurality of voxels, and the FAUPA identifier analyzes each voxel of the plurality of voxels in relation to one or more surrounding voxels of each voxel until each voxel of the plurality of voxels is evaluated. A brain network identification module configured to construct the functional network based on the identified FAUPAs that are functionally connected. A display module configured to display images of the brain depicting the FAUPAs included in the functional network.

Method and system for determining brain-state dependent functional areas of unitary pooled activity and associated dynamic networks with functional magnetic resonance imaging

A visual neuromodulation system includes a processor and a transition function determination module configured to determine a spatial frequency transition function corresponding to a spatial frequency based on user input. The user input includes: (i) a quantity of illusions perceived in response to viewing a spatial frequency pattern associated with the spatial frequency and (ii) a level of discomfort sensed in response to viewing the spatial frequency pattern associated with the spatial frequency. The system also includes a threshold determination module configured to determine a threshold spatial frequency based on the spatial frequency transition function. The system includes, in response to the threshold determination module determining the threshold spatial frequency, a control module that selects a display spatial frequency pattern from a set of spatial frequency patterns. The selected spatial frequency pattern corresponds to a display spatial frequency greater than the threshold spatial frequency to display for a predetermined period.

Visual neuromodulation system and methods for treatments of visually triggered migraine headaches and seizures

Inhomogeneous tissue structures cause spatial-varying water molecule diffusion that is characterized by the spatial derivative of diffusivity, i.e., diffusion gradient. In a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, the effects of diffusion and diffusion gradient are simultaneously encoded in an echo signal using diffusion-encoding magnetic field gradient pulses. A method for imaging the diffusion gradient of water molecules in tissues and for delineating the interface between two tissues having different diffusion properties is disclosed. The method also describes imaging diffusion anisotropy and diffusion gradient simultaneously without any additional scans in comparison with diffusion tensor MRI.
