The present invention is a hydraulic control apparatus that activates and deactivates a downhole tool, such as a reamer, at a desired downhole location in a borehole. The apparatus includes a piston, a housing, a coil spring, and a guide pin. The piston has a cam portion with a continuous slotted groove. There is a slide member and a force member within the slotted groove so that the piston moves longitudinally and rotationally within the housing according to the guide pin within the slotted groove. At the desired downhole location, drilling fluid pressure passes a pressure threshold to move a front outlet of the piston to an opened position past an end of the housing, while rotating the piston according to the slide member and force member in the slotted groove. The apparatus alternately extends and retracts the reamer by opening and closing the front outlet by hydraulic control.

Hydraulic control apparatus and method for a downhole tool

A drill bit for cutting formation comprises a bit body, a plurality of cutters, and a plurality of blades with pockets to accommodate the cutters, respectively. In an embodiment, the plurality of cutters comprise a substrate, an ultra-hard layer, a concave surface on the top of the ultra-hard layer, wherein the concave surface comprises a plurality of planar and curved surfaces.

The force modulation system for a drill bit includes a cutter, a blade cap, a cap retention device, and a first force member. The cutter or cutters fit in the blade cap, and the blade cap fits to the drill bit. The cap retention device exerts a cap retention force in a first direction. The first force member exerts a first force in a second direction. The cutting profile of the force modulation system is now variable in more than one direction so as to avoid excessive forces from more than one direction for each cutter on the blade cap. There can also be a second force member to exert a second force in the first direction for more variability of the cutting profile in the first direction and a third force member to exert a third force in an opposite second direction.

The force modulation system for a drill bit includes a cutter, a holder, a holder retention device, and a first force member. The cutter fits in the holder, and the holder fits in the drill bit. The holder retention device exerts a holder retention force in a first direction. The first force member exerts a first force in a second direction. The second direction is angled offset to the first direction so as that the cutting profile of the force modulation system is now variable in the second direction, according to the first force. There can also be a second force member to exert a second force in the first direction for more variability of the cutting profile in the first direction. The second force member can be made integral with the first force member.

A drill bit for cutting formation comprises a bit body, a plurality of cutters, a plurality of blades with pockets to accommodate the cutters respectively. Each of the plurality of cutters has an ultra-hard layer, two side facets extending obliquely inward from the substrate to a top surface of the ultra-hard layer, a convex portion between the two side facets. The convex portion comprises a transition surface and the transitional surface is convex as it extends between adjacent the two side facets. The curvature of the transitional surface varies along the cutter axis with the curvature at the cutting edge larger than the curvature of the cutter circumferential surface.

A cutting element comprises a cylindrical substrate, a table bonded to the substrate, a working surface on the top of the table, and a plurality of dimples on the working surface. The table is made of super-abrasive material. The super-abrasive material can be PCD. Surface patterns of the table can reduce contact friction between the rock and the cutting element. Therefore, heat on the table can be reduced and thermal damage to the table is decreased. This results in improved cutting element service life.

A cutting element comprising a cylindrical substrate; a table bonded to the cylindrical substrate; at least one tooth with a reduced projected cutting area on a periphery of the table; and a plurality of undulating cutting ridges on a top of the table. The table can have a working surface and at least one lateral surface, and a chamfer formed therebetween. The working surface can be a non-planar working surface. For a given weight on the bit, the cutter will sink into the rock deeper which can lead to better stability and more effective rock removal.

Methods for designing fixed cutter bits and bits made using such methods

A cutting element has a sleeve with a first inner diameter and a second inner diameter, where the second inner diameter is larger than the first inner diameter and located at a lower axial position than the first inner diameter. A rotatable cutting element having an axis of rotation extending therethrough is at least partially disposed within the sleeve. The rotatable cutting element has a cutting face and a body extending axially downward from the cutting face, at least one hole extending from an outer surface of the body toward the axis of rotation, and a locking device disposed in each hole. The locking device protrudes from the hole to contact the second inner diameter of the sleeve, thereby retaining the rotatable cutting element within the sleeve.

Methods of attaching rolling cutters in fixed cutter bits using sleeve, compression spring, and/or pin(s)/ball(s)

A cutting element for a drill bit that includes an outer support element having at least a bottom portion and a side portion; and an inner rotatable cutting element, a portion of which is disposed in the outer support element, wherein the inner rotatable cutting element includes a substrate and a diamond cutting face having a thickness of at least 0.050 inches disposed on an upper surface of the substrate; and wherein a distance from an upper surface of the diamond cutting face to a bearing surface between the inner rotatable cutting element and the outer support element ranges from 0 to about 0.300 inches is disclosed.
