A multiple mode hybrid heat exchanger apparatus is disclosed. The heat exchange apparatus includes a frame assembly having a first end wall, a second end wall, a first side wall, a second side wall, an indirect heat exchange section, a spray system, an intermediate distribution basin, and a direct heat exchange section. A vertical passage is defined by the frame assembly and the direct heat exchange section. A lower air inlet is defined by a plurality of openings in the direct heat exchange section, and the lower air inlet is configured to provide an inlet for air into the vertical passage. The apparatus further includes a cold water collection basin and a fan to induce an airflow through the lower air inlet. The multiple mode hybrid heat exchanger apparatus is selectably configured to operate in an evaporative mode, a dry mode, and an adiabatic mode.

Drift eliminator

A drift eliminator to remove liquid from a flow of air in a cooling tower includes an eliminator inlet, a plurality of flutes, an eliminator ridge, and a plurality of ribs. The eliminator inlet is to receive the flow of air. The plurality of flutes are configured to convey the flow of air through the drift eliminator. The eliminator ridge has a first drift wall extending in a first direction and a second drift wall extending in a second direction. Each flute is in fluid communication with the eliminator ridge and is defined by a flute interior surface curving upwards from the flute inlet to a flute outlet. The plurality of ribs are defined by adjacent ones of the flutes and curving upwards toward the flute outlet.

Cooling tower drift eliminator

A sheet for use in a heat exchange apparatus. The sheet includes a first vertical rib that extends generally parallel to the vertical axis of the heat exchange apparatus. The sheet also includes a second vertical rib that extends, substantially all the way between the first and second edges of the sheet generally parallel to the first vertical rib. The sheet further includes a first horizontal rib that extends substantially all the way between the third and fourth edges of the sheet. The sheet additionally includes a second horizontal rib that extends substantially all the way between the third and fourth edges of the sheet generally parallel to the first horizontal rib.

Air-to-air atmospheric exchanger

A sheet for use in a heat exchange apparatus. The sheet includes a first vertical rib that extends in a first direction and protrudes in a second direction out of the plane. The sheet also includes a second vertical rib that extends in the first direction along the sheet, between the first and second edges of the sheet. The second vertical rib also protrudes in the second direction out of the plane. The sheet further includes a first horizontal rib that extends in a third direction along the sheet between the third and fourth edges of the sheet, and protrudes in a fourth direction opposite said second direction. The sheet additionally includes a second horizontal rib that extends in the third direction along the sheet between the third and fourth edges of the sheet. The second horizontal rib protrudes in a fourth direction and intersects said second vertical rib.

A system for generating power from a low grade heat source includes a heat source inlet, heat sink inlet, heat exchanger unit, and a heat engine. The heat source inlet conveys a flow of a heated fluid into the system. The heat sink inlet conveys a flow of a cooled fluid into the system. The heat exchanger unit is configured to rotate. A portion of the heat exchanger unit alternates between thermal contact with the heated fluid and thermal contact with the cooled fluid in response to being rotated. The heat engine is configured to generate power in response to the heat exchanger unit being rotated.

Rotary heat exchanger

A heat exchange tower has an external structure including opposed sidewalls, a front barrier wall, an inlet opening below the front wall, and a rear barrier wall having an outlet at a generally upper region. A fill material generally spans the inside within the four walls, and is generally disposed above the top of the inlet and below the bottom of the outlet. A baffle protrudes inwardly from the rear barrier wall inside the tower and is located at a height above the top of the fill and below the bottom of the air outlet. A primary drift eliminator structure spans generally across the tower, and is located at the height of the baffle, so they connect to each other. A supplemental drift eliminator is provided above the primary drift eliminator, adjacent an inward edge of the baffle. At least one air turning vane angled in a generally vertical direction is provided below the fill media. An air inlet guide projects outwardly from the front wall above the inlet.

Heat exchange tower airflow apparatus and method

A heating tower apparatus for heating a liquid having an air flow inlet stream and a first air flow outlet and a second air flow outlet. The first air flow outlet provides a first outlet air flow stream and has a first outlet door that moves between an open position and a closed position. The second air flow outlet provides a second outlet air flow stream and has a second outlet door that moves between an open position and a closed position. The heating tower also includes a heat exchange portion having coils through which liquid to be heated flows. The heating tower is operable in a first configuration wherein the first outlet door is in the open position while the second outlet door is in the closed position. The heating is also operable in a second configuration wherein the second outlet door is in the open position while the first outlet door is in the closed position.

Heating tower apparatus and method with wind direction adaptation

A heating tower apparatus for heating a liquid. The heating tower includes a frame assembly, liquid distribution assembly and a fill medium. The heating tower additionally includes a hood that extends from the frame assembly. A shroud is disposed within the hood and the hood provides an air flow outlet. The heating tower further includes a track connected to the frame assembly along with a first door connected to the track and a second door connected to the track. The first door moves along the track between the hood and a first air flow inlet while the second door moves along the track between the hood and a second air flow outlet. The heating tower also includes first and second winches that operate to move the first and second doors along the track.

The sheet includes a first vertical rib that extends in a first direction generally parallel to the vertical axis of the heat exchange apparatus, wherein said first vertical rib protrudes in a second direction out of the plane. The sheet also includes a second vertical rib that extends in the first direction along the sheet, substantially all the way between the first and second edges of the sheet generally parallel to the first vertical rib. The second vertical rib also protrudes in the second direction out of the plane. The sheet further includes a first horizontal rib that extends in a third direction along the sheet substantially all the way between the third and fourth edges of the sheet, wherein the first horizontal rib protrudes in a fourth direction opposite said second direction. The sheet additionally includes a second horizontal rib that extends in the third direction along the sheet substantially all the way between the third and fourth edges of the sheet generally parallel to the first horizontal rib. The second horizontal rib protrudes in a fourth direction opposite the second direction, into the plane and intersects said second vertical rib.

Air-to-air atmospheric heat exchanger for condensing cooling tower effluent

A method for heating a fluid using a heating tower. The method includes the steps of drawing an air stream into the heating tower through an inlet and passing the air stream over a series of coils. The method for heating a fluid also includes discharging the air stream from the heating tower through an outlet and isolating the inlet air stream from the outlet air stream.

Heating tower apparatus and method with isolation of outlet and inlet air

A power generating system having a liquid natural gas (LNG) vaporization circuit and an energy generating circuit. The LNG vaporization circuit includes a heat exchange assembly and a heating tower connected to the heat exchange assembly. The LNG vaporization circuit also includes a LNG vessel connected to the heat exchange assembly. The energy generating circuit includes a gas turbine connected to the heating tower along with a first electrical generator connect to the gas turbine.

Power generating system and method

A method for heating a fluid using a heating tower. The method includes the steps of drawing an air stream into the heating tower through an inlet and passing the air stream over a fill medium. The method for heating a fluid also includes passing a fluid over the fill medium along with discharging the air stream from the heating tower through an outlet. The method further includes isolating the inlet air stream from the outlet air stream.

A heating tower apparatus for heating a liquid having more than one inlet and more than one outlet. Each of the more than one inlet and more than one outlet is selectively openable and closable. The heating tower apparatus also includes a liquid distribution assembly and a fill medium. The liquid distribution assembly distributes the liquid onto the fill medium.
