An appliance for heating fluid includes a reservoir for holding the fluid during use. One or more ceramic heaters mount with the reservoir to heat the fluid. The heater includes electrically resistive traces thick-film printed on a substrate. The heaters optionally mount with a heat transfer element having a relatively large surface area. The heat transfer element typifies a conductive element, such as an aluminum plate of forged aluminum. The plate has cavities to retain the heaters or sections fitted about heaters. Holes through a thickness of the plate induce turbulent fluid flow as the fluid freely passes there through during use. Heater control and mounting are still other aspects of the technology.

Ceramic heater for heating water in an appliance

A fusing apparatus includes a substrate having a first surface and a second surface, the second surface being opposite the first surface on the substrate, a first resistive trace and a second resistive trace, the first and second resistive traces being disposed adjacent each other along the first surface of the substrate in a length-wise direction thereof. A resistance of the first resistive trace is less than a resistance of the second resistive trace. The fusing apparatus further includes a plurality of thermistors disposed along the second surface of the substrate, including a first thermistor disposed on the second surface of the substrate opposite the first resistive trace in a central location along the length of the first resistive trace, a second thermistor disposed on the second surface of the substrate opposite the second resistive trace in a central location along the length of the second resistive trace, and a third thermistor disposed on the second surface of the substrate opposite a first area of the second surface, the third thermistor being closer to a first length-wise end of the substrate than the second resistive trace and a first length-wise end of the first resistive trace being closer to the first length-wise end of the substrate than the third thermistor.

Heater member for the fuser assembly of an electrophotographic imaging device

An imaging device includes a fuser having a heater connected to a power source via a switch. A controller generates a heater control signal for driving the heater without synchronizing the generation of the heater control signal with zero crossings of an AC voltage of the power source. The heater control signal changes between a first state indicating for the heater to be turned on and a second state indicating for the heater to be turned off. A trigger circuit receives the heater control signal and detects whether the AC voltage is within a predefined voltage span around zero volts. The trigger circuit generates a trigger signal for the switch when the AC voltage is within the predefined voltage span while the heater control signal is in the first state such that the switch causes current to pass through from the power source to the heater.

Power control for a fuser of an imaging device

A fuser assembly includes a heated member and a backup member defining a fusing nip. Toner fuses to media in the nip at a fusing temperature and process speed during an imaging operation. Upon receipt of a command to commence imaging, a controller operates a heater to heat the fuser assembly to a first temperature less than the fusing temperature and operates a motor to rotate the fuser assembly at a speed lower than the process speed to prevent overheating the heated and backup members. Before a first media reaches the fusing nip, a speed of the motor is increased to the process speed to properly advance the media through the nip at the process speed. Upon the first media arriving at the fusing nip, the controller increases the temperature of the heater to a second temperature greater than the first temperature to prevent cold offset.

Fuser temperature control in an imaging device

An imaging device includes a controller and fuser assembly. The fuser assembly has a heat transfer and backup member defining a nip and process direction of media travel. The heat transfer member includes a resistive trace with a length twice extending transverse to the process direction. The controller selectively applies AC power to the resistive trace. The controller calculates a power level from zero power to full power to heat the trace to a predetermined set-point temperature from a measured current temperature. The controller maps the calculated power level to one of only eight actual heating power levels that become applied or not to the resistive trace to achieve a desired power flicker and harmonics response otherwise unattainable by merely applying the calculated power level. The actual heating power levels include differing numbers of consecutive half-cycles of AC power and are applied at zero-crossings thereof.

Thermal control of fuser assembly in an imaging device

An apparatus includes a fuser assembly including a heater member. The heater member includes at least one heating element and at least one temperature sensor to sense a temperature of the heating element. A first power control unit is coupled to the at least one temperature sensor and operative to calculate at least one power level for the at least one heating element based upon at least one set-point temperature therefor and the temperature sensed by the at least one temperature sensor. A second power control unit is coupled to the first power control unit, receives the calculated at least one power level and selects, based upon the calculated power level, at least one actual power level from a stored plurality of predetermined power levels. The second power control unit controls a power for the at least one heating element based upon the selected at least one actual power level.

System and method for controlling a fuser assembly of an electrophotographic imaging device

A system and method for controlling the fuser assembly of an electrophotographic imaging device, including determining a resistance of the fuser heater at a predetermined temperature that is less than a fusing temperature for performing a fusing operation; calculating a set point heater resistance based on the determined heater resistance, the set point heater resistance being a resistance of the fuser heater at a predetermined set point temperature; reading a line voltage to the electrophotographic imaging device at a first time; calculating heater power based on the line voltage reading and the calculated set point heater resistance; and controlling a speed of a fusing operation based on the calculated heater power.

Power management and control for a fuser of an electrophotographic imaging device

A system and methods for controlling the fuser heater of an electrophotographic imaging device, including initiating a preheating operation for preheating the fuser heater. Following a temperature of the fuser heater reaching a first predetermined temperature during the preheating operation, heater power is calculated based on a current temperature of the fuser heater and upon a second predetermined temperature. Current line voltage of a power supply line powering the electrophotographic device is also calculated, and a maximum heater power is determined based on the calculated current line voltage. The calculated heater power is then compared with the determined maximum heater power and the fuser heater is powered using the heater power equal to a lesser of the calculated heater power and the determined maximum heater power to heat the fuser heater from the first predetermined temperature to a second predetermined temperature.

Method and system for controlling a fuser of an electrophotographic imaging device

An apparatus includes a fuser assembly including a heat transfer member. The heat transfer member includes a substrate, first and second resistive traces disposed on the substrate, and a temperature sensor disposed on the substrate for sensing an end portion thereof. A controller is coupled to the fuser assembly and is operative to control a fusing temperature of the heat transfer member during a fusing operation when a temperature sensed by the temperature sensor falls outside a predetermined range by gradually changing a set-point temperature for at least one of the first and second resistive traces from an initial set-point temperature to an adjusted set-point temperature such that an amount of heat generated by the at least one of the first and second resistive traces is adjusted without changing a fusing speed of the fuser assembly.

A method and apparatus for providing a relatively short period of time for a fuser assembly to be ready to perform a fusing operation. Included is a fusing assembly having a heat transfer member and a backup member positioned to engage the heat transfer member so as to define a fusing nip therewith; and a controller coupled to the fuser assembly, wherein during a period of time when the fuser assembly is not performing a fusing operation, the controller activates the heat transfer member while causing the backup member to rotate at one or more relatively slow speeds relative to a fusing speed of the fuser assembly.
