An apparatus for measuring mechanical properties of a rock formation. The apparatus includes force application fixtures configured to apply opposing compressive forces to a disc-shaped sample of a core plug specimen from the rock formation. Each of the force application fixtures include an applicant portion having an end cap. The end cap has a shaped surface that is configured to conform with a portion of a non-planar side of the disc-shaped sample such that substantially an entire volume of the disc-shaped sample experiences a compressive stress when the opposing compressive forces are applied to the portions of the non-planar side. A system and method for measuring mechanical properties of a rock formation are also disclosed.

Method, apparatus and system for estimation of rock mechanical properties

An apparatus for measuring mechanical properties of a downhole material, including first and second fixtures each of the fixtures containing a force application fixture to apply a stress to a specimen of the downhole material. A confining sleeve wraps around portions of the first and second fixtures to form a sealed specimen chamber defined by an inner surface of the confining sleeve and ends of the first and second fixtures nearest the specimen. Wall of a confining chamber contain the first and second fixtures, the confining sleeve and the specimen therein. The confining chamber holds a hydraulic fluid therein such that the hydraulic fluid can exert a confining pressure on the confining sleeve to maintain the seal of the specimen chamber and to maintain contact between the inner surface of the confining sleeve and the specimen when the stress is applied to the specimen. First channels pass though one or more of the walls of the confining chamber to add and remove the hydraulic fluid to and from the confining chamber. Second channels pass though one or more of the walls of the confining chamber and through one of the first and second fixtures to add and remove a pore space fluid to and from specimen chamber ports open to the specimen chamber to maintain a pore pressure at the specimen chamber ports that is equal to or less than the confining pressure while the stress is applied to the specimen. A system and method are also disclosed.

Apparatus, system and method for mechanical testing under confined conditions

A system comprising engine driven pumps, control units, a rate control algorithm, and a trained algorithmic model. The control units store operation variables for the engine driven pumps. The rate control algorithm includes an instruction set to read the operation variables for the engine driven pumps. The instruction set comprises a trained algorithmic model with a parameter space based on historical operation variables. The trained algorithmic model determines an optimal distribution rate based on an objective. The instruction set generates rate control variables based on the determined optimal distribution rate. Each rate control variable comprises a selected control unit identifier and a rate value. The instruction set distributes each rate control variable based on the selected control unit identifier. The trained algorithmic model determine the optimal distribution rate using an objective that defines a desired mixture between a first fuel and a second fuel.

A method and system for modeling a fracture geometry. The method may comprise taking one or more pressure measurements from an offset wellbore, identifying a pressure trend of the offset wellbore, and comparing the one or more pressure measurements to the pressure trend to identify a poro-elastic trend. The method may further comprise creating a poro-elastic model of a target wellbore from the poro-elastic trend, identifying the fracture geometry of a fracture in the target wellbore from at least the poro-elastic trend, and comparing the fracture geometry to a target fracture geometry. The system may comprise a pressure measurement device disposed in an offset wellbore, one or more pieces of equipment configured for a fracture operation and connected to a target wellbore, and an information handling system.

Real time estimation of fracture geometry from the poro-elastic response measurements

An illustrative hydraulic fracture mapping method includes: collecting microseismic signals during a multistage hydraulic fracturing operation; deriving microseismic event locations from the microseismic signals to create a microseismic event map for each stage of the operation; fitting a set of fracture planes to the microseismic event maps; determining a stimulated reservoir volume ('SRV') region for each said stage; identifying where SRV regions overlap to form an overlap region; partitioning the overlap region to eliminate any overlap between the SRV regions; truncating the set of fracture planes for the SRV regions to discard any portion outside the revised SRV regions; and storing or displaying the truncated set of fracture planes for the first revised SRV region.

Stimulated fracture network partitioning from microseismicity analysis

In some aspects, a number of subsystem models is accessed by a computer system. Each subsystem model represents dynamic attributes of a distinct physical subsystem in a subterranean region. At least one of the number of subsystem models represents dynamic attributes of a mechanical subsystem in the subterranean region. A discrete fracture network (DFN) model representing a fracture network in the subterranean region is accessed at the computer system. The DFN model includes junction models. Each junction model represents interactions between a respective set of subsystem models associated with the junction model. Junction variables of the junction model can be defined based on dynamic attributes of the respective set of subsystem models associated with the junction model. A stimulation treatment for the subterranean region can be simulated by operating the DFN model including the junction variables.

Geomechanical and geophysical computational model for oil and gas stimulation and production

Techniques for evaluating a fluid flow through a wellbore include identifying an input characterizing a fluid flow through a wellbore; identifying an input characterizing a geometry of the wellbore; generating a model of the wellbore based on the inputs characterizing the fluid flow and the geometry of the wellbore; simulating the fluid flow through the wellbore based on evaluating the model with a numerical method that determines fluid flow conditions at a first boundary location uphole and adjacent to a perforation of a plurality of perforations in the wellbore and at a second boundary location downhole and adjacent to the perforation; and preparing, based on the fluid flow conditions determined with the numerical method, an output associated with the simulated fluid flow through the wellbore for display to a user.

Evaluating fluid flow in a wellbore

Systems, methods, and software can be used to simulate a fracture treatment. In some aspects, physically separate rock blocks of a subterranean zone are modeled by separate block models. The block model for each physically separate rock block represents intra-block mechanics of the rock block, for example, as a group of discrete block elements. Interactions between adjacent pairs of the rock blocks are modeled by separate joint models. The joint model for each adjacent pair of rock blocks represents inter-block mechanics between the adjacent rock blocks, for example, as pre-defined joints. The block models and joint models are used to simulate an injection treatment of the subterranean zone.

Modeling subterranean rock blocks in an injection treatment simulation

An injection treatment on a subterranean zone is simulated by modeling physically separate rock blocks of the subterranean zone by separate block models. The block model for each physically separate rock block represents intra-block mechanics of the rock block by finite element method. Condensation is performed in the finite element method to reduce nodal degrees of freedom operation on by the finite element method. Interactions between adjacent pairs of the rock blocks are modeled by separate joint models. The joint model for each adjacent pair of rock blocks represents inter-block mechanics between the adjacent rock blocks. The injection treatment of the subterranean zone is simulated with the block models and the joint models.
